I'm right there with you on this one. I think his "huskier" sound is the best for this song, and when he gets wailing on this version, its awesome (can I still say awesome?? How about RAD???)

The first time that I saw Elvis live was Las Vegas, August 1971 and his intro song was "That's All Right Mama". The 2nd time I saw him was in Dallas, November of 1971 and he was still using "That's All Right Mama". He didn't switch to "See See Rider" until 1972.

Hi Joe, you are right, he did sing it in 1970, but not as an intro song. Though it was the first song on the On Stage album, it was in actuality about halfway through the shows setlist. Just imagine, E sang it in '70 without the guitar or mic stand. Sad theres no footage of it....

Huh????:blink: The version from 4/9/72 kicks ***, IMO. The band is on fire during that performance!

The "Aloha" versions are nowhere near the magnitude of the April, 1972 versions....not in the least.

I'm curious as to what the description of this song is because the dialog that is spoken is from the 1969 album Elvis Live At the International Hotel. This is what Elvis is saying right before he leads into "Tiger Man-Mystery Train" medley.:doh::doh::hmm:
The version on "On Stage" is my favorite version. This version is not "power driven" like the See See Rider which opened shows later. The vocal is more intact and full sounding.

Rosanne, I actually have 2 CD's that have the same recording from Feb. 18, 1970. The first one is http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/416FC79C1KL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Actually, I was reading in Peter's book last night where he mentions that when RCA was recording On Stage (See See Rider is the first song on this CD), which was from week #3 of the Winter engagement,1970, they used a few numbers from the Aug. 1969 engagement b/c they didn't have enough material for a complete album.

I never said that it was Elvis Live At the International Hotel. Rosanne said that the dialogue was from that album. As far as the song on the video, it sounds like the version I have on the 2 Cd's that I listed below.
I think what brought this all about was whether or not Elvis sang See See Rider on stage before 1971-72. The answer is yes, he did, but I do not know if he opened his show with the song or not. But he did, without a doubt, sing this song during his Feb. 1970 engagement.

OK guys, I've found evidence of yet an earlier version of See See Rider than the February 23, 1970. On the website: http://jordans-elvis-world.com/audio/rare/main.htm (http://jordans-elvis-world.com/audio/rare/main.htm) you will find "Live Song Rarities" and on this page there is a list of songs, one of them being See See Rider (together with some more rare jewels!) which has listed that he performed this song on Opening Night, January 26, 1970. To hear any of the songs on this website, you must have RealPlayer, which can be downloaded.

I was just glancing through that list, but I have already found one error. It says that Elvis performed I JOHN in Lake Tahoe on August 17, 1971. That must have been Jesse up there in Tahoe.;) I was watching Elvis on that date in Las Vegas, and he did NOT perform I JOHN that night.:supriced::blink::blink:;);)

Correct.
I'm afraid Jordan's lists are riddled with many errors.

Exactly. But, as Rosanne's post below states, he didn't begin using it as an opening song until 1972.
The first time that I saw Elvis live was Las Vegas, August 1971 and his intro song was "That's All Right Mama". The 2nd time I saw him was in Dallas, November of 1971 and he was still using "That's All Right Mama". He didn't switch to "See See Rider" until 1972.
You are correc, Ma'am. I believe it was January of '72 when he began using it as an opening song.

Great question,
CC Rider rating run down..
1. Album - 'On Stage' Feb 1970 (RCA) OMG, This has got to be the definitive version for me, Elvis is just on fire here. This is Elvis at his absolute pinnacle, just amazing to hear. Listening to James Burton tearing it up makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. (oh to have been at this show) this whole album kicks A*s :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy
2. Album - 'Dixieland Rocks' May 1975 (FTD) Just a Kick A*s crystal Clear version with Elvis clearly having Fun!! (Whole Album is awesome IMO) (y)
3. Album - 'Polk Salad Annie' Feb 1970 (FTD) after the initial fooling around Elvis gets serious... Awesome :supriced:
4. Album - 'Tuscon' June 1st 1976 (FTD) - Very funky Version :wiggle:
5. Album - 'Summer Festival' Aug 11th 1971 - A little rushed but very good (y)
6. Album - 'American Trilogy' Jan/Feb 1972 - Very clear version still getting the full rock and roll treatment :notworthy
That right their kicks all other versions a** imo !!!
