i was reading on a website that in 1974 between august and october that elvis went through a rather rough patch in his life...such recordings of these times suggest that it is so. Involving cussing and saying off the wall things...accusations of drug abuse and so on... i just wondered what my fellow members thought of this subject and how they think elvis handled himself?

I don't know about this time period.....it seems to me that it was later when it became worse (his drug use) but I'm not sure....

I don't know why but I have always thought that 1974 was an "Ok" year for him...I have always thought that 1973 was more "rough"......I guess I am wrong, according to the recordings that you have mentioned :hmm: - Who knows?:hmm:
But he sure was having a hard time with his life during the last years :'(
This period is where the famous "Desert Storm" drug monologue happened we just debated that thread and its probably not far back on the thread list.
So a lot of opinion and discussion is there.

I'm not sure about the Raging Tiger incident-but there is a couple threads on College Park If I'm not mistaken.

I think that it was 1967 again. In saying that I mean, he's tired of the recordings, tired of touring and tired of everyday being different. So this one incedent of a hotel worker getting fired gave him an excuse to vent out. The pills he was on didn't help either.

I think by 74 Elvis was tired of the business machine that surrounded him, they could`nt even get him in the studio all year long, and blow ups with Parker. He was starting to rebel. There was also a huge change physically, from how he looked in "Aloha".
Really sad.

I believe in Elvis lifetime most part of it went through rough sailing and there were few times of his life that he really enjoyed what he has achieved. His life was a roller coaster ride from the beginning up to the end, the price he had to pay for being ELVIS.

I think that 74 was the last year that he really tried to make anything better and was restless because everything was just going downhill after that he just gave up

You must check out, DESERT STORM [import] which is for me, an amazing show because it's so different.
NIGHT FEVER IN VEGAS [rock legends import] is also worth checking out. These soundboard shows - plus FTD titles: IT'S MIDNIGHT, I FOUND MY THRILL, LIVE IN L.A.,and DRAGONHEART all from 74' represent Elvis rocking and show him at his best and not so best.
1974 is a very interesting year in which the King toured constantly and for the most part, he was on scincillating form dishing out karate kicks during songs and lying on his back singing - Elvis was still on form and 74' is my favourite Elvis year.
However,Desert Storm contains the infamous drugs dialogue but it's really not that bad; plus there's the funky rocking, "If You Talk In Your Sleep" which is worth the price of the CD alone!
As Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis was also recorded in March of 74 which is an absolute cracker!
Finally, I could go on and on but 1974 was one "hell" of a year!
That year is memorable but not in a good way. That was the year when his problems just couldnt be hidden anymore. He bascially let it all hangout in front of the public. The Elvis of 74 was deeply troubled.

I would say the man himself was not that 100 percent, but as an artist he did some shows that year... to me some are the best of his life....

The Memphis concerts were very good.On the flip side you had some of the very first shows that were considered truly bad by Elvis.

It looked like a troubled year too to me. I haven't heard the concerts Desert Storm and College Park but the pictures of him in the leather suits don't look good. I think he only wore those in Aug. His stomach looked bloated and he looked kind of out of it.
But again, other pictures of him in 1974 looked great. The man could change so much in just a matter of months!.

I agree Diane...
But always found the vegas shows in jan/feb and august very good (variation in setlists)...and the march tour (Richmond ,Memphis),dayton and south bend (october Tour)...

You made a great point.Elvis' physical appearance could change drastically so quickly.Comparing his appearance towards the end to just 3 or 4 years later is amazing.I think his lifestyle just took it's toll.Normally you would think it would take several years of gradual change. He seemed to age so fast.If you compare a pic from Aloha to just 2 years later you might think youre looking at two different people.

I think Elvis gave up in 1974,and didn't care about his weight.
Then he was getting bad habits, and from then on I think he also began taking more pills.I think this year is the year we lost Elvis...

Many people like, the Inspirations and James Burton, commented on how Elvis would look overweight and tired for one tour then bounce back and look trim and rested the next. The last few years his body did not have the capacity to do this any longer.

He was on a roller coaster that's for sure. That had to be very stressfull on his body.

I agree with you Jak. In some ways, it seems this was the beginning of the end so to speak. There were peaks and lots of valley's from this point on.:blink:

In terms of his behaviour and attitude, 1974 is the year where the drugs affected him the most.
Before then, he pretty much had a handle on it all (the three pre-74 overdoses notwithstanding) but during this period he was out of control, and there were times on stage where he was simply embarrassing.
After '74, he seemed to level off (and was almost another person) and pretty much stayed that way until the end.
It's certainly one of his most interesting periods anyway.

Elvis was one complex man. Even with all the fame and fortune, he still wasnt happy. Its sad. I wonder what he was searching for?

INTERESTING is certainly a good word to describe 1974 Getlo!! :hmm:
You have the January/February '74 engagement in Las Vegas (as documented on the I FOUND MY THRILL FTD) which was a very good engagement with Elvis in a good mood and even bringing back some songs he hadn't performed live in a couple of years (YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELING and SWEET CAROLINE) as well as debuting some new songs (HELP ME and SPANISH EYES).
Then of course, you have the excellent March tour including the well documented and well discussed Memphis show!
As for the August/September '74 Vegas engagement, what started out as a potentially promising engagement with the infamous opening show song lineup change (on the import FROM SUNSET BLVD. TO PARADISE RD., among many other CD titles) quickly deterioriated into the closing show (well documented on the DESERT STORM import CD). Not to say every show during this engagement was bad (as evidenced by the IT'S MIDNIGHT FTD)...in fact there are some great performances from this engagement! But the overall engagement was an up and down affair!
Then of course came the debacle known as the College Park show (documented on A PROFILE VOL. 2 - THE KING ON STAGE, DISCS 2 & 3) which was part of the even more rocky September/October tour. While it was well known that Elvis' performances could change dramatically from night to night, by this period of Elvis' life, his performances could even change from the matinee to the evening performance...as evidenced by the Dayton, OH. shows on 10/6. While the matinee performance was definitely sub-standard (as heard on A PROFILE VOL. 2 - THE KING ON STAGE DISC 3), the evening performance (heard on BREATHING OUT FIRE) was MUCH more upbeat and energetic.
All in all, Getlo is 100% right...1974 was indeed an INTERESTING year to say the least!!

Tough question Rosanne....maybe the detox. that he went through in early '75 helped. Maybe he had a renewed fire for performing and touring following his stint in the hospital. :hmm:

Elvis went through a detox in 75? Can you explain why? And I wonder why Elvis didnt go through a detox for the CBS Special, knowing he was going to be on tv. Maybe because he couldn't?

Well, TECHNICALLY it was a hospitalization for illness, but while he was in the hospital, they tried to get him off of his prescription medications which seemed to actually work for a while during 1975, hence lending to the spectacular shows that Elvis gave during the spring and summer of 1975! (y)
