Elvis plays a young truck driver who is a great succes while performing during a political rally in the town where he's delivering beer.
He's singing there because press agent Lizabeth Scott and bandleader Wendell Corey.
They even talk Elvis into joining the band and by starting small-town appearances Elvis becomes very popular.
Elvis signs a contract with Scott, without Corey knowing.
Allthough Elvis is interested in the girl singer Dolores Hart, he's also very attracted by Lizabeth Scott.
After Scott buys Elvis a red convertible as a publicity stunt (she claims it's a gift by an anonymous widow) the band has to cut expenses and Dolores Hart gets fired.
Elvis joins her for a visit at her farm home and enjoys his time there with her family.
Scott brings Elvis back to town. But after Elvis finds out she's Corey's ex-wife, he leaves and has an accident with his old car.
Lizabeth finds him and takes him back for the big concert they've got scheduled.
Together with Dolores Hart, Elvis accepts a television contract and asks Corey and Scott to represent him.
