That`s my first time hearing the original.........even on that version it sounds like the song was written for Elvis........Like the alternate take by Elvis as well...not sure if I`d agree that it`s the best version though......I always feel that something else gets added when he`s doing it on stage, just a little extra bit of magic.
Thanks for these....enjoyed and appreciated!!(y)(y)

You are right Jack. Every time I saw him "Suspicious Minds" was always one of the highlights of the show for me.(y)

I never heard the original before, either. Nice to hear it. (y) Elvis definitely makes the song very special, I can't imagine anyone else singing it the way he does! :notworthy
Thanks, for sharing Liz. :)

Was nice hearing the original version.
Elvis' version sure is better, puts so much emotion into the lyrics. Thank you!
Who is singing the original? Is it Mark James the writer?

According to the YT post, yes. Mark James is the one signing the original. I read that he recorded this the year before Elvis went to American Studios and recorded, but James' version didn't even make a wave. Apparently, he was one of the music composers that worked for American Studios. Chips Moman thought that Elvis had the "rough" voice which would be better on this song.

Didn't Marty Lacker use to take credit for Elvis recording Suspicous Minds ?

Thanks I thought it was him, but had never heard it before.

I've never ever heard of that. I know that Lamar Fike took credit for bringing Kentucky Rain to the studio at American. Chips Moman owned the publishing on Suspicious Minds and there was a stink b/t he and Col. about it b/c Chips didn't give up any of his rights to the song when it was recorded. I don't think Elvis cared b/c he really liked the song, but he never recorded there again. Sad, b/c that was one of his stellar sessions.

Those '69 sessions shows probably the most inspired Elvis music ever!

If you listen to the undubbed lyrics, they are absolutely AWESOME!!!!!!! I have 2 CD's that have alternate takes of those songs and I cannot believe what a phenomenal sound came from that studio and how incredibly unbelievable Elvis' voice sounded!!! It just makes me think of how wasted his talent was during the 60's (except for this gospel album and Comeback Special)!!!!!!!!
I believe that Elvis knew he could sing, but I do not think he knew just how truly incredible he really was!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting to hear the original but Elvis' version is so much better, I was actually bored listening to Mark James!! He wrote a great song but it took the talent of Elvis to really put it across and make people listen. I also remember reading that it was Elvis' idea to do the false ending with the fade out and then bring it back up again, pretty cool!!!

Sure Elvis' version is better but that's not half-bad. If we didn't have the classic to compare it to i think we would better appreicate Mark's version

Wow! I've NEVER heard this before! Sure is fun to hear the original versions. I agree with everyone else here, Elvis sure had a knack for making a song COME ALIVE!!!
