As some of you know I just started reading Joe Esposito's book, "Elvis Straight Up" today...one of the chapters is titled, "Elvis and his fans" I want you to read this - and if this doesn't make you tear up and almost cry, I don't know what will, and I want to thank Joe E. for saying this because I know as a lifetime fan it means so much:

"Aside from his immediate family, Elvis' greatest love of his life was you, his fans. His fans meant more to him than just about anything. He fully realized that without your love and support, he probably would have remained driving a truck or hammering out a meager living in some laborious trade. If I were asked, "Joe, what did Elvis love more than anything?" I would have to say, "his audience."

In all the years I was with Elvis, I rarely ever saw him refuse an autograph or decline a photograph with a fan, and even then only if there were some pressing extenuating circumstance. He knew that without his fans, he would be unable to exist. He relied as much on you to uplift his spirits as you relied on him to uplift yours. During the toughest times of his life, the one solace he knew he could rely on was the love and support of his audience. No matter how poor he was feeling or what troubled his mind, he knew he only had to walk onstage to be healed emotionally by the intense energy of the adoring crowd."

Is this not the most beautiful thing you've ever heard? To know that we made him feel as special as he made us feel - that is just over powering to know......god bless you Elvis, we still love you even today.

Thanks for sharing this with us Kelly, I haven't read the book yet and it is wonderful to know we also gave him a little bit of all that he gave to us.

Thanks a lot for posting this Kelly...This is really nice to know he really cared about his audience, and that it meant more to him than money :)
I really hope it made him feel as special as we fans feel when his music is playing...

This is lovely from Joe.

Perhaps Joe sharing how Elvis felt about his fans, may now help put situations into prospective, to have a feeling, on just how special, and how giving of himself, Elvis was.

It is good to read the other sides of stories, to see what makes sense.

Thanks for sharing, Kelly.

you all are very welcome...I encourage you to get this book if you have not. There is more in that chapter that just brought tears to my eyes....the whole book is good though. I was skeptical but I'm glad I got it.

I'm so glad to know that we made Elvis feel as good as he made us feel....I'm glad to know that we did bring happiness in his life.

Actually I don't really feel like that since I wasn't born yet when Elvis was still around...makes me feel like I missed something, like the occasion to pay back what Elvis brought me :(
Nevermind, I'm too emo :P

Pauline, don't feel bad because I honestly think Elvis is "up there" and he knows we still love him.....I know some don't believe in that stuff...but I certainly do.....so feel better knowing that...

This did make me tear up, thank you for posting it so very much.
I've often wondered if he knew HOW MUCH we loved him and HOW MUCH he meant to us? I hope that wherever he is he knows it now.
I know I will never be able to repay him the debt aquired thru all he's given me.

you are welcome Suzan...I think this particular subject is something we all agree on...no matter our opinions in other threads...we all truly love this amazing man so much - and just knowing he felt the same way - well - just makes life alot better.

Thank you Kelly. That was wonderful to read....very moving...

I had heard thing similar to that, but those words were very touching.

It's sad to think about today's celebrities and how little (in comparison) they can give back to their fans and the man who was on the highest pedestle there was/is..the man whom celebrities stood in line to meet...was the one who took the time to be say thank you the most.

Thank you, Elvis. As was inscribed on his tombstone..."he had a God given talent that he shared with the world."

Can you imagine if Elvis were alive today to discover the internet and read what fans have to say about him on message boards like this? (Except for the one or two people who can ruin a message board). That would have been a great way for Elvis to hear about how much his fans loved him. Great to hear he thought so highly of the fans.

Me too, Suzan, you know, I find it sad, that generally speaking, it is our culture to not say how we feel about people, until they are gone.

In my opinion, it should be said, and as often as felt. It doesn't do any good to wait to say how much you love someone, after they are gone, don't you think? You know, I used to write letters to my nana, and post them, to say how much I loved her. I'm glad I did, I'm glad when she passed, she knew, just how truely loved she was.

I'm thrilled people here, say how they feel, too. (y)

Take care,

I believe Elvis was the most humble person in this planet. He never fails to give the full credit to his faithful fans for what he achieved. Elvis was indeed a unique human being. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Kell-Kell! Thanx for the post...it was always obvious to me that the fans were of the utmost importance to Elvis. With us, he felt adored, relaxed, and above all else - accepted and loved unconditionally. It's a wonderful thought....just knowing that he derived as much pleasure from us and we took from being in his presence. Priceless....

It's a good book written by good ol' Joe through his eyes.
Couldn't get better. Hopefully the rest of you (who haven't read it yet) will pay that much attention and read it.(y)(y)(y)
