View Full Version : Mal Evans claim of tape made in Beatle meeting
I heard today on a radio station a claim that Malcom Evans (the Beatles road manager) claimed he turned on a tape machine on Elvis's mantle and recorded four songs jammed by Elvis and the Beatles. The story claims he was allowed to take the tape with him as a souvenir for the Beatles.
He kept it for years- then came back to America. He went to a bank to cash a check and had it in a bag with him-there was a holdup at the bank and he was shot and killed by stray gunfire. Supposedly the tape was put in a locker at the Los Angelos Police station and no one knows what happened to it from there. Anyone ever heard this before? The guy telling the story was a Elvis impersonator and he claimed that George Harrisons sister (who lives here in Illinois) told him she had heard tape years ago. It seemed to be pretty farfetched.

There could be some truth to it. For years Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the late George Harrison all have gone on record claiming that they have heard the unreleased EP/Beatles tape. So there's a possibility. All I got to say is that if it does exist and whoever has it has the biggest lost treasure in pop culture history. Lucky them.

Until I heard this guy today, I have never heard anything from anyone about a tape-except the comments that "no tape machines were present"
It would be nice if it exists, but I'm not holding my breath.
I don't know I hear from one guy ( different MM guys at different times) they Jammed and it wasn't recorded. I read from another that doesn't remember them playing at all. I always remember George Harrison saying he remembers them shooting pool but not sitting around and jamming. Ringo not too many years back on one of the late night shows said he doesn't remember anything much about the meeting at all. Now someone had a tape but it was lost. If there is a tape I think it would be better to remain buried forever because it couldn't possibly live up to all the hype and fun people have talking about it as a Mystery. Of course IF it exists, and IF it ever surfaced I'd be in line with everyone else to buy a copy of whatever there was.
Personally, I don't think it exists . If it did it would have come out and someone would have cashed in on it by now .

Wonder if Priscilla knows? She could unlock a lot of these mystery stories.
Actaully, she couldn't. With so much of Beatles secret on ice as it were there is no way that she could find out. Apple Records keeps many secrets on the Beatles and no one will let them in their library to see what they have in it, not even EPE since they have no rights on the Beatles materials. Anyway, I have never heard of the story anyway.
KPM- Mal Evans was killed by police in his rented duplex at 8122 W. 4th Street in Los Angeles. The officers mistakenly believed that the air pistol Evans was holding was a rifle. He wasn't in no bank. He was with John Hoernie who was helping him out on Evans' book "Living The Beatles' Legend". Also, Mal Evans wasn't there the hold time. He left about an hour within the meeting so he could set up the concerts at the Hollwood Bowl.
EP75 - Where ever you got that info you must of either heard it wrong or something. On the Beatles' Anthology, all three have said that no recording devices were present at all. Some years after that, in a interview that they was told about a unrelease EP/Beatle recording and that they said was a fake.
Being a Beatles fan as well as an Elvis fan, I know alot on what is out there and what was recorded.

Well I was only quoting the guy on the radio and that was his story. His claims were supposedly based on interviews Mal Evans had given over the years. The Disc Jockey pressed this guy on his story and asked if it was just an urban legend or was there any real truth-Thats when he claimed George Harrisons sister said she had actually heard the tape.
I have never, ever heard or read that any tape machine was present before this guy on the radio. He was an Elvis imitator and he was singing and telling stories to the disc jockey in between the songs. I never caught his name because I was in my car and they never said it before I went in to work.
But I was suspect at the story-because its contrary to all I have read about the meeting. Just wondered if anyone has ever heard this before.
I looked up Evans and found this item which may prove he had no recordings-at least if the case described here was his:
A suitcase that Evans was carrying at the time of his death, which was supposed to contain unreleased recordings, photos and other memorabilia, was lost by the police during the investigation and became known as the lost "Mal Evans Archive". It was reported in June 2004 that an English tourist, Frasier Claughton, bought the suitcase for $36 at a flea market just outside of Melbourne, Australia, unaware of its contents. By August 2004, however, experts had determined that the documents within the suitcase were photocopies made in the 1990s and declared the supposed archive a fake

The suitcase that went missing was in fact Mal Evans' suitcase. The story is that it contain many unrelease recordings, photos and other memorabilia. But it wasn't lost by a police investagation. It was lost sometime in 1974 when Mal was in Los Angeles with John Lennon and May Pang. That suitcase did become known as the Mal Evans' archive but it was never found at all. The suitcase that Frasier Claughton bought, well he made up that story because the suit case he bought was the same type that Mal Evans lost. Everything was photocopies and the "unreleased recordings" are in fact released on several import labels around the world. As you can see, I know the Beatles stories that has been going around.
Now, a very strange story is that I wonder where Mal Evans' ashes is right now. They was lost in the postal system on its way back to England after he was cremated. What a way to go isn't it, losing your suitcase and then yourself.

I heard the fake recording years ago. Got it from Kazaa probably and I think it was Memphis, Tennessee. Whatever it was, it was obviously a fake because listening to the Elvis part I remember it was easily identifiable as being the studio master.

1)Can you provide any source in which we can hear on record any Beatle claiming about that tape? As far as I know what all Beatles and also Memphis Mafia members have claimed is that there was no such recording neither photos of the event.
2)Yet, some photographs of the Fab Four leaving Elvis home actually surfaced on the net a few years ago, never heard anything related to the so call tape.
Here are some of those photographs from the Elvis Fan club in Chile web site:

The guy telling the story was a Elvis impersonator.
That says it all.
The Elvis/Beatles meeting and jam session is the ultimate Holy Grail as far as I'm concerned.
But the meeting wasn't recorded in any way whatsoever. There's no record of this in existence, nor has there evere been.
As three of the Beatles themselves have attested! ;)

They did jammed with him but it wasn't recorded. All three of the surviving Beatles at that time said that on the Anthology. Also, Memphis Mafia members have said that they jammed but it wasn't recorded.
EP75 - Please name that sources or sources in which they said that it was recorded and I will go through my files on the Beatles and see what I come up with. Again, I have copies of all their interviews either on video, audio or magazines and they all says they same thing, it wasn't recorded. Just only in recent years has photos appeared after the event.

I am completely aware of this, but when one says, "The Beatles", that can be misconstrued as the group, not one individual member.

I think out of all the celebs that Elvis met, the holy grail of sing-a-longs would be the tape of Elvis and Led Zeppelin singing at their meeting in LA in the 70's. I beleive it was Love Me.

Well, if it wasn't the Anthlogy it must in one of the other interviews. Paul was clearly said that Elvis got on the bass and fooling around and Paul got on it and showed Elvis some chords on it. George showed Elvis a few other chords as well. Ringo used a guitar case to have a drum beat. But they didn't jammed all night long. John Lennon did most of the jamming but there was a little bit where they are did but they was really fooling around.
Trelane P - Led Zeppelin is a good group but not better than the Beatles if there ever was a recording of that day then EP/Beatles would be the holy grail of music itself.

Paul and John are the ones who have said they got out guitars and jammed.
George and Ringo were playing pool and gambling with some of the guys.
I recall that Paul supposedly told Elvis "Coming along nicely on the bass Elvis"
because Elvis was playing a bass. How long they jammed I have never heard.
Here is Joe Espositos recollection from an interview:
So, OK we made arrangements for one night a couple of days later. What happened is that Colonel Parker and myself had two limousines picked us up at Elvis house. At the house was Elvis and Priscilla, and my wife Joan and a bunch of the guy's girl friends and wives and stuff. And I went to the house. The two limousines. The boys had a house rented up on Coldwater Canyon. We went up there -- two limousines -- we went inside, met the guys and a couple of their friends with them. Got in the limousines. Colonel was with John and Paul in one limousine. I was with Ringo and George Harrison in the other car and a couple of other guys, Malcolm the road manager. And we all go back to the house. The Colonel, you know, being the promoter that he is, he leaked it out that the Beatles are meeting Elvis tonight. So we get out there and there's thousands of kids hanging all over the walls, climbing the trees, and reporters. And we pull in, go into the driveway and all the boys get out and we went to the door and Elvis was there to greet them.
Now some people say that Elvis wasn't there, but Elvis was standing there, from what I remember and a lot of the other guys remember. Elvis and Priscilla were there to meet the guys, and they were introduced and Brian Epstein and people like that all walked in to the living room -- the family room. And the TV was on -- Elvis always had a television on -- all the time. I don't care what it was, it was always on. It was like his company, I guess. So we sat down and they talked for a little while. It was really quiet. They all just sat there and looked at Elvis. They didn't know what to say. The same thing I told you about before. I've met big stars too and I didn't know what to say either. So they're the same way. And like John Lennon said, 'If it wasn't for Elvis Presley, there would be no Beatles'. So they idolized this guy. And that's where Elvis got up off the couch and he said, 'Well, if these guys are all going to sit around and look at me, I'm going to sleep'. And they said, 'No Elvis, we're sorry we didn't know what to say. Let's sit down and talk and relax'.
Then they went and got a couple of acoustic guitars and sat around and started playing some old songs. You know oldies, but goodies songs --Chuck Berry tunes and just some instrumentals. I mean, that's what I remember. Some guys say they didn't play. Some guys say they do. I heard them I thought. Unless I'm losing my mind, too.
Also here are quotes from John and Paul about the meeting"
JOHN He had his TV going all the time, which is what I do; we always have TV on. We never watch it - it's just there with no sound on, and we listen to records. In front of the TV, he had a massive amplifier with a bass plugged into it, and he was up playing bass all the time with the picture up on the TV. So we just got in there and played with him. We all plugged in whatever was around, and we played and sang. He had a jukebox, like I do, but I think he had all his hits on it. But if I'd made as many as him, maybe I'd have all mine on.
PAUL That was the greatest. Elvis was into the bass, So there I was, "Well, let me show you a thing or two, El..." Suddenly he was a mate. It was a great conversation piece for me. I could actually talk about the bass, and we sat around and just enjoyed ourselves. He was great. Talkative. Friendly and a little bit shy. But that was his image. We expected that, we hoped for that.

Well considering George says he was pretty much high that night that may be a possible answer. He has also said he never met Priscilla that night- but the others say she was introduced to them all:
GEORGE HARRISON Meeting Elvis was one of the high-lights of the tour. It was funny, because by the time we got near his house we'd forgotten where we were going. We were in a Cadillac going round and round along Mulholland, and we'd had a couple of "cups of tea" in the back of the car. It didn't really matter where we were going - it's like the comedian Lord Buckley says, "We go into a native village and take a couple of peyote buds, we might not find out where we is, but we'll sure find out who we is." Anyway, we were just having fun, we were all in hysterics. (We laughed a lot. That's one thing we forgot about for a few years - laughing. When we went through all the lawsuits, it looked as if everything was bleak, but when I think back to before that, I remember we used to laugh all the time.) We pulled up at some big gates and someone said, "Oh yeah, we're going to see Elvis," and we all fell out of the car laughing, trying to pretend we weren't silly, just like a Beatles cartoon

Not saying that Harrison version is the definitive one, but Joe recall canīt be taken as the ultimate true neither.
The only thing I could say is that seems to me that everybody was full of expectatives about this meeting, and as it turned out to be, it was nothing really special, they really didnīt click, it was all in a hurry, and as much as the fab are being political correct (I mean they love Elvis no matter what, even Elvis himself), they were in fact disapointed about the meeting, and for Elvis, well half intimidated as now he was dead long life the Beatles thing, half well they werenīt really the kind of people to whom he would get along well.
Yet seems that everybody apart of them who was present in that meeting still want to make it look as if it was the biggest thing ever, and in doing so, myth comes along.

I think it was something special to the Beatles-that was their one big request in America to meet Elvis.
Expectations are always so high for big things like this-that the real meeting probably could never have lived up to them. They were expecting I think to meet the scruffy, greasy, rocker from 55 who was on fire and they met a man of 30 who was at this point beyond that. Everything they were doing he had done, before them. He probably did feel like he was forced into meeting them-but tried to make the best of it.
They always kept a respect for Elvis and his talent IMO- John wanted Elvis to be at his Toronto Peace Festival in 69, George wanted Elvis to be featured in "the Traveling Wilburys" in the 80s and even asked Priscilla and the estate for some recording by Elvis which could be used to build a song by the group-George later decided it was kind of morbid to try to do so.(although after Roy Orbison died they built a video from one of the recordings which showed a guitar in a rocking chair when Orbisons vocal part played so I guess he changed his mind)
If you asked any of the Beatles if they would have rather not met Elvis-I'm sure they would have said- no we're were glad we did.

I disagree RoR....I think it went as well as could be expected. The differences between a Southerner and 4 British boys were vast. It was "special" by merely having 2 such iconic entertainment figures in the same room. If they could have included Sinatra it would have been a trifecta. Where did you get your information that The Beatles were disapointed in the meeting??

Elvis playing with his new band in '69 at the Toronto Rock and Roll Festival would have been one of the coolest events in the rock world for sure!!! Do you have any more info/sources about this? I have also heard about this, but donīt know really how did happened, if true of course.
Iīm sure all four Beatles were glad to have meet him, wonder if Elvis was as there is also the rumor (although is only a rumor no sources just mouth and threads)) that Lennon tried to make contact with him several times during the 70's and Elvis always hided away from that situation, and well we all know what he spoke about them to Nixon.

I had posted two you tube links above in this thread, donīt know if you got the time to watch them already, anyhow, they were not for sure disapointed in the way they hated that meeting, sure thing, they were all glad of meeting him, most of them Lennon as you can hear on those videos Im telling you. Yet what I meant is that, even if McCartney says it was one of the greatest encounters of his live, what I meant by being disapointed is that it seems to me as KMP put it that they were expecting to meet someone else, someone that Elvis was not (the image was one thing human being is another), that is one issue to adreess, inmadurity on their side of course but it was no big chemistry on their meeting, unlike Elvis meeting Roy Hamilton or Beatles meeting Bob Dylan, so it did was these two rock music icons (the bigest of all time) meeting and chating, so, sure, it was special, but only from the "image" point of view, you know what I mean? and thatīs all those people from Beatles and Elvis gang saing oh sure! they jam! they laugh! it was magic! bull"$%, from the humang being point of view, unlike Elvis and Tom JOnes or or Sammy Davis Jr or the guys at the Millon Dollar Sessions or Lennon meeting Clapton or Elton John or whoever, there was no chemistry, no magic between Elvis and the Beatles, they did not seem to have click, and thatīs Ringo on the video telling: we couldnīt got close to him or being friends (or something of the like), Memphis Mafia and Col. Parker Sh&!"# donīt know, Ringo said it was.
So, from my point of view, which is nothing but that, seems to me that Elvis and Led Zeppelin meeting in the 70's was much more of a great rock and roll meeting than the Beatles one, as story telling implies that they did get along much better.
P.S. What did disapointed the Beatles was Elvis bashing them 5 years latter. What was going on there? how can you bash Beatles and record their music at the same time? but that goes for another thread the ELvis meets Nixon maybe?

I think the Goldman Bio about Lennon is where I read it. I also am pretty sure its mentioned in a couple other Beatle bios. I have about 20 books on the Beatles as group and as individuals.

Since this thread hasn't had a post since January 6, I will put some more thoughts and quotes here. Their has been some things said that George said and etc. Well, to get it all out. First, did the Beatles arrived in one limo or two. The true answer is two. John and Paul was with Mal Evans and Colonel Parker while in limo two had Ringo and George with Joe and Brian Epstein. Also, did they jammed or not? Well, by the E!: True Hollywood Story - Elvis The Hollywood Years Larry Gellar said "Paul saw a guitar and saked Elvis if he could play it and Elvis said sure. Paul picked up a bass which he played. John asked to play a guitar and Elvis said sure go right ahead. The two start to play a little then Elvis got on another guitar and the three started jamming together." That is pretty much what the rest of the Memphis Mafia have said over the years about the meeting as well. In several books it mentions that the Beatles did arrived in two limos. Also, there is one photo that was taken that shows two limos.

I look at it this way...either they jammed or they didn't and if they recorded it great if they didn't not going loose sleep. But I would love to have been there tahts for sure or be fly on the wall.
To me to have something this big Elvis and Beetles meet someone had slip something in to record if they did anything. But one of those will never know.
Now as for Geroge Harrison Sister I know she is manging a Beatles tribute group called "Liverpool Legends." How I know this because my Friend Irv Cass started the show Elvis Meets The Beetles.
Liverpool LEgends and Irv and my friend Dwight are doing big show at Sabre Room in Spring Hill, ILL in May you should go see it!
Love to all,

It was true, Lennon wanted Elvis their but Elvis didn't want to do it at all. There is many books that has said this.

I read somewhere that during the night some of the Beatles smoked marihuana outside, and Lennon kinda hit on Priscilla. From what I read Elvis wasn't that crazy about that meeting because of that, and the feeling that he was outdated by these young, hip world conquering artists from the UK.
It probably also has to do with the fact that Elvis didn't really create music by himself. He always relied on the material and words of others (but still managed to make many songs his own throughout the proces of recording).
If Elvis really, REALLY liked it, he would have setup another meeting somewhere along the line. Before or after this short informal meeting.

Lennon hitting on Priscilla. Kinda odd for a married man don't you think. Especially when his wife was in town at the time.
That kinda makes me think of that one lawsuit that Elvis told about on Desert Storm. "There ain't no way you catch me doing that, are you kidding me?":lmfao:

According to "Elvis: from A to Z", Elvis and Harrison meet again once in Vegas during the 70's. Is that true at all?

This rather out-of-date book is the only reference to the meeting, as far as I remember. I'd suggest it wasn't true, as there would've been more references to it elsewhere.
After all, Elvis' Vegas meetings with even the most obscure of celebrities is pretty-much documented.

This is not true because of the fact of the day that it supposely happen. Harrison supposely met Elvis in Vegas but at the time Elvis was in fact in Memphis. So that is not true at all. Only two thing that is true about Harrison, one is that he met Elvis in 1965 and two he went to all four of the MSG concerts. Only one other celebrity went to all four MSG concerts and that was Lennon and his wife Yoko.

That book is from 89, I don't think it has ever been updated.
David Stanley also co wrote a book similar to A to Z "The Elvis Encyclopedia"? Never bought it but saw it out.

A friend of mine have the D. Stanley Encyclopedia, not really a great book, but it has a few facts that I havenīt seen documented but rarely in other books. The meeting of Elvis with Eric Clapton for instanse.
