Everyone here is very familiar with Elvis' 1968 Comeback Special that resurrected him from a string of silly movies and put him back on the path of performing infront of live audiences.

With the anniversary of his death last August, 2007, all of the outtakes were released along with the original special that was aired in December, 1968.

I do not know anyone that attended any of the live performances that were taped before an audience, but if anyone does exist, please stand up and share!!!!

Moreover, I have a few questions that I am unable to answer from the outtake material released such as:

WHO IS TARNELL (Lawdy, Lawdy Miss Clawdy)??

Did anyone know that during one of the taped stand-up concerts, someone yelled out for him to "take it off" when he says that the leather suit is hot??

Did anyone know that Steve Binder said recently that during the 1st sit-down show, Elvis had an 'organic' experience??

Did anyone know that during the second stand-up concert, while waiting to finish the final number, someone asks him about his daughter?

Did anyone know that during each of the "leather" taped events, he acknowledges Priscilla?

Did anyone know that during the second sit-down show, he brought members of the audience to tears when he sang "Blue Christmas?"

Did anyone know that after the first sit-down performance, Elvis ran to Steve Binder saying surprisingly, "they still like me!".

Did anyone know after the 1st stand-up performane, Elvis had perspired so much, he almost couldn't get out of the leather suit that needed to be dry cleaned before the 2nd performance???

Did you know after the last sit down session after singing Memories Elvis passed out as he was leaving the stage at the bottom of the steps!!!!

That is something I've never heard, although I did read that he was literally spent after the 2nd show!!! It must have been the heat and the leather suit (here we go again with that **** suit!!!) that caused him to do that!!

It sounds like "Moby Dick" but I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. I believe that much of what he says is supposed to be little inside jokes for him and his guys!!!! But it seems like I heard him say that say phrase on something else, but cannot recall!!!

I always thought it was 'darling' until I listened to it on my hubby laptop with earphones!!!! Actually it's Scotty Moore that says "Can you sing me that song about Tarnell?" and when Elvis launches into the song, when you gets to the part of "Tarnell" the other musicians start egging him on, razzing him, so I deducted Tarnell was some chick from the 50's that only Scotty and D. J. Fontanta would remember. So, Tarnell, if you do exist, you are one lucky chick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hmm::hmm::hmm:

About Elvis fainting if you watch the DVD were he is standing onthe steps and finishes the song they kind pull the camera away as he faints and the crowd screams the band jumps up yelling his name as they shut the camera off!!

Moreover, I have a few questions that I am unable to answer from the outtake material released such as:

Did anyone know that Steve Binder said recently that during the 1st sit-down show, Elvis had an 'organic' experience??
umm, although this is very interesting, i don't quite buy it. it's more one of those comments to peak interest, imo.
Did anyone know that during the second stand-up concert, while waiting to finish the final number, someone asks him about his daughter?
i'd love to see this. i gotta buy that deluxe edition. is this clip on YouTube yet?
Did anyone know that during each of the "leather" taped events, he acknowledges Priscilla?
how does he do this, does he say something to her, or nod or point inher direction? i never noticed this, but then  i only have eyes for ELVIS!!!

Steve Binder was quoted on BBC and the link is found in Wikipedia (if you can't believe Winkpedia, who can you believe, right?)

I do not know if there is a YT clip. It is, however, on the recently released 3 dvd set.

In the first show, he actually says "Look Cilla", (long whistle) "looks serious, dead serious" and then breaks into Are You Lonesome Tonight
In the second show, he begins Are You Lonesome Tonight and during the first verse says "Boy, isn't she pretty" and then whistles.
In both stand up shows, he repeatedly sings directly in her direction and motions for her to stand-up during Love Me Tender.

I have one more triva bit:

Did you know that when he sang "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold" at the end of the 2nd sit-down session, as he sings the last note, he winks and grins to someone off in the audience, quite possibly Priscilla, as in both shows he had looked over in that same direction repeatedly.

I found this clip on Youtube from the first show. You can see him looking at someone in the audience but I can't make out the words "Look Cilla". You can hear him say "looks serious, dead serious". My PC speakers aren't very good though! This is about 49 seconds into the clip.

I've seen photos of Cilla in the audience, so I know she was there and I wouldn't at all doubt that Elvis spoke or motioned to her during the show for moral support if nothing else, but I just don't hear it in this clip. And I am not at all doubting you, Liz.
I think I hear Scotty saying Tarnelle, but I'm not positive. Maybe it's just a private joke between the guys, because Elvis says Lawdy Miss Clawdy in his story to the audience. I'll wait for Sara to read her book and report back to us, too. :D

Well TT...I do believe you are right once again! ;)(y)

Now, either my hearing has gotten really bad of late, or we are all guilty of selective hearing, one of the two! Because I promise you...it sounds like Scotty is saying "Can you sing me that song about 'toenail darlin'...and then everyone laughs, which makes me think that they were maybe poking a little fun at Elvis! :P Probably an enunciation thing, IMO. :)

:hmm::hmm: You know, I think that this portion of the show was discussed in another thread (somewhere) before. I distinctly remember there being a debate over it due to the fact that there are men sitting on both sides of Priscilla, and everyone was trying to figure out which one it was that she was allegedly having an affair with at the time.... Does anyone else remember that thread??? I did listen to the clips that are posted here and everyone is correct in that it isn't clear what is being said, especially since more than one person is speaking at once. I have watched and listened to my dvd (the remastered 3 disc set that was released last year) and it is very clear that Scotty specifically says "can you sing that song about Tarnell?" but before I actually heard this line b/f the song was sung, I always thought it was 'darling' but he does say "Tarnell".

As far as Elvis acknowledging Priscilla, he does say (sort of off mike) "Look Priscilla" I never paid attention to that before and then when as I watched it on my laptop with earphones, the sound is incredible and you get much more of the background discussion than just his voice up front. Why is is not very clear on these YT videos, I don't know; maybe the video loses something in the transfer. I am no computer genuis, but I know what I hear on my dvd.

I may have to dig it up when I have time. Perhaps there will be something in that thread that could point to whether or not he actually spoke her name or gestured toward her. I just don't hear it either Lisa.

As for Cilla being in the audience I am pretty sure she was there, because she mentioned that in her book and the woman on the pics Danielle posted in the other certainly looks like her :hmm: But, here's another thread to discuss on that subject.

Liz, I turned the volume up and it was so loud that my sister started shouting at me from the next room to turn it off because she was studying , but I still couldn't hear anything that sounds like "listen Cilla". I don't have the deluxe DVD set to check that by myself, but I am not doubting you at all. It's true that a video loses much of it's quality when you are uploading it on youtube. The thing that bugs me is that I watched his mouth carefully too and I couldn't see anything.
How many times did Elvis perform Are You Lonesome Tonight on the Comeback Special? - maybe we are all listening/watching the wrong version, lol. I've noticed that he sometimes made the same comments before the songs :king:

He performed Lonsome Tonight on each sit down show. The first show, which is probably the most popular is the show that seems to be causing all of the discussion. Right before he begins singing, the guys are talking among themselves (very difficult to follow the conversation), Elvis says something about "this leather is tough" and then Charlie says something else. And then Charlies says "your mike is getting low again" and Elvis response "its falling apart" and then he goes begins strumming a tune and sort of comes out of whereever his mind drifted momentarily. He looks up and -- off mike, says, "Look Priscilla" In fact the word 'look' isn't even heard. It would just make sense in the scene that look would preceed her name. Then he says 'dead serious' and then whistles.

I will concede that it is not very clear. Much of the off mke conversation isn't, but I really love my new dvds b/c it is remastered and much of the background conversation is there. There are more bits of conversation among Elvis and the guys, but apparently no one seems interested in that.

The other version, which is the second sit-down show, he does say "Man, she's pretty" and then whistles. As he says this the camera was actually moving away from him, but you can see it stop and sort of bobble around and remain on him. No one knows who he was whistling to b/c he doesn't say a name, but I would imagine it would be his wife since we all agree she was there and he was being filmed for the world to see. I looked on YT last night and was not able to find a clip of the 1st show that would be better quality than the original that I have. If you ever have the opportunity, get the new discs. They are great. There is so much more to hear. It was like I was watching it for the first time. The same can be said about TTWII.

Where is it you think Priscilla was sitting?

"If any individual of our time can be said to have changed the world, Elvis Presley is the one. In his wake more than music is different. Nothing and no one looks or sounds the same. His music was the most liberating event of our era because it taught us new possibilities of feeling and perception, new modes of action and appearance, and because it reminded us not only of his greatness but of our own potential.

It was the finest music of his life. If ever there was music that bleeds, it was this."

Back to the subject of 'Tarnell." I watched the 1st sit-down show again and after he sings Lawdy, Miss Clawdy, a few songs later, he sings Trying to Get to You (which is so awesome, by the way!!), and somewhere along the middle to second to last verse/chorus, either, D. J. Fontana or Alan Fortas, shouts out something that sounds just like the name "Tarnell" and Elvis gives a quick laugh and/or acknowledgment. I cannot imagine someone yelling "toenails" or any other thing that sounds just like what is exchanged just prior to singing Lawdy, Miss Clawdy.

In this YT video, at 5:48, you hear someone yell out, but again, on the YT video, the sound is not the same quality that you would have on newer dvd.

And "they" say he didn't know how to play guitar! He goes along way with his own self-admitted "3 chords"!
I love how in a time of 'flower power', long hair, unkempt clothing, etc. Elvis makes a strong statement in Black Leather [and hot looks]! Is that the paradox he talks about?

I think pretty much everything Elvis learned about the guitar was during the 50s. After he came back from the Army he just did not learn much further. But he had little need to do so-except for his own enjoyment. (When you can get the best guitarist to play on your records.) Johnny Cash said Elvis's rhythm guitar playing was excellent in the 50s. His playing in the 68 special showed his rhythm ability with the little fill runs to add to the music.

I have been wondering about "Tarnell" for years now! At least now I know I am not the only person confused . My guess is that it is an inside joke, but if it is it went on for a long time since I've heard it in some of the takes of it from the 50s all the way to the 70s. Also, I have wondered what he has said in the second verse of Lawdy Miss Clawdy (I give you all my money...), to me it sounds like "You like to ball every morning" but I am not sure. Sometimes I clearly hear "You leave the home every morning" (espcially in live 70s versions) but other times I hear "You like to ball". Does anyone know if that is what he is sometimes saying?
Also, thanks for posting all those facts, they are so interesting!

Well, lawdy, lawdy, lawdy Miss Clawdy
Girl, you sure look good to me
Well please don't excite me, baby
I know it can't be me
Well, I give you all my money
Yeah but you just won't treat me right
You like to ball every morning
Don't come home til late at night

I'm gonna tell, tell my mama
GirlI swaer to God what you been doing to me
I'm gonna tell everybody that I'm down in misery

Another littel piece of trivia from the 2nd sit-down show -- Somewhere in the middle of the 2nd performance after he stands up, sings and sits down again, he is wiping his face and gets a piece of lint stuck to his face. Then he proceeds to wipe his face again and he says -- off-mike and very low - "I'm gonna turn white again." I am guessing b/c he is sweating and wiping away the make-up, but its something you cannot hear unless you have the newer release.
