Hey guys, this is my first thread and I thought I start with something special and tasty. I have heard much about Elvis' favourite food, the sandwich with peanut-butter and banana, so I thought I try it for breakfast today. Woooow, I can tell it is delicious!!!! It really tastes wonderful. I recommend to everyone, except those who are on diet or have diabetes. :P :P I am curious, has anyone else tried it? Well, it looked like this (I made the pics with my webcam before I ate it):

i've been eating these since i was about 5. I'm 37 now. i agree i like them. I think the media have pumped it up a bit about how much he ate them. He did eat something called Fool's Gold as well.

They're a few Elvis themed cookbooks out there that have some really good recipes in them, like black eye peas. he really liked pork chops as mashed potatoes.

Being a southerner myself, I don't find Elvis taste in food strange at all. Whatever we are raised on is usually what we eat all of our lives. PB and banana sandwiches are very common in the south. Some people eat mayo and banana sandwiches, but I much prefer the PB instead. Yummy!

Thanks for sharing cibetty, and the trouble you went to, for presentation.
I have to ask, though. It the colour correct in the photo? It is just the peanut butter looks dark grey, there? (LOL, just curious).
Take care,

I saw in lisa's interview a couple times and she doesn't know where the peanut-butter and banana came from cause she never seen elvis eat it?? guess elvis ate it when she was in bed or out and about. Here is something l came acoss
The following recipe was taken from The Presley Family Cookbook, written by Vester Presley, Elvis' uncle and a guard at Graceland along with Nancy Rooks, a Graceland maid.
Degree of difficulty: Low
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
You need:
2 slices of white bread
2 tablespoons of smooth peanut butter
1 small ripe banana - mashed
2 tablespoons butter
Method:
Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread and the mashed banana on the other. Press the slices gently together. Melt the butter (or do what Elvis did and melt bacon fat), over low heat in a small frying pan.
Place the sandwich in the pan and fry until golden brown on both sides. Eat it with a glass of buttermilk.
Serving Suggestion: Elvis may have eaten 12 of these in one sitting...you may find one to be sufficient for a quick meal.

it has to be fried, the banana sweetens when it's heated, it's great

We make a peanut butter/banana sandwich by mashing the banana, adding the peanut butter to the mashed banana and stiring it together. We eat it on white bread but do not fry it like Elvis. Elvis probably grew up eating this because money was in short supply. Kids growing up in "our" days, ate a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches........peanut butter/banana just a different variation. It is a comfort food that was probably fixed for him by his mother. If I remember correct, George Kline said that he never saw Elvis eat a peanut butter/banana sandwich. That it was something picked up by the media.

I agree with Roseanne - That certainly was excellent presentation!
I remember seeing a video of Elvis' cook teaching how to make the sandwich
Elvis' way. She certainly was a cute lady, very much a southern character!! :D

The colour was correct on the pic, Kim and Rosanne. Oh yes, I have to correct myself, because it was not peanut-butter, just a similar candy, it was a Hungarian peanut-cream, and there is much cocoa in it, that's why it looked darker. But guess what, I bought real American peanut-butter (its color is lighter of course, and a bit salty, so not so sweet and contains more peanut). So I made it again, you can see it. I ate it with milk anyways. And I also tried how it tastes in fried version, here it is, and there is another pic (the last one) from net:

I'm glad that some others also tried the food :) :) I think I'll start a diet tomorrow :P :P It was a little bit too much to my Hungarian stomach. Anyways I agree, the media maybe picked up this, of course he liked other foods, I'm sure. Here is a story about this candy. Maybe it's true, I read on net, on this site, where you can read many other interesting stories:
http://members.tripod.com/sharoncarrell_1/unknownstories.html
"During one party, Elvis was desperately craving peanut butter cups. When he was unable to find any in the house, he asked a young boy to go down the street to buy a carton of his favorite candy. The boy, all too eager to run an errand for Elvis, agreed. Elvis gave him $10 and told him where to go. The boy ran to the store, bought the candy, and ran all the way back. He did not want to make Elvis wait. Elvis ripped open the carton, took two packs of peanut butter cups for himself, and distributed the rest amongst his guests. After devouring the candy, Elvis approached the young boy and asked, "Can I have my change back, please ?"

this is the right way to make it. the only difference is that i mix the peanut butter and mashed banana together.
try adding a few spoonfuls of honey to the mixture. it's lip-smackin' good, man.

The cook at Graceland said the peanut butter and banana sandwich was not a regular meal it would just be something as an apetizer.
But Elvis liked southern foods, stuff he grew up on. Like he said, when he was in germany he never ate out at a restaurant not once...it was either in the mess hall or at home. He loved Creamed Potatoes, Steak, they had all kinds of steaks, BURNT bacon, all that good stuff...but not good for you health wise !! ;)

That sure is interesting! I'm pretty sure the press and media would exaggerate it though.
I don't know what to think of it. I don't see how I could eat that for breakfast. In general my eating habits are different in the sense that I don't like that much meat and fat (considering American eating habits).

Hmmm.... it's 11 PM here, so I'm getting hungry again :D
Here's a nice piece:
The Elvis sandwich (sometimes simply "The Elvis") is a fried sandwich consisting of peanut butter, bananas, and sometimes bacon. It was supposedly one of Elvis Presley's favorite foods in his final years.
The sandwich that has become known as the Elvis is simple to make. This recipe comes from his cook:
Toast two slices of soft white bread in a toaster. Spread peanut butter on one slice, slice banana on top of the peanut butter, and cover with the other piece of toast. Fry the sandwich in a hot skillet with melted butter.

:pepsi::diespam::diespam:Yes,i'm from the south and us "younguns" would get hungry and Moma would fix us a jelly sandwich or Pb& J . We ate whatever was eatable. Like Gladys probably had bananas and penut butter and it was a quick sweet snack for Elvis as a child. And the rest is history.

My husband was brought up on peanut butter and banana sandwiches although not fried. His family is from Texas. For some reason it never appealed to me...I like strawberry jam or preserves with my peanut butter. Maybe some day I will try it.:)

I saw one of Elvis' cooks make the PB/Banana sandwich on David Letterman, and I have to say it made my heart hurt.
She put a half pound of butter in the frying pan to melt
put a whole banana, sliced longwise on the bread and almost a cup of PB on the bread - closed the sandwich
THEN BUTTERED THE BREAD ON THE OUTSIDE
and dropped it in the frying pan
it wasn't fried, so much as deep fried in butter - that sandwich was in butter up to the bottom slice of bread
Letterman looked so green, it was funny.

there was also the Denver place that made the Fool's Gold sandwich
a whole french loaf, jar of peanut butter and a pound of bacon.
Elvis once famously had the Lisa Marie fly there to get one.
I've had PB/Bacon sandwiches, regular bread and a reasonable amount of PB with 3 slices of bacon and it is good.
I also used to get the crepe shop I used to go to make me what I called the Elvis crepe
A crepe with peanut butter and bacon with banana slices - and it was wonderful.

I just watched the video that CiBetty uploaded. Thanks. It made me wonder what Elvis's favorite peanut butter brand was. Doesn anyone know?
I am learning to do food that Elvis liked and I'll trie it too.
