Elvis & Ricky did meet but there weren't any photos taken. Elvis loved Rick's music. He told James Burton this exact thing when he (or rather, Joe Esposito) called James to ask him if he would front the TCB Band.

I was wondering the same thing. Why there are no photos of Elvis and Rick together? I know they knew each other. Elvis met Ricky Nelson, at a party in his hotel after the show at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles on October 28, 1957. Elvis approached Ricky Nelson telling him "Man, I just love your new record" and that he loved the "Ozzie and Harriet Show" saying he watched it all the time. When photoplay editor Maria Borie told Elvis that Ricky was about to go out on tour for the first time and could use some advice, Elvis took Ricky aside and gave him some tips on what to do on tour. "You'll never know how much tonight has meant to me" Ricky told Maria Borie later in the evening. "Imagine Elvis Presley watching our show. He repeated episodes I'd even forgotten about! He remembered them word for word. And he gave me some great tips about things to do on my tour."

It was actually October 29th.

Are you sure of that date Elvis was in St. Louis on Sept 10th 1970 for his second concert of his first tour? The day before he was in PhoenixThe only reason I know this is because I tried to get tickets to that show and it sold out in hours.

Rick Nelson Remembers …
I met Rick Nelson at a strange juncture in his life. It was 1984, and, at age 44, he was all grown up, his hit-making days long behind him. He was playing the Fairmont Hotel, in a room more accustomed to the likes of Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald. But he was comfortable, tossing out his hits and his wonderful blend of country, rockabilly and rock.
Backstage, before his opening night show, I asked about Elvis. There were rumors about Col. Tom Parker being interested in managing him. He shrugged off that question, but talked openly about his old buddy. When Elvis died, he said, “I was really sad about it. He was a good friend of mine. He inspired a lot of people; he WAS rock and roll.”
Because of their touring schedules, he said, he didn’t see Elvis the last five or six years of Presley’s life. “But back in the 50s and early 60s, I saw a lot of him. We became real good friends. I was a big fan of his, and he listened to my records. He always liked the music, the guitar player, James Burton.” Presley even hired Burton to play behind him, at recording sessions and on tour.

Perhaps it was August. I may have misread my reference book. I'll check it later.
Also lets not forget they met for team football games in the 60s. On the new dvd box set of "Ozzie and Harriet" TV shows their is commentary on one episode between Ricks youngest son and Ricks brother David concerning the football games between Elvis's team and Ricks team.

Read in an old "Elvis Monthly" that the first time Elvis and Rick met face to face was on the set of "Love me tender"......don`t know how true that is...no photo with the article..unfortunately.

I don't think that's possible because Ricky didn't hit the airwaves musically until his cover of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'" in 1957.

Thats true Tony but Ricky had been on his parents TV show "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" since 1952. Elvis had watched the show and Ricky was a huge Elvis fan-before he started recording. He virtually started singing because his girl friend liked Elvis records. So it might be possible Ricky wanted to meet Elvis before he had recorded "I'm Walkin"

I still sorta doubt it. Seeing that Rick didn't record "I'm Walkin'" until 1957 and didn't start performing until that year (although I somehow do seem to remember that he did start performing in '56), how could Elvis had mentioned how much he liked his singing a year earlier? Maybe Elvis did somehow catch one of Rick's performances....

Oh I did not know Elvis was suppose to have said how much he like Ricks singing in 56. I was just commenting that it would have been very possible for them to have met in 56 since Rick was part of a hit show on TV and liked Elvis. Rick did not start singing solo on the TV show until "I'm Walking" came out in 57-so Elvis could not have mentioned Ricks singing in 56 (unless he was talking about some of the family sings which were sometimes in the show. Ozzie was a retired band leader on the show(although the joke about the show was what did Ozzie do for a living since he was always home)

Yep, it could've been possible. I still find it very odd that no photos have ever surfaced of them meeting after all these years.
FWIW, Rick's sleazeball manager, Greg McDonald, convinced Rick to hire him (McDonald) as his manager by telling him he (McDonald) was related to Colonel Parker--which was B.S. By all accounts, McDonald was a latter-day Colonel Tom Parker in how he managed Rick.....
In the 55 or 56 year Halloween show from Ozzie and Harriet Ricky dressed up like Elvis as his costume with fake sideburns and guitar.

Yep thats the one I seen in the booklet of the Ricky Nelson Legacy Boxed set I have. I have played with it before to try and make it bigger so I could get a good look at it but it always distorts.

Sorry, shelley, but that pic is fake. Whoever made it originally did a poor job as well. The pic of Elvis is very common.
Edit: come to think of it, I have the same pic in an old magazine, at another location. Rick is actually looking at a cardboard cutout of Elvis in this pic. The caption in the mag makes reference to it, as I recall.

Yeah! I have this same picture in an old magazine from 1958(?) I believe. This photo was used by Rick's kids in the 2005 PBS special,as well in the Rick Nelson Legacy box-set.I read that Rick was "stocking" Elvis in 1956 by parking outside the Knickerbocker Hotel, when Elvis was staying there while making Love Me Tender.
Rick wasn't "stalking" Elvis...he sincerely wanted to meet him but was too shy to approach him.

Jim E.Curtin had done a number of books on Elvis. Can't remember the name of it(?) He had written that Rick had his car parked around the corner from the Knickerbocker Hotel to get a glimpse of Elvis and then one day,Elvis decided to check it out and came up from behind Rick's car and asked Rick what he was doing.Don't know how true that story was or where Mr.Curtin heard it from.As for the spelling of "Stalking" it was a late nite here in Canada.(sorry Elvis folks!)

I would really love to see photos of Ricky's football team playing Elvis' football team, or better yet - home movies!!! Wonder if homemovies exist? Surely someone
on Rick's team had a wife or girlfriend out there watching and filming!

Seem to remember Rick causing a stir when he released "Garden Party" and he sang the line "If I had to sing the old songs,I'd rather drive a truck." Some looked on this as being a dig at Elvis for sing his old songs in his shows. What do you think?

Rick was joking because Elvis was still singing his old records. When Rick sung Garden Party he did not do any of his old records and was booed for it.

No.
Rick was joking because Elvis was still singing his old records. When Rick sung Garden Party he did not do any of his old records and was booed for it.
Once again, this is a complete myth. The real reason that Rick was booed was simply bad timing. When he got up to move to the piano to sing "Honky Tonk Women" (by the RS), the cops decided to remove some unruly (drunk) fans in a certain section of MSG and the booing coincided with Rick moving to the piano to sing HTW. After Rick walked backstage, a security guard came up and explained what happened.
Although, Rich was finally relieved to know what had actually caused the booing, he swore the SCB to secrecy and asked them to stick to the "booed because he didn't sing his older material" story......

Well, that's the popular myth behind the song.
Nelson was playing a Richard Nader R&R revival show in NYC in Oct. of 1971.
The audience reaction to Rick was strong ... yes, he was dressed casual and had long hair, and he threw in some newer material from his current album, Rudy the Fifth. All was received well.
The problem came when some fans in front moved closer to the stage. NYC cops
pushed them back, and the fans in the balcony jeered the cops. Rick actually thought they were booing him.
As soon as the concert was over, Rick's people assured him of the facts.
Nelson quickly wrote and recorded Garden Party, based on his perception of the event while on stage. He also told everyone around him to stick with the story.
Great song, possibly the biggest pop comeback song of all time.
It didn't hurt Rick having Allen Kemp on lead guitar and backup vocals.
He sure knew how to pick great guitarists.

Minor correction: The fans were in the upper section of MSG and nowhere near the front of the stage...
The cops tried to remove them (and apparently succeeded) and this action coincided with Rick moving to the piano to sing "Honky Tonk Women" (I like Rick's version of this song, actually). According to what book you read or who's story you choose to believe, Rick actually got a fairly nice response. According to Tom Brumley, Rick only heard the "booing" and he honestly thought that the audience was booing him...he didn't know 'bout the cops taking the one guy out for smoking marijuana....
There's an excellent biography out on Rick and, IMO, it's probably the absolute best bio I've ever read on Rick and the Nelson family. It's called "Lonesome Town: The Real Story of 'America's Favorite Family'" by Jim Brady. It's a huge paperback book...696 pages!

I've read Jim Brady's book, as well as Joel Selvin's book.
Both are good bios.
Selvin's book also states that Rick's MSG show was a hit, and also mentions the booing
just prior to Honky Tonk Woman. But Selvin definitely mentions that Rick was immediately told of the booing directed to the cops, not Rick
As a side note, I was fortunate to see Rick perform many times in Toronto from 1981-1985. I had two tickets in my hand to see him with the Jordanaires at The Royal York for Jan.1986, when I heard the news of his DC-3 going down on New Year's Eve.
It felt like losing a member of the family.
At 45, he still had the matinee idol looks ... definitely the most charismatic performer I've seen live.
Here's a pic I took at The Ontario Place Forum, Aug.1,1982.
What the heck, while I'm deep into my archives, here's a pic my high school
buddy took of Elvis in Niagara Falls, NY ... sorry for the terrible quality.

I've never seen any photos at all of Elvis and Rick together and if you know where these photos can be found, I'm sure we'd all love to see them.....;):hmm:
If David has any pictures of his brother and Elvis he has sure kept them under wraps. Ricks fans and Elvis fans have been yelling for years to see a photo of the 2 of them together. If David has any I hope he lets them out.

Don't think so,Cliff.Towards the end of his life Rick went back to using the name Ricky because Carl Perkins had called him Ricky. He also ended up singing all of his earlier hit songs in concert too.Even at the age of 18yrs old Rick didn't like being called Ricky anymore. To him,I guess it really didn't matter, since his real name was Eric.
