NASHVILLE - For $5, the faithful can bid on the treasures of The King.
Auctioneer Don Smith said he expects about 700 fans of the late Elvis Presley to be on hand when he starts selling about 40 items that Smith will swear once belonged to the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Smith said in an interview yesterday that he has no idea how much money will change hands.
''Here we're dealing with sentiment and emotions,'' he said. ''There's no way to tell what it will bring.'
Smith picked up most of the items from Elvis and other members of the Presley family. Some items are owned by others and have been brought to Smith for auction. He sold some Presley items at auctions in 1967 and 1968, and now is offering what remains.
The potpourri of merchandise varies in size, shape and price - from a large painting of Presley's Graceland Mansion, for which Smith once turned down $75,000, to 1 surrounded the painting, which Smith says he will sell for $4 or $5 each.
The Memphis auctioneer said the 30-by-60-inch painting will be sold at the auction regardless of what it goes for. Smith said the painting hung at the mansion for about 20 years until he purchased it two weeks before the singer's death on Aug. 16.
Another item for sale is a 1960 Lincoln limousine once owned by Presley. Smith said the car is one of only 34 and has 45,600 kilometres (31,000 miles) on the odometer.
Before the auction gets under way, Smith will open the doors of the rented hotel ballroom to let the public fondle the merchandise while listening to Christmas songs sung by Presley and piped through a public address system.
Smith said he decided to conduct the auction here rather than in Memphis - where Presley lived - out of respect for Vernon Presley, Elvis' father.
Smith said he will charge $5 for a catalogue of items on sale, which will double as an admission ticket to the auction.
''We've got to control the crowd and this is a good way to do it,'' he said.
Among items listed in a newspaper advertisement are two bedside tables with light dimmer switches built into the top drawers, a solid cherry game table with four red velvet chairs, a red oval rug, wrought iron arm chairs with cushions, gold room dividers and a few books from Elvis' library.
