View Full Version : Lamar Fike's New Boook

Just found this information on ElvisNews:
Fike - An Uncommon Movie?
Veteran PR man David Salidor, who will be handling publicity for the book "Fike - An Uncommon Journey", hints in an interview with The Improper that a screenplay will soon be in the works. The book is co-written with music writer Marc Bego who also collaborated on David Stanley's 1996 book Raised On Rock as well as on books with Micky Dolenz and Martha Reeves.
From the interview:
Lamar Fike, the man who for years ran Elvis Presley’s publishing company in Memphis, is hard at work with writer Mark Bego putting the finishing touches on a new book entitled An Uncommon Journey. It seems that this one-time member of the King’s “Memphis Mafia” is willing to finally share all his untold stories.
He also reveals a rather odd connection to this particular bit of tub-thumping. “My Dad had worked for the legendary Decca Records back in the day and knows Lamar,” Salidor explains. “So, when we first spoke, Lamar said to me, ‘I met you when you were five at the Copacabana in New York.' Amazing and, true.”
Meanwhile, in a synopsis of the book posted on Fike’s official website, the former King best pal makes a rather intriguing comparison: “Let me tell you, The Memphis Mafia was the original Entourage… I never knew what to expect when I was around Elvis. There would be Hollywood starlets in the pool or Natalie Wood would drop by for a visit.”
And how’s this for a side trip? In the book, Fike also recounts his experiences in Rome with Tennessee Williams and Hercules actor Steve Reeves while Elvis was stationed in Germany.
Well, I wonder how this "tell all" book will be??
Anyone planning on getting this when it comes out?? :hmm:

I will skip on this book.
Me too, especially since Fike teamed up with Marc Bego, who collaborated on a book by David Stanley ...do I smell another Albert Goldman disaster coming?
For those not in the know, Lamar Fike was very helpful to Albert Goldman when he was putting together his thrashy book, and that book is widely despised by most, if not all (?) Elvis fans

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.Fike is a likeable and entertaining person. That's probably why Elvis had him so close for so many years.Fike was a true insider and I think he could have some interesting stuff left to tell.

You know what gets me about Fans that put the down the bodyguards?
When most the information people think they know about Elvis came mostly from bodyguards writing tell all books.
I would buy it to see if there are any new stories that haven't been written about before.

Here we go again.....bashing someone we don't even know!
Lamar has always been one of my favorite members of the MM because of his sense of humor and I also believe he truly loved Elvis--as did all of the MM. I know a lot of you don't like Lamar for the reason that he was the one who provided Albert Goldman with research for the "Elvis" book in 1981 but the thing is that Albert had his own agenda and viewpoints to use for that book to make Elvis look as bad as he possibly could because Goldman absolutely hated Elvis to the core to begin with--and sadly, Goldman did make Elvis look horrible and even had Goldman not chose Lamar for the research I still feel like the book would have turned out the same way--just like I fully believe that the "Elvis: What Happened?" book could have been better had Steve Dunleavy not been chosen to "ghost-write" that book. Lamar had absolutely no say in how Goldman's book was going to turn out--he just provided the research for it. Elvis isn't the only one that Goldman wrote unflattering comments about during his career as a writer, either.
Goldman even contacted Sonny West to be interviewed for the book and when Sonny found out about the horrible things he (Goldman) had written, he called him himself and gave him an earful and told Goldman to never contact him again and to throw away his telephone number and address.
Elvis loved Lamar, even though he teased him mercilessly because of his weight. When Lamar had intestinal bypass surgery in 1976, Elvis kept the phone line open for nearly 48 hours and paid all of his medical bills. What does that tell you about his relationship with Lamar? And something else: Lamar was honest with Elvis. If Elvis did a bad show, Lamar wasn't afraid to tell Elvis the truth--unlike "Good show! Good show!" Joe Esposito (That quote is in reference to Joe complimenting Elvis on his afternoon performance in Jacksonville, FL during the April tour while they were filming "Elvis On Tour").
*waits for the backlash and flaming and rock-throwing to begin*
I'd actually love to meet Lamar someday....I'd love to meet all of the surviving members of the MM. They all have made big boo-boos over the years but they were there with Elvis and none of us were...and they're not going to be here forever. Whether good or bad, I'm thankful that they're here with us to share stories of their time with the world's greatest singer and entertainer--Elvis Aaron Presley. Although it took a long time, I've forgiven Red, Sonny & Lamar (and any other former MM member) who may have made unkind statements about Elvis. I hope that someday more of us will.
I hope y'all don't mind me expressing my viewpoint....

not from bguards..the best information comes from Elvis himself..
Elvis can't give us any information as of Aug 16 1977. Even so, Elvis' version was always extreamly candy coded. He would even stick to publicity stories from the 50s by stating on stage," I went into Sun Studios to make a record for my mother's birthday". When he went in to get discovered. He was of the old school of celebrity mindset that you should maintain a clean image or you'll lose fans.
Most of the stuff Lamar has said even in the Albert Goldman book did surface as truth. He admitted that Goldman just went over board to sell more copies. No one came out and and said that book was 100% wrong.
So I think it would be interesting to read this new book. The information on it will be known as fact, once people get over the newness of another bodyguard making an easy dollar on Elvis. I give it one year before people start quoting on the message board from it.

Youre comments are full of common sense..Lamar and Elvis were very close in spite of Lamar being the resident punching bag.He just tells it like it is.It's not his fault Elvis turned out the way he did.He never would have had anything sensational to say if Elvis hadnt provided him with it.Dont shoot the messenger.

Well, considering working for Elvis was, in most cases, their only career, they probably don't care how much money they make as long as they make money.
And my guess is most of these guys probably get paid an advance for their memoirs, so it's almost like an instant payday before they even sit down to write one sentence!!

The payoff for most of these books cant be very much. The books that are continously published on Elvis come from small publishers. Many of them from overseas. In reality it's a small number of books that are sold. This is true with only a few excpetions. The days of a blockbuster book on Elvis are long gone. The Schilling book probably did better than many recent ones in regard to sales.I would be curious to know how many were printed. The total is still probably a fairly low number.

Well, I don't think that Lamar is any worse than any of the others. I just think that they all have cashed in on a man who gave them all he could give. He shared secrets with them, and thought that they would respect him and remain loyal to him. I guess they all figured that since he was no longer alive, all bets were off! I won't buy it. I don't want to 'feed the need' any longer. Maybe if we stop buying their books, they will stop trying to 'remember' new things to write about.
