View Full Version : Being a young Elvis fan

Hi gang !

I was thinking, how hard it is being a young Elvis fan. You see we get criticised for liking him, which is horrible ! And i feel that older Elvis fans look down on us. Not on here, but on other places.

And i think, being a young Elvis fan, it's hard to have an opinion and stick up for it. People think we know nothing. Ok, we don't know as much as the older Elvis fans do, but we do have opinions.

Does anyone else agree ??

Danielle, I think it's wonderful there are so many younger Elvis fans. We welcome your opinions on all discussions. And lord knows none of us are an expert, some have read more books than others but none of us know anything 100%.

Thank you Kelly. Appreciate it.

You see, i have an opinion on someone in the Elvis world. Or i did. And it has changed in the past year, but someone e-mailed me trying to change my opinion, because i am young. And i feel like, well when, and if, it changes, i'll tell you. Let me get on with it.

As an old Elvis fan , I welcome your opinions. Just because we're older doesn't mean we know a thing. We've read and studied; but I get shown something different everyday. Fresh younger eyes might catch something we've missed .As we get older. {unfortunately,} too many are "set in their old beliefs" and refuse to look at anything with an open mind.
So, throw out your opinions; I'm happy to see them to consider .(y)

It is not hard being a young Elvis fan because I tell my friends that I dont like their rap music and they understand. But when I am driving my car I get funny looks from people because I am playing my Elvis CD's loud. Sometimes I get in arguements with people that say Elvis was nothing and rap is the best and rappers are trend setters. I then tell them that Elvis was the first to have Cadillacs, wear all the bling and wear the aviators. Kanye West dont have nothing on Elvis. I explain to them that Elvis has sold over 1 Billion albums and has had 30 Number One Hits and how more people watched him in the Aloha from Hawaii concert than Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. Then they get this look on their faces :jawdrop: I then tell them lets see if they are talking about Jay Z 30 years after he's dead. Elvis is the King and will always be the King.

How can it be so hard to be a young Elvis fan in the UK when Elvis is so popular there now? Not trying to cause trouble but I suppose young people are making his music popular.

Burning_Love
11-06-2007, 01:42 PM
I don't Know. Just is ! It's actually not that popular where i am. And people are constantly taking the mick.

But the topic was about this e-mail i got, people trying to change my opinions about Elvis, just because they are older.

But i know a lot. I too have read books. But as Kelly put it, not everyone is 100%. They don't the truth either.

Danielle, you just stick to your opinions and like what you like, everyone should do that and it`s okay as long as we`re not trying to put anyone down for liking something else.
I really think it`s great, that there are so many young fans around....JUST KEEP ON ROCKING:clap:

And just to let you know....I`m ONLY 45...he,he and became a fan just 4 years ago...so I`m kind of a young fan too.......

This deserves a little time meant for my studying lol...muahahaha :D

Well, I have learned with time not to talk about Elvis much at school. For a very simple reason. I don't want to be bothered with bad comments and I choose if it's right or not to tell someone that I like Elvis, or that he is my favorite.
I wouldn't be able to change someone's opinion who is so "SURE" Elvis died from heroin...I just can't. These are hopeless lol. There is no way (even if i bring written prove!) to prove him/her that he or her is SO wrong.
Some say that "he's ok", some say "OMG, that is old!" lol :lmfao:
They know that they can't change me :D and I'm not someone who will have a fight over different tastes. But, I am sure about one thing : You can't discuss about different tastes, but we can discuss about quality and it's proven!

Aaaaaaah, I haven't met an older fan yet lol. Except here of course....OLDER fans here are great!:clap::clap::hug:
I learn a lot from them and I am not (anymore!) afraid to post my opinion because i am sure no one will look down at it :D

Thanks for putting this thread up Danielle

I don't have a hard time, and I don't feel they don't appreciate my opinion, but sometimes it's hard for me when I'm with boys of my age to tell that I'm an Elvis fan, they all like rap and pop...I also like that music, but I prefer Elvis much more, and some of my friends know that and don't make fun of me...that's really great.

Elvis certainly wasn't considered cool when i was at school (late 70's early 80's) so i do understand some of what you're going through.

I may be just simplifying things here but my experience of school is that anything you like outside of the what the "cool kids like" is going to get laughed at and picked on. Not much help but if you look at it that way it kind of helps, it helped me when i was at school to see it that way.

For your own sanity it's probably not worth trying to change others minds about Elvis, they'll believe what they want sometimes in spite of facts, frustrating though it is. have you thought about the fact they do it just to annoy you?

As for older Elvis fans we were all once young Elvis fans. I know i don't know everything about Elvis, so I'm always open and interested in what others think about him or know about him. Most of us are just wanting to celebrate him though, just like you

I am a young Elvis fan and I too get weird looks when I'm blasting Elvis music in the car. I'll always remember my first day of high school when I heard someone go, oh my god! why is she hanging up a picture of Elvis in her locker! Even though some people my age think its weird, a lot of people think its really cool. I got a lot of compliments on my dorm room because of the pictures of Elvis I have hanging up. I've found that a lot of "older" fans are happy that there are young fans. When I was at Elvis Week this August a lot of the older fans came up to me and said how glad they were to see younger people who loved Elvis.

I am 44 and been an Elvis fan since 1976, I guess I am now an older fan:) I remember that back in the early 80's being an Elvis fan was like being retarded, it was something you did not say at school because other kids would make fun of you! But let me tell you that in 2007 people in my work environment all know that I love Elvis and NOBODY laugh at me, they all think he was great and they like talking to me about him because I know so much more than they do! Further a lot of them have asked me to burn them some songs! Now, I find it great to be an Elvis fan!!! By the way I live in Canada. If people would all have the same taste we would wear the same clothes, drive the same car, have the same girlfriend:) What kind of world this would be...Don't worry about other people's thoughts just enjoy your own taste of music & BE HAPPY!!

the only people who bug me about liking elvis are other teens and all nine of my siblings, who are all older than me, infact most of them were born while elvis was stilling living except three. All the adults i know thinks its just a "noraml megan thing" anyways, i have never really liked the same things as kids my age. "Older" people enjoy the fact that i like elvis, once i was in a store and i found this wallet w/ elvis on it. and i ran to my mom and i begged her to buy it, i was jumping up and down and running and being all weird like usual but the whole time a group of older women were watching me and giggling, when i walked by them to leave i got a few (good) comments on liking elvis and big smiles. honestly i don't care what people think, i'd choose elvis music over food any day. =D

You get a lot of critics, but the best part is that you keep Elvis' music in your heart... Anything else matters if you feel good with yourself.

Danielle,

In Memphis in August at the Elvis Insiders concert an absolute highlight was when the host (on both days) interupted proceedings to ask "Stand up any fans who are younger than 30?" about a third of the audience stood up and got a rousing round of applause. As an "old-er-ish" (36) fan I'm delighted he is captivating a next generation.

I got into Elvis when I was 15/16, had my school folder covered in Elvis pics and even had a little Elvis emblem on all my books and school bag - I got some stick for it because I wasn't a fan of Bros, Europe, Erasure, etc. etc. but where are they now? Turns out I was right all along! :D

As for people trying to change your mind concerning Elvis, just keep learning and enjoying and making your own conclusions. Even the world's most lauded Elvis experts, like Peter Guralnick, get it wrong at times and with Elvis its best to just make up your own mind. As St Paul wrote to Timothy:
"Let no one disregard you because you are young" :P

I think it's great to be an Elvis fan whatever age you are, although I do agree that sometimes emotions can run wild when discussing the topic of Elvis

Opinions are like noses, everyone has one, but nobody should be sending e-mails or private messages to try to persuade you to think their way :supriced:

As a 38 year old fan I still remember the thrill to discovering certain songs, films & pictures.. My mind is still not 100% agreed on Elvis as an artist or human being because over the years things change that give a different perspective or angle on something that you always thought you knew.

So....... be who you want to be, learn, make mistakes but most of all ENJOY!

more people watched him in the Aloha from Hawaii concert than Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.

This is off topic, I realise, but that statement is not true. One of the many myths perpetuated in the Elvis world.

As for being a younger fan, here's a philosophy that has served me well for many years:

Never ... ever ... give a crap what anyone thinks about you or your taste in music. Ever.

(Or any other aspect of your life for that matter. Just be true to yourself).

Let other people make their snide comments, and don't give it a second thought.

Well I guess I'm one of the young fans too:P
I think, as Marija has already said in a previous post, for younger fans it's sometimes easier not to tell others about Elvis. I don't tell anyone at school or ppl at my age that I'm an Elvis fan ( which doesn't mean i'm not proud of being an Elvis fan, cause I am VERY proud of it), but I just don't think they need to know, the music they like is not my cup of tea and I don't think they would understand...
I know they would say things about him that would make me kinda sad and that's why I keep it as a secret.;)
My opinion is, it's great to have Elvis fans of all ages here...the young can learn something from the older fans and I think it would be much more boring with only young fans or only old fans...;) I think that, if you really are an Elvis fan you can get along well with any other Elvis fan, because it's ONE person that we adore and we're all here because of the same reason...to keep Elvis' memory alive!(y)

That's a nice thread! I'm a young fan too in case anyone didn't know it...I agree with Danielle, except I don't have the feeling that older fans don't respect the younger ones. Actually, at school, the teachers are happy to see there is at least one kid who knows about Elvis when he is mentionned :D
But the other kids of my age tend to find that pretty funny...I guess ignoring is the best way to go. I just wanted to say I was glad I found people online who are my age and who love Elvis, as well as older fans ready to welcome a new generation

First of all welcome. It's great to see young elvis-fans and trust me: we older fans get lots of critisizem too. Lol. Most people think we're hmmm....something. Lol. I learned one important lesson (rather late): use your intuition and follow your heart, but never let other people take away your own opinion. Everybody's entiteld to have an opinion. (Weather it's the right one or not.) However it's not bad to listen to others and share idea's. The more you listen and share info, the more you learn and you'll know if your opinion is made by the right reasons. Just always keep in mind that everyone has an opinion that hasn't have to be the same as yours. Don't let your idea's and opinions let get mixed up because of that. Like I always did. (Except when it came to Elvis. I sticked to him, and still do, like glue.) I always let me guide by opinions og others. Believe me that is sooo wrong.
As for people who think they know everything:One man alone can't know everything (maybe much), but together we can learn more by sharing thoughts and we can be stronger and wiser. Afterall, life is like a school. You'll learn new things every day. Even when you're older. Some things are sad and you wanna forget them as soon as possible others are nice, but you can even learn from the bad things in life.
Boy, I realize I'm sounding like dr. Phill. Lol. But I mean every word of what I wrote.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay and have lots of fun with Elvis. He's worth it.

I LOVE the young fans... (I am an oldie). No, the young fans did not get to see Elvis in person...or experience the excitement of Elvis as it was "happening".... as many of us lucky older fans did....but I feel the younger fans must have a very very special and unique love for Elvis....for loving him after he had already gone from us. (((Elvis))) So, I say KUDOS to the younger (y)ones and I hope they keep coming to join us! :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy

BTW...I ADORED ELVIS in junior high and high school....in the sixties (like KPM)....and all my friends were Beatles fans and thought I was a real odd ball...I never regreted not giving up on Elvis....and just following my own drummer....I mean ....singer. :D ;)

I’m a young fan too, I’m 18 years old.

I have been an Elvis fan since I was really little. My parents have videos of me dancing to his music when I was a little kid. LOL

The music today is TERRIBLE! (n)

Rap, crap, hard rock, hip hop, bip bop, it’s all BAD!!! LOL

I get made fun of for liking Elvis, but you know what I don’t care.

Those people don’t matter, and it’s there loss for not liking Elvis. They don’t know what they’re missing.

Elvis Presley is The King, and will always be THE KING!

And I will do my part to let everybody know how great, and wonderful he was.

Also, if I have kids, I will make sure that they love Elvis too.

Merry Christmas Everybody!!! :newyear:

I understand how you were made to feel Carole. At least The Beatles were the "real deal". In the early 70's my friends thought I was nuts for loving Elvis.....believe it or not, they thought he was sooo old.;) All of my friends went ape over Donny Osmond, Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy(remember "The Partridge Family?). I'm betting that alot of posters here have never heard of the latter two....they know Donny Osmond because his sister was just on "Dancing With the Stars.":lol::lol:

Do what I did with all of my friends. Explain the story of Elvis and how he paved the way for the artist of today, and speak about all of his records they will go like this :jawdrop:. I must have explained the influence/ life of Elvis more than 200 times. Then they realize what an impact Elvis had, and they will do a research of their own, hell you might even make them become Elvis fans.

I can call myself an young fan too...and I'm a quite newest fan (I discovered Elvis in April 2007)...before Elvis I listened to today's rock and pop music. And since I discovered Elvis...I have begun to listen to more Oldies and found lots of great artists and bands from the golden 50s and 60s.(and now I can say..that mostly today's music..is ..crap (n) I have totally fed up with it..).. It has been really hard for me to tell my friends and workmates that I have become an Elvis fan.. and well..only one really good friend of mine knows. But otherwise I haven't dared to tell.. At work I have said to people that I have begun to listen more oldies... "like Elvis, The beatles, Johnny Cash..etc.."..but didn't dare to say that Elvis is the number one  .
I am a bit sad that I noticed his music a quite late...but I have a memory that I have listened to Elvis first time 10 years ago...but only some songs. Then I was a huge fan of one band (better I don't say which) and there was no place for any other artists and bands. And I was a stupid kid then that I thought that children cannot listen to the golden oldies. LOL.

I have to say the Elvis fans are my only real friends...because we share the same interest and it is easy to speak with it. I don't even have many IRL friends..they have their own things to do and I'm not interested to be with them. Because I cannot speak about the things I like to speak, like Elvis, his music, his movies..etc..concering to Elvis...

Well..back to the topic... well.. these months which I have been to this wonderful Elvis world.. i have noticed that if you are a fan..the age doesn't matter. Because there is that one thing we share together..and that tie us together. That thing is called the man.. and that man is adorable Elvis. I'm glad that there are lots of younger fans..and I was really surprised when I joined to the Elvis world that there are so many young fans. I almost thought that I was only one. LOL. Not really but..it really surprised me.
We are a big family here and I'm glad to be a member of it.
And I'm glad to meet you all...(y)

Aww, Jatta , thanks for the wonderful post

Well, I was listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers and bands similar to this one before I became a fan of Elvis, and I still like them, although they have gone a bit too commercial lately :D
Discovering Elvis meant discovering a whole lot of other great artists and groups, which are not very known among us - youngsters simply because they are "old". I am really proud of myself knowing that I know so much more of the History Of Music then many of my school mates:blush:...all of that thanks to Elvis.
I've tried to explain Elvis' impact and contribution to music, but very few of them will listen. I can't make anyone listen to Elvis, but I am trying to get them at least to respect him.
I've changed so much since I started listening to him, it's incredible. I've become more mature and conscious about the important things in life:blush:
In other words; Elvis is helping me grow up and I am so happy for that.
I have to disagree with one thing Jatta said. I think that the same interest of music, doesn't make people friends. So, I don't really care if my friends listen to Elvis or not as long as they can accept ME listening to him :D Of course I miss talking about him while hanging out with my friends, but I can do it here! :king:- Hope you know what I mean ;)

I simply love this place! The only place where I can concentrate only on Elvis and have some fun! hehe :D One of the friendliest places on earth where I have made many great friends:group: Thank you all for being such a great friends :notworthy

[QUOTE=Burning_Love;155729]Hi gang !

I Know what are you meaning.I am one of the "young" Elvis fans, and some of my friends are having fun on me.I mean itīs not hard, cause if you love his music there is no matter.I am listening to his music because I love it.....On the other side I have a little problems when somebody is talking about him, every time I hear...You dont know nothing about him....you are so young to know something about him...somebody could not understand this....but you and I know why we are listening to his music...cause itīs special and irrecoverable.(y)(y)(y)(y)

I admire young Elvis fans. It takes a special person to love someone they absolutely will never, ever get a chance to see. I am amazed when I see younger fans.

As for people's attitudes, I've been fighting for Elvis since 1972. I've had to fight strangers. I've even had to fight my own family's attitudes. Just understand that not everyone is going to know how special he is. We are just the lucky ones.

You know what, age has no difference in people looking down on you for being an Elvis fan. I'm of the older original generation who grew up with him and there are still some people my age who frown when I say I'm an Elvis fan...like I've said from the beginning, I just tell them I feel sorry for them for what they are missing.

I've heard many people talk of their friends and family not understanding how people feel about Elvis. I guess I can consider myself lucky as I've never had that problem. Of course I'm at an age where very few try to tell me what to do or think. ;) Ever since I can remember though, I've always "done my own thing". Just have fun and be yourself. Hey, i'm only 15! and i've liked Elvis since i was about 10 so i've only had about 5 years of experience, but i have read tons of the books, i have all the movies, I even have a life size cut out!!! I am a fanatic!!! And i used to get quite a hard time at school for it, i used to be embarrassed about it, but u know what, now i just say to anyone who gives me a hard time about it, i just say "Not my fault i've got good taste!"

The problem is , i think, that no matter what the topic is, everyone is gonna have a different opinion, and unfortunately you will meet people in life, who cant accept that there's maybe isnt just the best! lol

Now, whenever someone tries to berate Elvis i simply blind them with all his wonderful acheivements, and they back off like dogs with their tails between their legs! lol

I admire all the other young fans who stick up for our idol! after all im many many many years time, it will be up to us, and the next generation to keep his memory alive!

I think the problem is that us young kids today are brainwashed into thinking that Elvis stole everything and that he was a racist. But some of us are brought up with his music and our parents tell us the truth about Elvis and thats how we become fans. The young kids need to be educated.

Do you know what I think?? That most of the people that criticise us for being Elvis' fans, DEEP DOWN, SECRETLY, they admire Elvis Presley as a singer and performer who changed the music history. But they will never admit it because they think that Elvis is old fashioned, etc.

Do you know what, i was talking to my cousin who is an 'Emo' some may have heard of them, some not. They dress in black, wear dark clothes. Well she is one and is proud, then she goes and takes the mick out of me for liking elvis, and i said to her, "You know what, i am proud i like Elvis, even though nobody my age likes him" and she goes "Only parents do" She criticises me a lot for liking Elvis, i never criticise her for what she likes, never.
This is what i find unfair of people to do. Why do they do it hey ?

I've heard about 'Emos' Danielle.
Well, next time your cousin criticizes you for liking Elvis, you just laugh at her being an 'Emo' ;):D It's a tactic I rarely use, but it usually works :D
And many people do that because they think they are the 'normal' ones.
lol, the difference is that some people think that are normal but don't criticize others.

Thats why I also cant stand rap. They give these terrible messages of violence and using drugs and telling the young kids the wrong message. You can throw rap in the garbage. I'll stick with Elvis.
I knew that they were all about promoting violence and that they were very demeaning to women. I had no idea that they were into telling big whoppers on Elvis...(n) No wonder there's always one getting shot...:D

Yeah like the song public enemy did. Saying f elvis he didnt mean anything to me. When that simply is not true. Without Elvis they wouldnt be able to sing a song like that. Then you tell the young kids that, they dont believe it and they cant get it through their heads. Its like beating a dead horse.

I wouldn't talk about rap in that way,you know.
I also don't like rap, but don't throw it in the garbage please because people that don't like Elvis would probably say the same to you about him.
It's a personal taste ;) I have a friend that admires rap music and he was telling me stuff about it...well, it seems like rap didn't start with telling wrong messages to the youth. It all started out of describing the life of the people who lived in the ghettos. The swearing thing and rudeness are because todays rap is too commercial. - Sorry I had to say this

You've got a point there Marija. I kinda liked rap...a little when it first started, and thought the dance was neat but it changed so quickly into violence and sleaze that I began to hate it. Now, I can't wait for it to die out. I also really dislike the fashion that goes with it...the baggy pants that are so low they show the underwear etc. To me the whole thing is gross now.

At least in appearance and the songs he sang we could look up to Elvis. His songs were loving message songs for the most part. With rap artists, they portray the worse of humanity in song and appearance.

I hate the rap fashion too! Yet, when it started, it wasn't really like that...

Young people of every generation have created the music they like. I don't really mind what they listen to. I've tried to listen, but I don't even understand half of what they say.
The begiinning rap did describe the hard life of some.

Was it really that much different from what Elvis did?
I can remember the parents and preachers complaining about his music. ;)

Rap just gives me a headache now...

As to hearing EP was a racist and stole black music; kids hear that from some of the older generation too, I have a mixed son-in-law I had to educate about that . His grandfather told him those stories . Didn't take him long to learn when he got in the family. :P

Thanks for the video clip Marija. Yes that's how I remember the start of the rap too and see nothing wrong with the way it started. The trouble with it for me is I can't hear one after the other without it becoming repetitive then boring.

I know where Burning Love is coming from on the fact that a young Elvis fan will get made fun of sometimes. I'm about to be 26 years old coming January 6 and I grew up on Elvis most of my life. Through the times it has been up and down during the years getting made fun of. The most popular question I get is "Why do you listen to that music?" Well, my answer is always that is what I listen to. I don't care for any type of other music really except for the music of the 50s and 60s. That is it. But since that time and me older now, I get some who respect the idea I listen to Elvis and is a Elvis fan.

I think the problem is that us young kids today are brainwashed into thinking that Elvis stole everything and that he was a racist.

This isn't happening at all. The idea that Elvis stole black music is just one of the theories about him out there. Kids are smart enough to delve into music themselves (if not now, then later when they're a bit older, like we all did eventually). There is no active "brainwashing" of kids to perpetuate this theory.

And no matter what happens, there will always be a certain percentage of people - young and old - who will choose to believe this. And that is their right.

Look at all the rap stars today that say Elvis was a racist and that Elvis stole everything.

You are fostering exactly the same stereotype you are criticising. Not all rap stars believe Elvis was a thief.

Most kids believe what they say and they think that. I dont believe it because my parents told me the truth and I educated myself using all of the resources available.

Your parents told you their truth, not the truth. Not everything parents tell their kids is correct.

Another stereotype.

In the fifties, people were criticising rock'n'roll for being the "Devil's music" and leading young people to hell.

Same with jazz in the twenties. It was all "garbage".

Not all rap is about violence, drugs and mysogyny. It is mostly about alienation, survival and urban issues.

Rap/hip-hop is definitely not my cup of tea either, but you can't criticise an entire form of music based on what you have seen on MTV and such, or what you've read in the paper. Delve deeper: there is some worth there, as there is in all forms of music.

And how do you know what's true for Chuck D and Public Enemy? Have you lived their life? Walked a mile in their shoes, as people are so fond of saying here?

No, Elvis meant nothing to some of these rappers.

He might mean something to you, me and everyone else on here.

But not everyone. Accept it.

And the fact that Elvis may have paved the way for other artists down the track is meaningless. Not everyone owes Elvis Presley a debt of gratitude.

Because that's what some of the media and the horrified anti-rap people want to focus on.

Rap and hip-hip is now the dominant force in popular music today, and has taken the mantle from rock'n'roll as the driving force in popular culture - just as rock'n'roll took over from the Big Band and Swing eras.

In another 10 or 15 years - maybe longer if rock'n'roll's lengthy hold is anything to go by - something else wil take rap's place ... and then all the old rap fans will criticise the "new" form of music. It is an endless cycle.

Rock - like jazz, swing etc - will never really die. It's just taking a back seat from now on.

No, I don't want to hear all that.

But, in referencing Elvis' music, parents and preachers were "seeing" the sexual promiscuity in their eyes that his music was causing.
It wasn't {I don't think} but it's what they believed .
We all seem to have lived through all that without too much problem.

Yeh, the media does take it and run with it. Some of the kids like to see just how far they can push it as well. My hubs is a coach....the kids are always trying to get away with the nastiest rap music that they can. I think the kids enjoy the "shock value", just as kids have always liked what they think the adults won't approve of. That's one concept that will never change.

Being an Elvis fan since I was about eleven years old I went through all the usual teasing and name-calling etc......but it never made me change my mind, and to be honest it never really bothered me.A thing that does actually bug me to no end is a breed of person I discovered later in life......the ones who have declared themselves qualified music critics simply by having read so many music magazines etc over the years, people who seldom play music except when they feel the need to impress others, people who dish out the old Elvis cliches like Lennon`s "Elvis died when he went into the army"........These people would struggle to name ten Elvis songs but have no hesitation in writing him off as yesterdays news......grrrr!!

Well i consider myself a young fan although more recently i have somewhat become obsessed with researching new findings every other day, but i think it is good that old and young people are becoming more involved with finding out about such a great man who is the legend of all legends. I would have loved to have been a teenager back in the days when Elvis was alive and to have seen him in concert. It would have certainly been something to tell my son in years to come. Being 35 this year i did grow up around the Elvis music in my family home as my mother absolutely idolised him, and i remember on several occasions she quoted this to me :"One day when you are a bit older you will maybe want to find out about Elvis and you will come to your own conclusions of what you feel how he came across in the world of music and many other things he was talented for too films humour etc" And she was so right. Back then in the late 70's i guess i was pretty young and was disinterested in it, but now i do have more interest older i guess and wanting to find out about such a legend. So it is good no matter how old you are or young that people do want to know and i feel that this will go on for many many generations as he was such a legend. I still would like to know so much more and am wanting to read some books now and will do once i buy some. There is so much to know about elvis and sometimes i often ask my dad and my mum about back when he was alive and they tell me some good things and their own memories of when they used to hear about him on the tv,radio etc or seeing him in a concert and they have passed on useful info for me to research. So all is good Elvis fans young and old we all have something to share with each other that love for him will always be here forever.......:)

I know! I particularly like the ones who tell you Elvis did nothing good after Sun, but when you ask which of his Sun recordings they like, they can't tell you.

But actually I think it's not so bad being a young Elvis fan now (I'm in college). I think liking Elvis was a lot more uncool in the 80s or the 90s. I think the focus on some of the tabloid stuff has died down, and there's more of a recognition of what Elvis did in popular music.

And I think Peter Guralnick's books helped a lot with that, the focus shifting back a little to Elvis' music.

Not all rap is like this ...
I would say much of it is pretty negative- but more and more rappers are coming up with positive messages.
But how many artists of the 50s (or any era) were involved in gang type violence where people end up dead?
Jam Master Jay, 37, of Run DMC, shot at recording studio in New York's Queens borough.

March 28, 1999 — Freaky Tah, 27, of Lost Boyz, shot as he leaves a party in Queens.

April 5, 1997 — Albert Thomas, 22, of U.N.L.V., found shot in a car in New Orleans.

March 9, 1997 — The Notorious B.I.G., 24, shot while sitting in his car outside party celebrating the Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles.

Sept. 13, 1996 — Tupac Shakur, 25, dies nearly a week after a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. He had been riding with a record company executive down the casino Strip.
This is just some of the big name guys, it does not include local rappers who are trying to get there start, such as Andre "Mac Dre" Hicks, Stack Bundles of New York, Proof (Eminems friend) in Detroit, Big Hawk of Houston, Oakland rapper Seagram, Bone Skanless and Young Kee of Michigan and on and on....

:bangin:Let me tell you something that's kind of wierd.. My mom was a big fan in 1956-1958,and after Elvis went to the Army she stopped liking him.She said because his music changed. I reckon it was because he was making mostly soundtracks for the movies. I didn't become a fan until August 16, 1977 (the day he died) I was 12 years old at the time. My mom asked me a few years ago "why do you still collect Elvis stuff? And why do you still listen to Elvis? Well,i said i can't explain why. Then i put a c.d. in of Elvis' 30 # 1 hits in and she started to sing along to Don't be cruel and All shook up. I said "see that's why ..His music just makes you feel good. She said yes i understand now. And she's never asked that question again.

I'm 15 years old andhave been an Elvis fan for about 2 1/2 years now, (meaning extreme fan, I liked him since 2002). At school, I always get shouts from across the hallway "ELVIS IS GAY!!!!!!!!!!" My friends and family get tired of me liking Elvis, and my step-dad has even put a ban on Elvis while I'm around. However, I seem to be respected by older fans, as they see that "Oh, so you're not like everyone else in your generation who listens to all that hip-hop crap." I used to get criticism from them for not liking his gospel as much, but now that I like it more, I don't have that problem. The only disrespect from older fans I get now is when they hear that I'm not religious (I hate to say athiest, because I believe something, I just don't know what.) and still like Elvis, because its like I'm going against him in some form. (Hey, I can still have my own opinions, can't I?)
