You girls need to keep up. Yes..she has a home in LA but she built her family a HUGE gated estate in Kentwood..it has around 15,000 sq. feet I think. Brit spends alot of time there and that's where her SIXTEEN year old sister Jamie is living, pregnant and unwed. It seems that's where her boyfriend is from as well. The Spears sound like a really tacky family.(n)(n)(n)

I'm not referring to one person, but a whole family in general. The more money she made, the worse off the family situation became. All the late-night comics just bar-b-qued the mom, Lynn, because she was writing a book on parenting when the little one turned up pregnant. Obviously...the book was put on hold. I actually know someone very well that is from the same little town..they lived there at the same time. All fingers seem to point to the mom and dad..no one there was a bit surprised at how things have turned out.:blink: Plus...we know Elvis was a gentleman where the girls were concerned.

I don't worry about Jamie's baby because she and the dad are not married. I worry about the baby because the mom is 16 and doesn't appear to have a whole lot of maturity about her.

Yes....I think Jen got my point. It's her family that did not help things..at all. No..they were not "stage parents" as we tend to think of them. They were very self-involved with their own...activities, and sometimes "parenting" lagged waaayyy behind.;);)

The Britney from that era was real sexy and nice.... the current Britney (let's call it that way) is sad to see. I can see a resemblence between her downfall and the one from Elvis in the second half of the 70s. Only the mediaexposure now is even more (due to all the mobile and compact camera's: everyone can shoot ánd post pictures).

The big difference between Elvis and Brittany is that Elvis didn't usually make a public spectacle of himself. I think he had two bad concerts in his lifetime where his drug intake was noticeable? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey Diane
Unfortunatley Elvis's drug intake was noticeable at dozens upon dozens of concerts. From 1973 until the end the problems were materializing at his live shows. It was up and down in 73 and 74.Overall 75 was decent with many good shows. The wheels came off in 76.With few exceptions it was a disaster. The summer tours were horrible. He didnt fare much better in 77.Some shows better than others.Elvis was truly having a hard trime functioning at many times.Often his speaking voice was so slurred you couldnt even understand him.

Exactly...Elvis had his share of bad shows, and yes many times as Jak said it was VERY obvious that he was HIGHLY medicated.
More than two shows i'm affraid. Here's a few from the top of my head.
June 6th 1976 Atlanta
August 28th 1976 the Infamous show from Houston
September 27th-28th College Park
June 19th 1977 Omaha
October 5th 1974 Afternoon show In Indianapolis
These were all very below Elvis' standards...

You can add many more to the list. The infamous Baltimore show where he had to leave and then comeback is another. The last Vegas season started out very rough. It's not just a show here or there. The drug use adversley affected his performance level from 73 on.It's not a short list. The drugs robbed him of the ability he was accustomed to just a short time prior.

And yet theres the story for on June 28, 1973 Elvis almost overdosed in St. Louis Mo. He appeared that night at Kiel Auditorium (I had wanted to go but could not get tickets) but Elvis researcher and author Joe Tunzi was at that performance and he said Elvis was up and it was the best performance vocally of any he ever saw Elvis give. Tunzi saw Elvis many times. So Elvis must have had some of the most amazing recuperative powers of anyone who ever performed if the story is completely true. Tunzi says there is a soundboard of the 6-28-73 St. Louis show and I sure wish they would release it-just to see what kind of shape he was in-since it is reported he almost overdosed.

The crazy thing is that those tour shows from the spring and summer months of 1973 were outstanding. Atlanta, Nashville, etc...I looked and theres not even an audience recording out there of the St. louis concert..another one I hope comes up some day. I will say I find many shows from this time period among Elvis' best vocally. jmo.

It's funny 1973-74 had its ups and downs but for the most part 1975 was pretty **** good all the way through. Even the last Vegas engagement during the month of December of that year showed us Elvis giving great performances!! But when '76 rolled round, the wheels were coming off faster than ever.

Jak is correct. It is the August 28, 1976 show in Houston, TX where he apparently and literally didn't wake up until halfway through the show. After this, they no longer booked him to play matinee (afternoon) shows.

I've read this in several places about the overdose in St. Louis. But he was still able to perform. I wonder if the overdose didn't come after the show b/c after St. Louis, he went to Atlanta, Georgia, but with a day or 2 between the shows. That particular summer of 73 was apparently a rough one for Elvis because of the noticible increase in drugs.

Ehh....basically his vocals (on some songs) are just too 'nasally" sounding ("Something", for example). I love his versions of "Trilogy" and "What Now, My Love" from Aloha, though. The main 'weak point' for me is that he was just too 'stiff' during the show and didn't move around enough.....of course, there are varying opinons on why this was...mainly due to wanting to do the best show and/or nervousness.

I know that he was reportedly not on drugs for the shows in Hawaii (and I believe that he did clean himself up for those shows), he just didn't have the energy that he had in his prior concerts - almost a sedated performance (for lack of a better phrase) - but a drug induced sedation, just lacking the energy normally seen in his performances.

Alot of the shows from 73 on were not nearly as physical as they had been in years prior. In 72 there was still ALOT of movement and karate...not near as much in the years that followed.

You know, Tony is probaby correct in that he was very nervous and keyed up to do a flawless show. To me, the best part of the show was when he sang "I Can't Stop Loving You" and those few songs, which were incidently added in at the last minute to make up some time factor. Those songs don't look 'staged', he seems looser, and more confortable. Overall though, he was not very energetic.

Can't see how the setlist is weak with stuff from What Now My Love, It's Over, I'll Remember You, Burning Love, etc etc I thought it was pretty varied. The thing is by Aloha the shows were alot more polished, in 69 the group was new, his voice had that raw sound, which was great, but imo, not as rich and powerful as it became by the time for aloha. But I think there are shows after aloha that are better, Memphis 74, Pittsburg, Burmingham 76 etc..

that's a real cool Steamroller - mucfh better visually and vocally than Aloha
Can't see how the setlist is weak with stuff from What Now My Love, It's Over, I'll Remember You, Burning Love, etc etc I thought it was pretty varied. The thing is by Aloha the shows were alot more polished, in 69 the group was new, his voice had that raw sound, which was great, but imo, not as rich and powerful as it became by the time for aloha. But I think there are shows after aloha that are better, Memphis 74, Pittsburg, Burmingham 76 etc..
What you have in Aloha is a Vegas lounge act. That's what I dont like. His setlist is to mainstream and safe for my taste. His regular setlist was far superior.I didnt want Elvis to turn into a Vegas lounge act.He should have rocked the house. The show was very tame.

I see your points now Jak. If you want to see Elvis still raw and rocking then just go and watch or listen to the 12-31-1976 New Years Eve concert baby that show brought the house down. Best show he EVER done IMO.(y)

In my opinion Elvis had far superior shows compared to Aloha. The 69 shows were of a higher quality. So were the 70 shows IMO.I think the MSG shows are better also.Elvis was performing at an incredible level from 69-72.He looks great in Aloha for sure.I just think the setlist is weak and I think vocally he was better the previous few years.
I agree with you Jak, especially about the song list. You mention the level of the shows from 69 to 72, that's the point I was making earlier. I saw several shows a year, every year, and they became less and less physical as time went on. There is a YT video posted earlier about Steamroller Blues in 74. I don't see any sensational movement in the video...just Elvis kind of dancing around to the slow rhythmic beat. Go back to 1970..take a look at Patch It Up or Suspicious Minds. Now that's physical.;);)(y) It was always a discussion on the way home from seeing him, Vegas or concert show, that he was less and less physical every time.
As for a set-list...I love the one from 08/06/1973

Agreed...yes, he should have brought the house down. I wonder why the decision was made to keep it so middle-of-the-road.:hmm: I'm sure people will think I'm nuts, but, songs such as I'll Remember You and It's Over were far from my favorites.:blink:

Ahh what a great import we have here from Madison didn't they do a superb job on upgrading the sound from the previous release of the show The Power Of Zazham released on the Captain Marvel JR Records.
Think that is going to be my next show to listen too. Right now got Tenessee Starlight from Febuary 19th 1977 playing through the headphones, man one of the best ever versions of My Way I've heard!:notworthy

I was 11 Rossie, and my papa had just passed on and left my grandma living alone. So every day when i wasn't at school i would stay with her and keep her company like during summer breaks and on the weekends. One day we were talking about her life and my papa's and she told me how he was in memphis around the time elvis died and she had this really old newspaper the Commercail appeal one that reads in big letters Death Captures Crown Of Rock N Roll. i got to looking at it and it had some nice photos of elvis from july 5th 1976 in memphis his last concert there and i thought it was unreal how he changed so much. Then she told me she had this tape my papa had taped back in 2000 on tcm titled elvis that's the way it is special edition. I liked it alot, then i went home and my mom had these two really old rca cd's titled elvis presley the top ten hits and i remember everyday after school i would come home lay down and listen to those cds over and over. i remember really getting bummed out because on the last track which was burning love the cd started skipping and i heard the first about 10 seconds of it and it would stop. And after that I recall buying my first cds at walmart As Recorded at MSG and Aloha from Hawaii and one called Burning Love with the red disc. the stuff on there got me hooked for life and ever since then ive been a fan. I went through about a year or so kind of not doing anything containing elvis like bieng on forums collecting, etc but now im back harder than ever and its here to stay!

Since you suggested it, thats the concert I played for tonight..must say it is a pretty darn good show. After the band intro's like i said before he seemed more focused and not messing around. Love Jame's guitar sound on Proud Mary during the intro to the song. Bad to the bone!
