Okay, here's something that I've thought a lot about over the years. What are some of the things you've read or heard about Elvis that were later proven to be myths?
I've made a list below.
Now remember ... if you don't like this thread, don't post on it.
1. Elvis once shot his mother;
2. Elvis never, ever took drugs (and he needed all of what he took!);
3. Elvis' body weight was all water-retention;
4. Elvis was reading a book about Jesus when he died;
5. Elvis stayed completely faithful during his marriage, while Cilla was the one to sleep around;
6. Elvis once said that all black people were good for was to shine his shoes;
Any others?

That he choreographed the title dance scene in Jailhouse Rock (it was based on his stage moves, but JR had a choreographer).
That he had bone cancer.
That he stole Hound Dog from its writer, Big Mama Thornton (this one was extremely popular for a few years).
And this seems to be a good thread to mention this one: that he had an affair with June Carter before she married Johnny Cash. Carter Cash's son mentions this in his book on his mother (which is fascinating reading for anyone who thinks there was a shred of truth in the movie Walk the Line, by the way). And I've seen an interview with June Carter in which she claimed that Elvis had a massive crush on her.
This one was new to me - I thought Anita Carter was the one that interested Elvis. Does anyone know if there's any truth in it?

Well, it wasn't an affair in the sense that anyone was cheating on anyone else; but June and Elvis had a bit of a thing going, before Johnny was on the scene.
In the 70s, Johnny burned Elvis' love letters to her in a fit of jealousy.

I knew about burning the letters. Although that one didn't make it into Johnny's autobiography, LOL.
I guess I don't see the timing with Elvis and June. I thought she would be pregnant with her daughters a lot of the time when she first knew him.

It wasn't all water-retention, but you can see the puffiness in his hands and face at times which seemed to disappear a few concerts later-that is a sign of some water-retention.

To answer Getlo's post of myths:
l. He never shot his mother
2. He took more drugs than was prescribed and was addicted
3. He gained weight and at times had water retention on top of it
4. Don't know what book he was reading when he died
5. I think he tried to be faithful the first part of his marriage but don't think it lasted
6. He had no prejudice against blacks and doubt very much if he said what was stated
My question:
Did he really like the Colonel or was he intimidated by him?

Nope, I don't believe he shot his mother.{never heard that one}
2. Elvis never, ever took drugs (and he needed all of what he took!);
Think Elvis and friends tried some a time or two.
He needed some of what he took.Doctor prescribed more ,possibly. ?
3. Elvis' body weight was all water-retention;
Much of his weight/puffiness was water retention.
4. Elvis was reading a book about Jesus when he died;
Two different books was said that he was reading. One of them was about Jesus. Don't really care .
5. Elvis stayed completely faithful during his marriage, while Cilla was the one to sleep around;
According to Cilla; he was .Good enough for me.
6. Elvis once said that all black people were good for was to shine his shoes;
That's already been proven wrong.

Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison are alive
Myths:
Elvis didn’t die in 1977 but used that as a cover to go into seclusion and get out of the public spotlight. Jim Morrison is alive and someone else’s body is in his grave.
Facts:
In spite of extensive and largely irrefutable evidence to the contrary, there are still those who believe that Elvis is alive and is periodically spotted in convenience stores, restaurants and trailer parks all over the world.
Some people still don’t believe that Morrison’s body is the one buried in his grave in a Paris cemetery. The official cause of Morrison’s was listed as a heart attack -- believed by many to have been drug related -- in 1971. One enterprising gentleman has even produced a video (for $24.95 plus shipping) that he claims is Morrison living the life of a cowboy in the Pacific Northwest. People who have seen the video say the man in it bears no resemblance whatsoever to Morrison, and other than the fact that many of his song lyrics had mystical themes, there is no evidence to suggest that his death was faked.

What's the MM's drug taking got to do with anything? The thread is about Elvis myths.
4. Elvis was reading a book about Jesus when he died;

And if Cilla had said the opposite, you'd be skewering her. And what if the MM - along with their "awful" stories - had said that he was actually faithful? Would you then pick'n'choose which parts of their stories to believe?

Never heard about June C. and Elvis, Johnny was jealous of Elvis? THat's kinda romantic that he burned her old love letters. Why did she keep them? boy that would've made a great c&w song!
In John Carter Cash's book, he says June sometimes would reminisce about Elvis and wonder what it would have been like if she'd wound up with him. But that may have been her way of tweaking Johnny Cash, who apparently never found it very very easy to be true, to June or to his first wife. June said she told Johnny when he got rid of Elvis' letters that he shouldn't have done that - they were worth a lot of money (she was joking).
More on topic, here are a few myths out there now thanks to Walk the Line: that Elvis got Johnny Cash hooked on drugs, and that Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison all toured together on the same bill throughout the South in their Sun days.

Gladly.
THE DEATH OF ELVIS by Thompson & Cole; one of many sources. Elvis was actually reading a magazine called Sex and Psychic Energy. According to Dan Warlick (Shelby County Medical Examiner in 1977), "It was sorta' like a IF HER PISCES IS IN THIS POSITION, THEN YOUR CAPRICORN SHOULD BE HERE type of publication...very hardcore by 1977 standards."
It certainly wasn't porn; I really don't know why they bothered switching it with a book on the Shroud of Turin.
It is also referenced in Guralnick's Careless Love, among others.
Personally, I'd rather trust these two references than other sources.

btw, what a sense of humor June had! Elvis' letters certainly would've been worth a lot of money!:lmfao:

IF anyone is depending on Dan Warlick for the truth;
Remember ;" Dan Warlick, a Shelby County medical examiner, returned to Graceland after the body had been removed. It was customary to photograph death scenes for future reference and Dan took several photographs for his files. The bathroom had been cleaned "
Warlick and Francisco both said there were never any pictures taken.
{even at the autopsy} Yet when this trial finally got to court in 1980 , there were pictures presented ,according to Thompson and Cole .
There was no Shroud of Tourin as it hadn't been written yet.
There was ; "A Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus"
Which even members of the MM claimed Geller got for him to read .
It just proves no one has the complete truth yet and probably never will.

This book was about the Shroud of Turin ... I can only presume from the comment above that you've not read it? I have. And it's about the Shroud of Turin.
From the Las Vegas Sun: "One is the rare 'A Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus', an examination of the Shroud of Turin, a book that was published just once, in 1972."
And from Careless Love: "Larry took great care to place The Scientific Search for the Faces of Jesus, an inquiry into the mystery of the Shroud of Turin, at the top of the pile".
And one can search the Net for details about that book's contents.
IF anyone is depending on Dan Warlick for the truth;
Again, from Careless Love (on Warlick's examination of the death scene): "The only thing that appeared to have been missed ... was the book that Elvis had in the bathroom with him when he died, a study of sex and psychic energy that correlated sexual positions with astrological signs".

Check this out, look under Frank O Adams who wrote the scientific search for the face of Jesus and then check when it was published beside his name....1972 and Elvis died in 77 right? That's FIVE years prior to Elvis's death that the book was published.

Back to the topic of Elvis myths ...
The story of Elvis seeing a dead body as a kid (which led to his insomnia later on in life).
Anyone have any thoughts on this; is it true, do you think?
Sonny
12-06-2007, 12:08 PM
In Elvis' case I do not believe that is true entirely.
Elvis' insomnia in later years might have been caused by the unusual lifestyle, in combinations with meds.
Sometimes people get affected by things like that, but my bet is that often happens when that person is in a depression. That might bring back bad thoughts from the past or even depressing future views.

This is an excellent topic, especially with there being so many myths about Elvis, a lot have have been addressed so far. I think the biggest myth that has been exaggerated for the most part, was his weight near the end of his life. Granted, there were many unflattering pics of Elvis his last couple of years, but there were some awesome ones also, even well into 1977, Charlotte Feb 19th or 21st comes to mind. Also, I thought he looked quite well meeting Todd Morgan, June 26th/77, at the Indy airport, though obviously not rake thin, he wasn't grossly overweight either. Take a look at this video, and let me know what you think. The first bit is from June 26th/77, the rest 1976.

Here's another (more recent) myth. I warn you, it's not for the faint hearted. It's from Topix (again) ... the poster Lee, who does not have the courage to show her face here. Nor does Becky, who believes she gets picked on for her opinions and that a certain part of my body doesn't stink!
And it's a big hello to ol' Maurice, who had the hide to criticise me for looking at Topix every day (which I don't); yet, he comes here almost every day to check on what we say. Will you people ever show yourselves?
And TCB World is growing in members each day too, Maurice..
Anyway, here's Lee's rather hilarious (and more than a little paranoid) myth. She is referring to us, and the people over on FECC.
"About 50% of the people on these boards who call themselves Elvis fans are not Elvis fans at all but members of the MM, people from Priscilla's family who want Elvis' reputation to stay dirty so Priscilla can continue to play the injured little bird, and people who were jealous of Elvis when he was alive and hate him. They are "inside out" Elvis fans, truly PHONY Elvis fans. I don't think they are misguided fans, or uniformed fans, or shortsighted fans, they are people who say they are fans but they KNOW that they are not Elvis fans at all. They are out and out phonies posing as Elvis fans"

I think the biggest myth that has been exaggerated for the most part, was his weight near the end of his life.
I read somewhere that he weighed 350 lbs when he died. Which I really can't believe - that would have been TWICE his normal weight. I just don't see where he ever looked twice the size he was for most of his life. 225-250 lbs sounds a lot more realistic to me (which would be very heavy for someone with Elvis' body type).

Another myth ...
The story of Elvis' "lost" Harley Davidson motorbike.
http://www.snopes.com/autos/dream/elvis.asp
There's another version of the story about how the bike had a note with it: "To Elvis, from James Dean", which is even more ridiculous.

I agree Alissia with your estimate of Elvis' weight at the end of his life. I never heard he weighed around 350 but that is way out of line.

350lbs is more like Lamar than Elvis.
Elvis was at his heaviest in February 1977, when I suppose he was nudging the 290 mark?
As discussed before, Elvis did fall into the category of obese, as any male weight chart will tell you.
But 350? Naaah.

I have read that also. It's either in the Goldman book or it's in "Down at the End of Lonely Street". Can't remember which, but I remember thinking at the time that there was no way he weighed 350. With his frame he would have looked like a circus act at 350......(n)

The story of Elvis seeing a dead body as a kid (which led to his insomnia later on in life).
Anyone have any thoughts on this; is it true, do you think?
Didn't Elvis always have insominia? I thought it was because he was worried about sleepwalking...:hmm:

Apparently, the sleepwalking happened a few times in childhood, but there are no reports of it happening in his adult life as far as I'm aware.
As a fellow insomniac myself, I can sympathise. I can count the times I've had a full, uninterrupted 8 hour night sleep on one hand ... and I'm 40. I mean that literally too ... I've had maybe four nights of full sleep in my entire life.
Like the man himself, "I average about four or five hours a night I guess ..."
And in case you're wondering (;)), the longest I was ever awake and simply could not sleep was 78 hours. No, that's not a typo ... 78 hours straight in late 2004.
Good times ... !

78 hours!
How long did you sleep for when you eventually did?
As I remember, it was about 8 or 10 hours ... of interrupted sleep of course. Still no more than five or so uninterrupted.
The big spells set in once every few weeks, and the average awake time is about 30 hours or so. That one from 2004 was the worst I ever had (I'd just changed to a night shift job, so maybe that was the cause).
And for the rest of the time: about five hours' sleep spread over the usual 8 or 9 hours timeframe each night.
But I'm used to it ... I guess. But I've never known anything different, so ...

I have also had trouble over my 52 years sleeping-mainly from worry.
I learned to worry at about 5 and it became a bad habit. So I can beat that 78 hours Getlo-I went 2 full weeks without sleep in 1991.
I had a medical problem and at that time had no medical insurance (a factory I worked for had just closed and I was out of work after 16 years) I had 3 small kids and got sick --throwing up blood etc... I was sure I had cancer. I could not sleep and nothing I tried helped. Finally I just collapsed.
Ended up at a hospital and had a nice 4 day stay. It was not cancer-it was worry and nerves. But it was the worst 2 weeks I have ever had.

Okay, here's something that I've thought a lot about over the years. What are some of the things you've read or heard about Elvis that were later proven to be myths?
I've made a list below.
Now remember ... if you don't like this thread, don't post on it.
1. Elvis once shot his mother;
2. Elvis never, ever took drugs (and he needed all of what he took!);
3. Elvis' body weight was all water-retention;
4. Elvis was reading a book about Jesus when he died;
5. Elvis stayed completely faithful during his marriage, while Cilla was the one to sleep around;
6. Elvis once said that all black people were good for was to shine his shoes;
Any others?
Brilliant idea for a thread, so lets have em all and for once. Here is another myth:
That Ginger Alden was the last person to see Elvis alive. She wasnt. The last person to see him alive was aut Delta who brought him the last package of prescribed drugs upstairs at the backentrance of the bathroom.

There are different versions on the time of delivering of the third package, but its reported in the book Death Of Elvis, What Heally happened, that apparently Aunt Delta delivered it about 8.30. I think I'm gonna do a timeline on august 16...
