We all know that Elvis is the King but so you guys think that Elvis thought that he was the King? I think he shows it when he walks off the stage from the Live Aloha broadcast I can almost hear what he is thinking to me I think he is saying "Yeah I am the King." What are your thoughts?

The King's Queen

Nahhh...I don't think he thought of himself that way. He once told a fan that there was only one King, and that was Jesus Christ. So, IMO, he thought of himself as a person who was picked from millions to experience an extraordinary amount of fame...he kept searching for the reasons behind this, but probably never found them. I think that he tried to keep it 'real' as much as possible...although he did enjoy his fame and the benefits that came with it...but he never let himself get above the average person. Which was endearing to his fans, to say the least.

Yeah I heard that he said that to a fan before. Thats why I think he is the greatest ever. This man is the true definition of a superstar and he never demanded these crazy demands that these people today want and he was always very humble. People should take a lesson from Elvis. Just because you are famous doesnt mean you have to be a nasty person.

When he was touring in the seventies, the concert promoter asked him what he needed, basically he could have anything he wanted, all Elvis wanted was to make sure that there was 6 soda's, preferrably Pepsi. I just recently seen a pic of his dressing room at the Internation/Hilton in Vegas where he got changed, not much bigger then a closet, and certainly not something you would expect for the biggest star in the world. The point I'm trying to make, unlike other stars who want carpet changed, or who make ridiculous demands prior to a concert, Elvis remained humble, as much as a man in his position could have been.

Like he pointed out when someone called him King..He pointed at the sky and said "There's only one king" So no..i don't think he did think of himself like that.

Look, most celebrities today - as they have been always - are well mannered and polite. It's only the few clowns that make life difficult for their staff or when they meet the public.

Some people are making it sound as if Elvis had the monopoly on being nice.

Elvis was a true southern gentelman. He said yes sir and no mam to his elders. And he never thought (i don't believe) he was "the king". That name bothered him just as much as "Elvis the Pelvis". Of course we call him ""the king" out of respect. Like the Kings Queen said there is only one king (jesus christ) and i believe Elvis thought the same. He never got above his raising as we say here in the south. What i mean is his parents taught him to never think he was better than anyone else..but of course he was as far as music is concerned.

Like Getlo says, the majority pay for the bad manners of the few, although these days, it's more than just a few.
But Elvis, upon leaving the stage was really proud of a job well done. I wonder if he was as nervous before the satelite show as he was before the Elvis 68 special?

I think he had to see so much adulation- "he had to feel his oats every now and then" That confident walk across the stage at the end was one of those moments IMO.

With all due respect, I've seen this claimed on Elvis forums before - but I've yet to find a source; can some one point out to me in what book (or elsewhere) this is documented

I think he was proud of a job well done. Whatever a man's chosen field is they seem to feel alot of pride in accomplishing a good job at what they are doing.(y)

Yeah, I just thought what he did was real cool. The way he walked off the stage for that show was amazing. Nobody else has ever done something like that.

You know I never really thought about it will have to look around. But lets suffice to say that compared to the extravagent demands of rock stars of the last 30 years-his were quite small in comparison I'm sure.
I found this comment in an article about an Elvis concert in Cleveland in 1975.
http://www.elvisconcerts.com/newspapers/press90.htm

Coliseum owner Nick Mileti said Presley was a pleasure to work with. "He made absolutely no demands, and his only request was that we give him the dressing room closest to the stage."

I definitely remember seeing it, though off-hand, I can't remember who said it, though I'm guessing it was Jerry Weintraub of Concerts West. Sorry I can't be of more help.

There's a fantastic video on YouTube where Elvis is going on stage
and of course is entering from the kitchen. The workers are in the
break area and they rush the hallway where his MM are ushering him through. He stops to talk to a couple of maids in a stairwell. I
remember one of the MM saying Elvis did that a lot and it irritated
them because he had to be on stage, but Elvis never left a fan
wanting. I would post the video, but obviously, it isn't one I've saved!

No, but he didn't have a monopoly on being a jerk either.

yup very true but sometimes you can see the way he struts accross that stage the way he presented himself it was like yup i know am elvis and i know am dam good thats just how he came across sometimes but i don't think he knew thats how he came across he never bragged or pretended to be any better or any worse than anyone he was just a man doing the job he was put on earth to do i don't think elvis knew just how amazing he was he knew he was good but i don't think he ever knew how much everyone loved him and how many would miss him when he was gone he was just truely a remarkable human being with a fantastc talent who had flaws and hard times bad times and good times like everyone else just all round elvis presley

I actually doubt if Elvis ever asked himself "Am I the King?......I think he actually believed he was "just an entertainer"...I don`t think he tried to evaluate it beyond that........I think he wondered a lot as to why he had the success that he did,and what he was meant to do with it.

No I don't think Elvis had a big ego either. In some ways he was very unsure of himself. He always moved the same way from the beginning on. He was blessed with a straight posture and very lithe movements. Oh sure I'm not saying he didn't know what effect he was giving off but I think he just got a kick out of that. Not sure if he was really aware of how his movements affected anyone of whether they were just reacting to him because of who he was. I'm glad he had fun with it either way. :)

That is so true Diane! Every time we were in Vegas my Dad would comment on his posture. Daddy always said he had the absolute BEST posture he had ever seen on a man...(y)

I agree he had very good posture up until 77.
In 77 did anyone else notice it seemed he was getting a slight sway in his back? Or is it just my terrible eyesight and some bad angles which gave that impression to me.

I totally agree, he had a very straight posture. (y) (y) I also realised this, and I think it made him more attractive. I also think that he sometimes was unsure of himself and he really never said about himself that he was the king, he really said that Jesus was the only king. I absolutely didn't feel when I was watching the "Aloha From Hawaii" concert that he wanted to show that he was the king. It caught me when he said to the audience at the end of the rehearsal concert, before the worldwide broadcast: "I'll need all help I can get". I just felt that he loved Hawaii and he loved his own country very very much. The eagle on his suit, which he showed at the end of the concert, is the symbol of America as I know well. I think he just wanted to do a great show, he wanted to make those people happy who loved him. That was his life. He didn't want to be a king, NEVER. Anyways here is that scene which I have written about, I love it very much. I'm curious what do you think, I really think he didn't want to be a king at all:

Elvis had a large ego, and rightfully so, however he also treated people nicely. He was just a nice guy.

Elvis was beautiful and he was loved and I don't think so many people would think so highly of him if it was generally thought he had a big ego. My impression was always that he did NOT. ELVIS simply worked hard at being the image he felt people wanted from him and that included standing tall and walking the Elvis walk. (((ELVIS))) :king:

I am not saying Elvis had a large ego, what I am saying is that when he walked off the stage during Aloha, it just had that look that he was thinking "Yeah I am the King" It was so dam cool the way he walked, man it was great.

Sure he had an ego, although I think that may have declined substantially by 1977, but i don't think he saw himself as 'The King'.
Note he takes the crown at the end of Aloha but he doesn't place it on his head

:hmm: Elvis always seemed very nervous and insecure about himself, IMO.
He was a great actor. He just "played a part" Parker set up for him.
He just happened to be blest with good looks and a tremendous voice..
All things together made it work !
IF only he could have seen in himself what others saw .
