I'v downloaded some stuff in the rar formt. However it looks likes media player 11 will not support this file so I cant get them off my hard drive and burn a disc.I got win rar which allows me to play them.Media player will work in conjuction with that. The problem is that I still cant drag the files over to burn them.Any ideas or is there something better than media player i could use that would allow me to burn cd's?

JAK,

i always unzip them with WINRAR into their original format (mainly mp3, sometimes wma) and then burn them - if needed ;) - without any problems onto CDs or DVDs. there's no real need to keep them in zipped format.

but i also frequently burn the original WINRARs as mere backups onto DVDs / CDs .... by either using nero or a small freeware program called 'CD burner XP'. very simple and userfriendly, i use it more and more often because of these two factors.

i think the problem in your case solely lies in the factor 'media player'. afraid i only can offer the 2 above alternatives, i personally tend to avoid the WMP whenever possible.

hope this helps, ellie

Thanks for youre quick response.I could use the help.I downloaded some entire cd's in rar.I use winrar to open the file and i see all the tracks on the cd and i can play them. The tracks are listed as mp3 files.Once i can see all the tracks in the file how do I burn them?I want a disc I can play on my home and car system.Does the software link you provided accomplish this?I guess once unzipped I just need the proper software to burn them?

you are welcome ;). just happened to be online today.

yes, the software does provide easy burning either on CD or on DVD (don't let yourself be fooled by it's name, it also works for DVDs).

just install the software and choose the option 'burn data disc', the option right on top.

in the case of DVDs it makes sense to chose as burning speed the 1x1385, not the fastest available, please also check the 'override automatic speed detection' just to be on the safe side.

plus it makes sense to burn the disc as 'finalize disc' and not as ready for later add-ons. i remember to have had problems in the case of DVDs with the add-on-option (can't remember if using this program or nero).

for CDs i never use any burner but simply use the XP-pro own default software. insert empty CD, drag & drop the files you want (also WINrars) and burn. i never use any program for that.

if you have XP pro (also should be available in XP home) that option for CDs is the easiest way imaginable.

PS i doubt the player in your car would be able to read zipped files - they are normally limited to the mainstream formats mp3, wma and maybe wav / ogg.

if your car's player does read as well DVDs containing audiotracks, i can tell you from my own experience that DVDs are the far better choice as you will have a far bigger variety of tracks available than on CDs (unless you have a capacity to hold more than 10 - 12 discs which is the average).

That worked perfectly.I think WMP would have worked also if i would have unzipped the file and draged them.It became clearer to me once i played with the software you told me about.A big thank you!!

glad it worked, my friend!

we all need to learn from time to time, believe me, and struggle with unknown formats. i have experiences of my own, those of the 'third kind' :'(.
