:supriced: What's this I see?

I knew about them being used for Burning Love in the broadcast show and for the post-broadcast session, but this was news to me.

During Welcome To My World, when he accepts the handkerchief from the fan and gives the gift of sweat ;) , it goes to the camera angle from behind him (just at the end of the line, "...still happen now and then")--that's when you see 'em.

It's funny too, because he must not have been paying too close attention to them then; that's one of the handful of songs that he goofed up a little lyric-wise in the rehearsal but nailed for the broadcast.

But I think it's quite significant that he had them for the rehearsal show. I always assumed that for Burning Love, since he seemed to fairly often have a little trouble getting that song just right (which is in evidence during the rehearsal show), he got nervous about that happening for the big event and demanded cue cards for that song. But it looks like he required them for other songs too. Perhaps it was the plan from the beginning to use them and so they "tested" them for him at the rehearsal show. What I'm wondering now is, for how many songs at both shows were cue cards used?

Yep, cue cards gallore ;)

So far I think the only (offically filmed) shows I haven't seen cue cards on are TTWII and On Tour (can't recall the CBS special, haven't seen that one in forever :'( )

I can't imagine him using cue cards during TTWII or EOT at all.....and they weren't used during "Elvis In Concert", either.

The cue cards during the main "Aloha" show were used on "Burning Love".

There were cue cards for others as well; you can see them in some of the photos. Obviously, not for stuff like Hound Dog.

A very sensible idea, in case he stumbled. Wouldn't want to do that on a worldwide telecast.

Lots of cue cards, CD 2 you can totally see them in rehearsal but they were also used in the "Live" telecast as well and are quite visible in parts.:)
Like Getlo said, nothing wrong w/that.
Frank Sinatra used a teleprompter...
It's just a safeguard, you don't want to mess up, not during a live performance.

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, for one.

There's a pic (maybe in the gallery?) from the sound check that shows the cue cards clearly for this song, with several others behind it.

There are also other pics (again, here?) that show them during the performance.

I don't think he would've used them much; or if he did, he didn't show it.

And, as Suzan pointed out, there are glimpses of them during the performance/s.

No, Tom.

That was a note from a female audience member, advising Elvis of an invitation to visit her room ... and detailing some of the things she'd like to do with him.

Cue cards are large sheets of cardboard, held behind a camera, so the performer can read words to a song, or a monologue.

Hi Tony! :D
My apologies, I don't know the specific songs just that there was cue cards out in front of the stage....I can rewatch and write down the songs if you'd like?
I also took screencaps but unfortunately did not take any of the cue cards BUT there are a couple I believe in the gallery.:)

Also I did not forget about that other photo I am still on a search for it.:D

Thanks, brother. I'll have to get out the DVD and watch it again.

Getlo...is that what he looks at during "Polk Salad Annie?" Is that where he reads the little note and hands it off to Charlie??

i saw the cue cards on the extra numbers, don't recall them during th show, but i'm not surprised, don't the producers automatically supply them just to cover their own hides? that way the performer has no recourse to blame someone else for their mistake - not that Elvis would ever do anything like that! 100% southern gentleman, him.
Elvis may or may not have used the cards, he didn't look like he did, and i might add that he wasn't shy about taking the actual lyric sheet on stage with him, lol.

Yes, it was a note from a female fan. Elvis chose to keep his "poker face" rather than react to it. It was apparently quite racy. Can't remember where I first read this, though ...

I thought it was funny that at that particular moment he decided to take it out and read it in the middle of the song.

I don't see nothing wrong with that either, god the pressure of doing a concert in front of all them people god i would forget my name LOL and i went to see Lisa-Marie live at much music ( like MTV ) and she had a little screen that looked like a sparker with the lyrics too i don't see nothing wrong at least they don't lip sing(y)

I've often wondered about that....I did always think it was from a female fan....how on earth was the note passed on to him? I'd think they wouldn't do that often - otherwise ALL of the females would pass sex notes to him!!!! lol....

Hmmm.... :hmm:

I was always under the impression that the little piece of paper were lyrics to POLK SALAD ANNIE too!! :supriced:

That's interesting that Elvis was using cue cards during the Aloha show (although not surprising)....I knew he used them for the "insert" songs that he recorded after the show was over, but considering the time of night that he was filming those songs (along with the fact that some of those songs he hadn't sung in years), I can see where he would need them!!

Gail.....go back to 73. Remember how the Hilton added the runway to the stage? I heard once that it was so cue-cards could be used. In fact....I believe Elvis told that on 08/06/73 when I was there. I'll listen to the CD and get back with you...

In the past 12 months I have attended a Brian Wilson concert (he had a small screen attached to his keyboard with which he read the lyrics to every song) and Glen Campbell who had a screen near the footlights, also displaying the lyrics.
The use of cue cards is a very common practice.
As someone else said, at least he sang live.

It may be worth noting he didn't use a cue screen for EIC, although he resorted to lyrics for My Way.
I sang for a while with a band and i would have the lyrics of some tough songs on the floor.
With the Banana Splits Song (yes we did that - good rockin' version too) the bass player and I did a duet and we held the lyrics.
One ight we had to improvise some old rock'n'roll songs (long story - a friend's band was book for a old-style rock night and turned up playing 80s stuff so called on me and my cohorts to help out with a few old Elvis songs) and it was bloody hard

I'll have to watch it so take what I say with a pinch of salt but the cards I saw were what I thought were "We Love You Elvis!" placards being held up bythe audience. Where he does need help with the lyrics is with "My Way" (as usual) and that's why he sings the first verse next to Charlie with the words on his music stand. If he had cue cards out in the audience why would he have needed to do this?

Lonniebealestreet
01-22-2008, 09:48 AM
Interesting question. I'm just speculating but perhaps they did not have cue cards for all the songs and Elvis decided he needed the lyrics for My Way sort of late in the game.

By the way, old thread! When I first saw it I thought someone had hijacked my account, as I did not recall writing that. Ol' Lonniebourbonstreet at it again.

a girl in the audience give Elvis the note during Sweet caroline
In TTWII and he then puts it in his belt.I noticed this when I first saw the movie back in the erly 80īs.

and I remember thinking when I saw TTWII SE in a movie theather here in denmark(I have seen it on dvd first),when Elvis read the note during polk salad annie ,that now the audience gonna think that he could not remember the lyrics, because Sweet caroline where no longer in the movie,so the clip of the girl giving Elvis the note was gone.

Yes..it was. That's the CD from opening night..08/06/73 right? I have been meaning to listen to it the last couple of nights, but I do think it's where he makes a joke about not being able to read the cue-cards. :D I was there in the summer of 71 and 72, but the runway didn't appear until 73....:hmm:

And how long did that last? You're saying the Vegas Hilton had a runway like the Aloha stage, correct?

Did I know that?...if you'll pardon the inner monologue. Do you have any pics in which this is evident?

I believe I have that recording. I may pop it in tonight.

Starting by saying, I have no knowledge of this, but watching the clip, I dont think its a sex-note. In the middle of the song in a pause of the lyrics, he takes out the note from his belt, reads very concentrated and hands it over to Hodge without any grin on his face. Very calculated and prepared in my opinion. He sometimes had a note with him on stage, if he had problems with remembering the lyrics, there among I Just Cant Help believing. Best regards, Martin

In the original theatrical version of TTWII you see the note given to Elvis and he puts it in his belt. If you buy the new TTWII 2 disc set the original theatrical version is included. When I saw it in 1970 at our local theater my wife and I speculated as to what exactly the note said.
