the Elvis fan base is very large and eclectic.

i was just wondering how old everyone was, and when did you get into Elvis.

i'm 35 years old. i was 4 when he died. the day he died was the first memory i have of him. i remember seeing the reaction of my family and that sparked the question "who is Elvis".

a day or two later, my mom and i went to a department store called "BEST" and she bought every Elvis record they had. the total was over $300. we even had duplicates. she literally grabbed every record, threw 'em in the cart and to the register we went.

immediately i had my own treasure and i didn't even know it yet. i remember immediately gravitating towards the picture disc for "A Legendary Performer Vol. 3" and "Hound Dog" sinking it's teeth into me.

so, 31 years later, here i am.

TCB, baby!

My first memory of Elvis was in 1973 when i was 7 years old. My parents had sat down to watch the Aloha special. I was on the floor playing with my barbie dolls. The music started and I saw this beautiful being singing and I was hooked . I sat for 2 hours in a trance. I knew at that moment fairytales were real because I had seen a real Prince. Suddenly Barbie and Ken became Barbie and Elvis.Whatever it was that night this man took a hold of a little girl`s heart and never let it go. He has been with me all my life. He has helped me through some real rough times. I will share with you a very special Elvis story that happened to me many years ago but i have to be in the right frame of mind to share it. Kim

I am 26 and I got into Elvis around 5 or 6 years of age. Thanks to my mom constantly watching AMC and TCM all the time when I was younger. If he could catch a 5/6 year old's attention and hold it, he was something special.

I loved this post Kim..you have a wonderful way of expressing yourself. I can tell you that I know exactly how you felt that night. The very same thing happened to me in 1968. I was 9 years old when the 68 Special was shown for the first time, yet I remember that night as well as if it were last night. He captured something in my heart and in my soul almost instantly, and I knew he would always be a part of my life.  Here we are 40 years later, and I have never lost that hold he has on me. It's a feeling that I know I will take to my grave...he is a never-ending presence in my heart. He touched a part of me that no one ever will. I thank God every day that he was here in the flesh during my lifetime.:notworthy:notworthy:notworthy

Kim...Rosie...I too can relate! (y) I heard Elvis long before I saw Elvis, because I was raised on his music. I remember that for a long time in my VERY young life we didn't have a television, but we had records! My parents were very into music...more so than anything else. The 68 Special was the FIRST time I ever saw the man, and I was entranced by him! :goggles: It was not just one thing about him...it was everything about him! There was no way to explain it. HE was ELVIS! When the other kids at school were into the "fad" types of music and the newest bands, I would listen to them, but I never layed Elvis aside. :nono: They just didn't have "IT"!

Trisha Yearwood had a song titled: "The Song Remembers When". To me, that song says alot about the connection between my life and Elvis. It seems that every single song that the man has ever sang will jolt my memory and send me back to a specific time and place that I normally would maybe have forgotten. Strange...I know, but true. I guess I devoted so much time to him that he became almost woven into the fabric of my life. A real part of me. From the times when I was melancholy, to the times when I was on top of the world, and all situations in between...there is a song that remembers it. :king:

Perhaps my son has summed it up best... He once said, "Mom, Elvis will never really be dead to you, because you keep him alive in your heart." :'( And I do. So for as long as I live, in my heart, so too lives Elvis.:king::wub:

I never heard Elvis'music before TTWII ! I went to see the film because I heard "Patch it up". I was so :notworthy  (thanks to the smileys because it's not very easy for me to write my feelings in english :):P) when I saw him on the screen, that I went to the cinema 7 times in 7 days !

And, since this film, he is a big part of my life. He's "always there to lend a hand" in bad moments. And his music shares also the good moments of my life.

You know what ? He's a very good friend of mine :king::blush:

My dad became an Elvisfan in his early teens (1956/1957) and bought EP's and LP's throughout the 50s and 60s. During the 70s he bought less albums, but still loved Elvis music.

So born in 1975, I grew up not listening much to Elvis (my dad did not play it very often) and didn't remember when Elvis passed away. But I remember browsing through an Elvis picturebook that my dad bought in oktober 1977. Years later that became somehow my bible. Not able to read, those pictures made it clear that Elvis was different than anything else I've seen: from the 50s to the 70s.

I loved playing my dad's Elvis albums and make my own compilations when I was about 8-9 years on. And that was the moment the ELvis virus got me and thank god, I was never cured from it.

When I was about 11-12 I was able to save money and tried to find out what albums I (or actually my dad) missed. That was the start of the never ending search for new music and digging into the past, trying to find out what made Elvis 'The King'. It's a wonderful treasure hunt.

The first time I was aware of Elvis a friend of mine made us sit down and watch Love Me Tender. I just didn't see the big deal .{Of course, she was female and interested in things I just wasn't interested in about him.;)}

After that I was always aware of him, mostly his music. I grew up and had a busy life, getting an education, taking care of my own family. etc.
I never went to see him until 1977 . After that, I was hooked.
While collecting his music, I was never crazy about his movies.
After he passed away, I became more interested in "knowing" the man than anything else . He's a fascinating study. Truly, a person one never forgets !

I'm proud to say i've been a fan since 1956, Elvis has always been a huge part of my life, through good times and sad times.
He has owned a bit of my heart which i never want back,it's true what you say, Elvis will never fade away, as long as there is an Elvis Presley fan alive on GOD'S earth he will always be around.

Wonderful posts everyone (y)

I'm 15 now and I've been a fan only for 2 years and since then, I can't think of a day spend without at least a little Elvis in it. He's become a huge part of my life and the amazing thing is that through him and thanks to him, I've made a few wonderful friends  I first saw Elvis performing the Aloha From Hawaii show on TV. Before that I knew who Elvis was, but never really paid attention to him and his music. When I heard that wonderful voice and saw that beautiful face I knew I was hooked...and once you are hooked on Elvis, you are hooked on forever :king:

This is a great thread. We have such a great bond between us . Everything everyone writes can be my own feelings toward Elvis. This is great therapy! After all these years I have had so many things I wanted to say about my connection to Elvis and here I am letting it all out. I just love it! Lea, I can`t believe what you said about the song 'The Song Remembers When" I bought that cd because of the connection it gave me to Elvis. Wow! Great minds think alike. I will sum up Elvis this way " Face of a Greek god, voice of an angel, heart of gold." I think I am off topic , sorry! Keep you stories coming...

I have been an Elvis fan since about 1967, a friend had one of those reel tape players and we was in his house one day and was bored to death, as teenagers often are!, when he put on this tape and was playing different songs when on came " return to sender" so I got him to play it about 12 times in a row. Elvis has been a big part of my life ever since then, he was on the radio ( radio Luxemburg, Tony Prince) the first time I kissed my girlfriend ( the song was " Just can't help believing") who is now my wife of 32 years. I can also listen to songs of his and it takes me back to different times in my life some good, some not so good. When he died there was such a wrench as my heart was torn from my body, that to this day I can not watch or listen to Elvis without that sadness comes to the top.Even now after all these years there is still that empty space in my body that will never be filled. I am so jealous of all the new Elvis fans who will get the excitement of listening to an Elvis song for the first time, that feeling you get, there is nothing like it in the world, sadly as I have said I will probably never get that feeling again, but I still get a lot of pleasure from listening and watching Elvis, LONG LIVE THE KING

Suspicious Minds
05-24-2008, 05:49 AM
I was 13 when I became an Elvis fan. At Christmas 1969 I had the single Suspicious Minds and the album Elvis sings Flaming Star. Of course the curiosity got my attention when I read the back of this album. Elvis had 4 Golden Records albums and 2 Religious albums. Because of this history I started to find out more about Elvis Presley. I am the only Elvis fan in my family. I have been an Elvis fan over 38 years. Never stopped loving Elvis music or watching his films.

I was 11 years old and just getting into rock and roll music on the radio when I heard Elvis sing "That's All Right Mama" in 1956. His unique voice caught my attention right away...already hooked and didn't know it. A little later I saw a photo of him in a magazine and thought "wow, voice and fantastic looks too". I've never been the same since and wouldn't change it for the world.:)

There was a beautiful tribute to Elvis with that song, but it's been removed. Like you Lea, I associate EVERY thing in my life to a song. The first bar, and I'm right back at whatever year that was.
Like you, I heard Elvis before I saw him. When I was 4 years old I began to LOVE music and learned how to operate my parent's stereo. I learned to associate that black record label(RCA) with the 2 songs that I wanted to hear over and over. The 2 songs were Bossa Nova Baby and Good Luck Charm. I would play them over and over..and at times I would dance to Bossa Nova Baby. I STILL play Elvis over and over..I just don't always dance like I used to! Then..when I put that face with that voice I already loved, I was a goner!:notworthy:notworthy(y):king::king:

I am 29,i became an Elvis fan at the age of 9.

That special day i became a fan,my mom and dad were reading the TV guide and said there was a movie playing called "loving you"of a man CAlled Elvis.

The name intrigued me,so i asked my parents who this "Elvis"was..they responded in a strange way..WHo is Elvis? they said..well he is a mAn more famous then the Pope or jesus.
I was so amazed by that...but the movie played after my bedtime.
So there i was in bed at the age of 9,thinking about this Famous man "Elvis" i heard som music playing at night,so i decided to act as if i had to pee,to see a glance of this "Elvis"
So i went to the living room, and for the 1st time my mom said, hey just come sit on the sofa with us and watch this movie..there he was,for the 1st time in my life i saw Elvis,in the bar Scene of Loving YOU,singing, mean woman blues..i was so intrigued by his looks and voice ,i never saw him before, but he looked familiar to me as a family member, or something, there was something special about it,from that moment on i was HOOKED!

I was eight years old when I became a fan! I'm sure that if you check my profile you will be able to work out that it was 1977! Unfortunately the day of Elvis' death was the day that I became a fan.

I was at home with my mum and dad when it was announced on the news, some guy called Elvis had died and basically the whole news program was taken up with interviews and clips of some strange and exotic creature who captivated my attention. I could see that my mum and dad were shocked at the news, so I asked many questions most of which they couldn't answer.... So the search began to find out who this guy was, why he was so popular, why so many people were inconsolable. I needed information, all of which I got in abundance over the years!

It's difficult to explain why you are a fan in just a few words. There are so many reasons to being a fan that it would be difficult to explain it to a none Elvis fan.

The picture below is me in bed in my bedroom when I was about 10 years of age. So many happy memories discovering Elvis' music and so many films to watch during the summer holidays. The great thing about becoming a fan when I did was there was so much material around, you didn't have to wait around, it was already out there.

I remember when I discovered the Madison Square Gardens album...... Pure Heaven, just Pure Heaven!

One thing that I guess goes in favor of the fans post 1977 is that the bad stuff is already out there! The pictures of the overweight Elvis, the drug stories, the two way mirrors, the woman & a whole host of other things that somehow have become a millstone to the legacy! I don't doubt that there were many fans who were disappointed with Elvis and the way his life turned out... for me that intrigued me all the more to search out the man, the person who actually stood at the top of the world and demanded to be heard!!!

I suppose there is a watershed for post and pre 1977? Whatever way or time you discover Elvis you will never regret it :D

My first time :D was watching Elvis in the movies. Elvis singing "Return to Sender" was my first experience of seeing him. "Blue Hawaii" was my next, (Elvis' music was involved in a family occasion that was special to me) and of course, from then on. I still haven't re-watched a lot of Elvis' movies as they haven't been available (I've re-watched some), when they have been aired, so I just bought some yesterday.

I was (still am) mesmorized by Elvis' kindness, his humour, his sense of fun. The look on his face, I thought that he was the man for me, so I looked for him in other people's features and personalities.

What really affected me as a woman, many years later, was learning about his story, and processing his story, from an adult's point of view.

Elvis' life story made him the incredible person he is; furthermore, I just have more empathy and respect for him now, the more I learn. I don't think my respect for him could be higher.

“Love is patient; love is kind
and envies no one.
Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude;
never selfish, not quick to take offense.
There is nothing love cannot face;
there is no limit to its faith,
its hope, and endurance.
In a word, there are three things
that last forever: faith, hope, and love;
but the greatest of them all is love.”

I've been an admirer of Elvis since I was about 10. Mom had a few videos - Clambake, Blue Hawaii, she had his music, and she talked to us about him, but she wasn't hardcore about it. i really became a fan when I spent a weekend with my aunt & uncle. My cousin was INTO Elvis! i guess that it's easier to listen to a peer than a parent :( - sorry MOM. I'll be 24 this year and there's not a whole lot of people who i can talk to about Elvis without getting the snickering or eye-rolling, Elvis is just so easy on the soul, his music jsut speaks to me,
but Alannah Myles says it better when she sang

Every word of every song that he sang was for you In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon

I'm 37 and i don't remember a time of not knowing who Elvis was or Elvis' music. When i was say 3 years of age i would put his records on the stereo at home and sing along. By five "i wanted to be a singer just like Elvis" when i was asked by the teacher at Kindergarten what i wanted to be when i grew up.

I have always known who Elvis was. My Mum had three or four of his records that were in the house and from that my collection grew.

My first lullaby was an elvis song, my father used to sing me elvis songs to put me to sleep or when i was upset to cheer me up.My parents have always been huge elvis fans and knew when they had kids they would pass their love of elvis onto us, and im always thankful for that. I just cant see my life with out elvis to me it would just be so empty and so boring. As of now elvis is such a big part of my life me and my family go to all sorts of elvis festivals and shows and have made such great friends. This makes me respect and love him even more, with out elvis i wouldnt have the life i have and for that i am forever grateful

Later that year my grandmother took me to downtown San Diego on a bus to see the opening of "Love Me Tender" and I was truly a gonner!!! I stayed a fan all through my youth and in the 70's when I was in my early twenties....was lucky enough to travel from San Diego to Vegas many times to see Elvis just a few feet from me. I can't think of anything in my lifetime that made an overall bigger impact on me than ELVIS PRESLEY...the man and his music.:king:

I'm a fan of Elvis since last year, I listened to Elvis before but only to the well known songs. Then I listened to the not so well known Elvis songs and it blew my mind.
Why didn't the radio play T-r-o-u-b-l-e / Stranger in the crowd etc., he sang more than just Hound Dog. IMO there are no bad Elvis songs (except his movie period, but that has a reason).

There's so much more though the general public have no idea what they are missing out on.

Do I really have to reveal my age?? :D :D I'm just kidding! Okay, I'm 34 years old (almost!) and I've been an Elvis fan since I was very small, 6 or 7 years old. One night I said goodnight to my family and went to sleep. But I couldn't. There was a show on TV, kind of Elvis tribute show or something. My parents were watching it. I remember lying in my bed when I first heard him singing "Love me tender" and I immediately fell in love with his voice. I got up and got a glimpse of his face on TV. That was it. I asked my parents "who is Elvis Presley"?? Next day I found myself begging my mum crying to buy me his record with "Love me tender" in it! That was the beggining. THANK GOD I COULDN'T SLEEP THAT NIGHT!!:P

Well I can't remember when or why I became a fan. It seems that I think so as long as I can think. I was listening to his music long before I ever saw a picture of him and this was difficult enough 'cause I grew up behind the "Iron Curtain" and it was nearly impossible to get some of his music. My parents made it somehow that I got some self-recorded music casettes. In the mid-eighties a biography was published which I read in one single day.
So I can't say what the first entire album was I had but what I can say, the first movie I ever saw was "G.I. Blues" on television.

I also can't remember exactly when I became a fan. I'm 45 and I grew up with Elvis music. I remember riding in the car with my parents and the 8-track player wailed out Elvis religious songs. I knew them by heart and would sing along. I remember asking my mom to tell my dad not to sing since he sounded terrible! :D At Christmas, we listened to his Christmas album. He was just always there.

My mom just recently gave to me my scrapbook from 1977. I just sat and re-read all the articles a few weeks ago. I have always felt this strange connection to him that I have never been able to explain to non-Elvis fans.

My 12 year old daughter is in the same position I was cause all she hears is Elvis and has been an avid Elvis fan for a few years now. I am going to be 54 next May. Have been a fan since 1962. My aunt was a huge fan and took me to see "Blue Hawai" at a drive-in and I was hooked.
She bought me "Elvis's Golden Records Vol 1" for my next birthday and that solidified the deal.

I am 29 years old. I've been an Elvis fan for a little over a year.

It all began when I heard the song "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison on Youtube. At first, I thought it was Elvis that sang it so I thought to myself, "Maybe Elvis isn't that bad at all! Looks like he is more than just a white jumpsuit." So I went around Youtube looking up as much videos as I can with Elvis songs in them. Before you know it, I became an Elvis fan. Now, all I listen to is Elvis and I know I am driving my wife and kid crazy.

Now back to the song "Pretty Woman." It was a month later before I found out that it was sung by Roy Orbison.

I'm a brand new fan. I've always known who he was but wasn't into him. In April of this year I was moving from Virginia to Arizona. I drove my car and my parents came along to hepl me drive if I needed a rest. We went the southern route so just before getting to Memphis mom said she wanted to stop by Graceland. I didn't want to but dad said we could so we did. After going there I couldn't get the music out of my head and about a week after I got to Phoenix I bought a CD and the rest is history. I'm 24.
