This fun comedy is based on the play "Pioneer, Go Home!" by Richard Powell.
Elvis and his dad Arthur O'Connell have three, unofficially adopted children and Anne Helm, who is in love with Elvis.

On their way through a southern state they suddenly run out of gas for their old vehicle and decide to settle down on an not yet opened part of the highway.
Claiming their rights, they open a small business and start renting row boats, fishing rods and bait. They attract other settlers to the area.

Because their place is out of the county's jurisdiction, some gangsters, Oakland and Kruschen, bring their gambling trailer there and obviously they attract a crowd and a lot of noise.

The homesteaders select Elvis to be their sheriff. But the gangsters hire criminals to beat up Elvis. With his knowledge in Judo, Elvis finally chases the gangsters out.

In the meantime Joanna Moore, who's working for State Welfare, is investigating the family and wants to have the children out of there, because she claims it's a "bad moral climate" in which they are living.

During a courtroom scene Arthur O' Connell and Elvis plead their case and eventually make the judge dismiss any legal charges.

Original working title: "Pioneer, Go Home!". Other working titles were: "What A Wonderful Life", "It's A Beautiful Life" and "Here Come The Kwimpers".

Filming began on July 11, 1961 in Crystal River, Florida.

Joanna Moore was married to Ryan O'Neal for three years. She's the mother of Tatum O'Neal.

The song "A Whistling Tune" also was written for this movie. It did not appear in it though and was used in "Kid Galahad" instead.

A very enjoyable comedy. Very funny script and excellent supporting cast.
Everyone seems to be having a good time. Fine soundtrack which contains one of my favorite movie songs, "Angel". Wow, I would have given anything to be Elvis when he kissed Anne Helm after singing that song. I think she was one of his prettiest co-stars. Especially in that sequence.

I love this movie. All the songs are great. Elvis does a great job of playing a light comedian. His hair is his natural color! I love the twins, and the scenes where they share the candy bar. And I think the court room scene is great when Elvis is talking to the judge. Geez, I think I'll go watch it. Ya'll come over. I got the popcorn too   :newyear: :xmas: :king:

I love this movie. One of my favorites.

Very funny, with a good story, but also a good dramatic scene at the end where they are at the Courthouse fighting for custody over the children. One of Elvis' best acting scenes IMO.

I think he looked soooo good in this movie. The beach and ocean in the back ground just sets off all his good looks. I dont think his hair is dyed black in this one. It doesnt look like it to me.

IMHO, one of Elvis' best movies. He plays a wonderful role and often doesn't receive enough credit for the fine acting job in this movie. Playing the comedic part that he did is not easy to do. In addition, the songs are also quite good. Not too many, but just enough. One of his best acting jobs.

Yes, I love this movie. It is so funny. Elvis really did a great job. I think even a non Elvis fan would like this movie. Of course I don't know how you cannot be an Elvis fan. (y) (y)
