I love this song. I'm listenin to it as I type.
It's straight up funk and soul and different than the average Elvis song. I wished he'd done more like this and not stuck to country and pop ballads so much.
That bass is kickin.
My friends who don't even like Elvis love this song because of it's hip hop vibe.
Anyone else feelin it?

It is funky and I like it, but my personal preference are the ELVIS ballads. Those have always been my favorites even in the early years. (y)
It was done at Stax studios, so you can't get too much more funky than that. The song was written by Leiber and Stoller.
A lot of great musicians worked on the sessions. Including Donald "Duck" Dunn playing bass on some songs

I like the ballads as well. I'm just sayin I wished he woulda done more funk and rnb like this instead of Take Good Care Of Her and Honky Tonk Angel.
Some folks don't know that Al Jackson played drums on a few songs with Elvis at Stax.
He wrote Let's Stay Together for Al Green.

This song is funky! I like it a lot! I have Stranger In My Home Town on my ipod but the version I have is candid..... very candid and goofy! I guess he was just practicing the song or something.
I have an Elvis CD that's is nothing but R&B. I found it at this CD warehouse store that we have here. I like it a lot! I can't believe that someone got rid of it. It's from Time life and idk if they're selling it anymore. :(

Not really hip hop, but funky vibe, yes :)
It reminds me of "little less conversation", I don't know why?

Cool song, yes.
But a "hip hop vibe" ??
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh .........
Have to agree on that. Hip hop is such an aggressive thing - I recently discovered a video about a judge explaining they're punishing youngsters by making them listen to Dolly Parton and other country artists. It doesn't hurt as bad as jail-time or a fine, but it works to prevent these kids from playing rap and hip hop at extreme volumes.
This song on the other hand is fun to listen to. It's more funk than it is hip hop.
All in all, if you think "Take Good Care Of Her" was not suitable or un-cool for Elvis, you're missing a whole lotta emotional side of Elvis.

Oh what could have been. If only he had recorded this during the December sessions. Great song sung poorly by Elvis. He sounds half asleep.
I could be wrong, but I think Duck Dunn and Al Jackson only played on Sweet Angeline, maybe one other. Anyone??

I love this song. You should buy the recent FTD album 'Raised On Rock' and listen to the rough mix. It's amazing.

Dunn and Jackson played on:
Girl of Mine
Good Bad But Beautiful
Color My Rainbow
Sweet Angeline
The Wonders You Perform
Jackson was shot to death in 1975 by intruders in his home.

He wrote Let's Stay Together for Al Green.
Actually, he co-wrote it with Al Green and Willie Mitchell ...

Cool song indeed, and much more interesting than Take Good Care of Her, one of the poorest choices for single in the 70s

Yeah, that one sucked I'm afraid. It's a lovely song, but Elvis should never have done it for a variety of reasons. There are so many better versions out there.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad some people are happy with my comments.
I think people are overlooking some of the gems from 1973.. "For Ol' Times Sake", this version kills me - another Tony Joe White song, different from "Polk Salad Annie", but very significant if you ask me.
I really don't think Elvis sang it "poorly". He just sounded tired, but it doesn't sound bad for the funky groove or for emotional ballads alike; that was really the way he felt at the time and it was all sincere and taken from his own experiences in life.
To me, loving Elvis Presley is about sharing the good and the bad. I'm sure the good outweighed the bad.

You are right...I have always loved "Take Good Care Of Her". I thinl alot of people are surprised to find out that it too was a Tony Joe White song, it's so completely different from "Polk Salad Annie":D
