My pc is very slow at times and even freezes when I go to open links...
I have done a disk cleanup, defragmented files and I have lots of space on my C drive, so what else can I try? :hmm:
Maybe, I have too many Elvis pics..
Does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks,
franny

My pc does the same thing sometimes! It comes from adwares on mine, dunno if it's the same for you, but you could try: do ctrl+alt+sup, to see the task list, and look for programs that uses a lot of memory (more than 15000 Ko), if you don't really need these programs, close them. And check out the whole list of program, if there are programs you don't know, run a search online to make sure they are not viruses or adwares or stuff like that... There is also a folder with temporary internet files (you can access it via your internet browser I think), if this folder takes too much size you can empty it...the freezing could come from damaged internet files.
If you still have problems, you can always scan your computer: download this program: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, run it, it will give you a report. Copy and paste this report here: http://www.hijackthis.de/en and it will tell you which files have problems, you can delete these files, or re-install the damaged programs,...
Hope this helped a bit :)

Sorry..."sup" is the suppression key on your keyboard, maybe it is has another name where you live :P
"del" would be the name on an american keyboard. Anyway, it's the key to delete or cancel things

Hi Franny.
You could use a programme that gets rid of all the adware and stuff that gets on yr pc,without you even knowing,You will be surprised just how many you get in the course of a week...and it re-stes the directory at the same time.I have a good one that i bought.if you would like a copy of it.I can send it to you via e mail.just let me know

Hi malc,
Thanks, so much! :) I'm frustrated with my pc right now!
Also, I don't know if you or anyone has ever had this, but for example right now I'm on TCB, but at the top of my screen it says Google  It's very weird!
thanks,
franny :)

Maybe you have the Google toolbar installed on your computer? If you want to remove it, you can choose to uninstall it in the list of the programs (something like "add and delete programs")
Have you scanned your computer yet?

I have three partitions
C:\ Windows and all installed programs
D:\ my documents and all files
E:\ swap (temporary memory and temporary internet files)
All music and videos are on my server, so that I can access them anywhere in my house.
The advantage is that this way the pc doesn't get fragmented.
Every few weeks I run
* JKdefrag (link (http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/)), an ugly but very simple, free, fast and straightforward defrag program.
* SpyBot (link (http://www.spybot.info/en/)) a free anti-spyware program (that's less bloated than for example AdAware).
* CCleaner (link (http://www.ccleaner.com/)) to remove temporary files that aren't deleted by the original programs.
* CCleaner (again) to clean to registry so that all links to files and programs that aren't on your pc anymore, are deleted from registry
Running on the background is AVG antivirus (link (http://www.download.com/3000-2239_4-10761481.html)), a free and really recommended program.
These programs prevent my pc to become slower and slower (and an easy target for spyware and virus).

music and video on a central server in the house ..... great minds think alike .
we have done so since 4 years and only recently i discovered there are a few more followers of this solution (which i can only highly recommend to all users!), especially since alone my elvis-files are in the several terabytes  range the meantime.
i remember very well to be laughed and mocked at when having mentioned that solution 2 years ago (OK, was in german forums) but with their amounts of data growing, more and more users start having a closer look at this solution.
in addition to albert's posting i would like to recommend as backup a RAID-system as the best and most convenient solution around, IMHO. costs a few euros / $$ in the beginning and takes some effort to set it up, but it's absolutely worth it.
plus apart from albert's strict dividing partitions for the OS, for data and for temp-stuff (the latter i confess is on my C-partition), i have ONE HDD hosting the OS & installed programs / C-drive only, the SECOND HDD hosts D = data, E = pictures only  and G = temporary music / temporary videos (stuff not yet ready to be filed but kinda work-in-progress) and H = softwaredownloads (so one always quickly has the original program handy when needed).
so far my 2 pennies .... strict separation in any way is rather helpful and makes disk-defragmentation / disk-cleanup of the C-drive very simple.
hugs, ellie
PS for franny: did you COMPLETELY de-install google and all the components that come along with it?
if you chose 'standard installation' it brings with it (or at least: brought with it) a load of unwanted stuff.
do you have installed 'google-earth'? that once almost managed to bring a stand-still to one of my PCs and i decided to abandon it.
other thing: check your 'startup menue' and minimize the number of programs launched when booting to the NECESSARY stuff and nothing more. anything running in the background - even when idle - only keeps your CPU busy and slows it down.
