Elvis - The 30th Anniversary Blues
By Mark O'Neill, Nov 7, 2007
So the 30th Anniversary has been and gone and despite all the BMG promises, it was a bit of a let down. In fact it was an embarrassing bore. What inspirational release did we have? Why a CD album of greatest hits called "The King" with all the same songs as "30 No.!s", "2nd to None", "Elvis By The Presleys" "Hitstory" and "Love, Elvis". So maybe the much promised remix album would come out? The signs were there when the fantastic remix of Burning Love from last year never saw the light of day. In other words - nothing. There would be no ALLC like there was in 2002. Ok so maybe a duets album, after all we had the sublime Celine Dion/ Elvis appearance on American Idol this year. Nope. That never got released at all. Another missed chance. Instead we got a poor, hastily recorded duet with Lisa and an embarrassing. clichéd video to boot. What a let down. Even though it was No.1 download it never made the charts!! Someone explain that to me.
Ok maybe the unreleased material from Elvis On Tour would be released?? Nope nothing to report there. Ok Elvis in Concert - CBS Special? Amazingly no not a sign. Instead we get the, 18 songs that never made No.1 one but they might this time cause the suckers will buy the singles like they did two years ago release! What a cringe worthy thing to foist upon loyal fans. Elvis can't even break the top 10 because non-Elvis fans aren't interested in downloading it. Just wait until the Beatles songs are available to download - they'll be at no.1 for 6 months!
A totally missed opportunity for originality to mark the King's passing appropriately. To BMG I say this: no more releases of this boring nature! It was better in the Colonel's day.
All I can say to RCA and EPE for not releasing something worthwhile is(n)(n)(n)

RCA/EPE really knows how to re release the same ol hit's and almost hits..whatever, They must just be following the spirit of The Colonel. Just repackage the same hits and the same mixed versions. I know that they could a lot more with the original/master recordings when it comes to sound quality but they are just waiting for an extreamly dry spell in sales to do that. I remember thinkng when i was I was kid, I want to buy this cause I like the cover. I already have these songs. I will not buy any thing that I already have, not unless I see it in the used section for really cheap. That way they don't get the credit as it selling.

I've stopped purchasing the old same repackaged songs....I won't buy another cd or boxed set until they give us something new.
Jorgenson (sp?) said that they have enough "new" stuff to keep putting out Elvis music to the next millinium. I think they repackage because they know fans will buy and it will fill their coffers and they wont' release the new stuff til the demand drops for Elvis music. I'm seriously starting to think I won't hear anything "new" in my lifetime and I think that is a shame, a shame on RCA and EPE.

I know I was waiting for that Burning Love Remix to be released. I thought it was gonna be put on that CD called, "The Essential Elvis Presley". I was so eager for it to come out because Mowo(The person who remixed Burning Love) said that the record company was planning on releasing the song. When the CD did come out I looked at the track list and didn't see it on there. I put that CD back on the shelf because ALL of those songs I already have. Maybe someone should write BMG/RCA and EPE and bless them out about it. I know that they want to reach a new generation but the people who are already fans shouldn't have to suffer. They can slip an advertisement in the sleeve that shows the past Elvis CDs they had put out already. I seen plenty of other record companies do it. You open a CD case up and a slip of paper falls out. I bet it's cheaper than re-releasing the same 30 songs every year.

There are 200 soundboard recordings out there...and I think on at least one of them must be a great set list with rare songs...why wouldn't they release this???I think the fans would appreciate it alot more and you just got something new...not the same old stuff we already know.

Does anyone remember a chat with some member of the staff at Warner Bros? They said that we were going to get very, very excited with their releases. Ok, now for the million dollar question - who's very, very excited about their releases??
I'm in Europe and I can't buy the bl**dy thing unless in a pack with 11 movies, some of whom I have! Now if they would have released them individually then I would be "excited" but would have been "very, very excited" if E-O-T (yepp, you guessed it) would be released.
So it isn't exclusively BMG that have their trousers around their ankles

LOL I agree!
I was waiting anxiously for Warner Bros. and then when I saw the boxed sets I was like "WHAT?" just repeats, things that we have.
The ONLY thing I got excited about was the DVD release of "This Is Elvis" and only because my VHS was getting old.

I think they put all their energy into crap tie-ins like the American Idol thing; the Sports Illustrated shoot (which, actually was bloody fantastic!) and that utterly embarrassing sanctioned impersonator contest.
Now that EPE is linked with the Great Satan (better known as Bob Sillerman), they seemed to forget to supervise some great releases this year.
It was certainly the biggest anniversary for years, what with visitors to Memphis, media coverage and so forth.
But EPE and Sony/BMG blew it big time. This year sucked as far as released content was concerned.
As long as this unholy alliance with Sillerman continues, expect more of the same.
And before you know who gets on here touting his/her favourite "genius" Sillerman, EPE and Sony/BMG are equally as responsible for releases and good ideas. But people at both places are asleep at the wheel.

Since I became a fan this year, I don't consider this 30th anniversary as a loosy one...but I understand the older fans are disapointed.
Next year we will have the 40th anniversary of the 68 comeback special, anybody know if they're planning on something at EPE?
There just isnt a whole lot left to do after 30 years.EPE doesnt really have anything but the CBS footage which most fans have already seen. They dont own the movie outtakes or music. There are no surprises left in the music vaults either. The only big item left in my mind is the movie outtakes which may never be released.Only hardcore fans would care about them.I dont know what they will be able to market from this point. What's left after the 30th?What are they going to promote?Maybe a remix could get noticed but that's iffy at best.

The sky is falling.
At least there are some fairly interesting FTD's. For the mainstreem label, there may just not be much left to do and as long as people keep buying the same old stuff every year, they are going to keep repackaging it every year.
EOT, This is Elvis and EIC are about all we can hope for as far as WE all know. Hopefully soon.

The horrible news abut Garth Brooks' country a$$ outsellin Elvis now may wake up RCA and open some folks eyes.
They were gonna release a remix album this year for the 30th, and EPE screwed that all up by puttin together that tacky ETA contest.
The Burnin Love remix was AWSOME!! I can't believe they screwed that up as well.
But if they wanna fix the problem with Brooks outsellin Elvis, then they're gonna have to be creative and market him a lot better than they do. Or Brooks won't be the only passin him up.
I do think this is a wake up call and that EPE and Silerman will put the money out to get the record company to do more remixes.
If I Can Dream and In The Ghetto both went #1 on Itunes. If that aint any indication of what folks want, which are new remixes with new sounds, then what is?
That's the only way Elvis is ever gonna sell continuously to my age group of teenagers and early 20's. It's too obvious.
Off topic a little bit but....I do wanna see Elvis' movies in HD form sooner than later.

I do agree, I hope this is a wake-up call and that they start using their heads soon and start to market some good CDs and DVDs instead of tacky merchandise. They could put out some very spectacular TV shows too if they put their mind to it.
They seem to have the same mentality that the Colonel did, don't fix what ain't broke which resulted in Elvis' boredom with the movies etc. If the Colonel had had his way, Elvis would have been singing Hound Dog, All Shook Up forever. Thank god for Steve Binder at the '68 Special.
Elvis may be the best but he has some stiff competition not being alive to put out new albums.

Getlo, once again, I couldn't agree more on ALL you've said (except the Sports Illustrated as I am female and that doesn't float my boat, but I did like the pics of Graceland) LOL
