The following story is currently circulating among fans. While a primary source is not known it makes interesting reading:
Elvis committed his first sin when he was about 3 or 4 years old. He stole 2 empty cola bottles from a neighbor's porch. When his mother asked him about the bottles, he admitted that he had taken them from the Harris's porch without their permission.. Gladys took him by the hand and dragged him to the Harris's house.
Although Elvis was embarassed at having to return the bottles, he was even more upset when Gladys announced that he was to confess his sin at church the following Sunday. She wanted to teach him a lesson he would never forget. When Sunday came, Elvis pretended to be sick. His conditon was instantly cured, however when Vernon showed him a strap.
When the awful moment came, Gladys pushed Elvis up to the front of the church and ordered him to confess in front of the entire Asembly of God congregation. With tears brimming form his blue eyes and his head hanging low, Elvis whispered his wrong doing and then ran out of the church crying. He never again took anything without permission. It was one lesson he learned the hard way.

Amusing story that relates more than what Elvis have learned. The story has a simple moral lesson all of us young and old must learn: Never take anything that does not belong to you and better ask permission if you intend to do so.

Thanks Jen, I read that too a while back. Tough on a little kid to have to own up to what he did in front of a church congregation, but I'm sure he never forgot it.

Mom did something like that to my younger brother. He had to return something he took from a convenience store & apologize to the clerk. He was prettybad as a small child. I don't think it really taught him a lesson. I remember after that if we went to stores, she'd make him turn his pockets inside out to make sure he didn't take anything when we got ready to leave. Luckily he outgrew that!

I've just learned something new, never heard about this before. It was a good lesson learned(y) More parents need to be like that today.

Gladys & Vernon Presley raised someone that was no perfect, but it was and this is apart from his musical talent, a very special human being, guess they did a good job.

Some parents would say "don't ever make a mistake - be like me" and when you do they say "you're no good", but don't explain why.
The kinda parents who would starve you to death and who would smoke you out. People who think skipping your homework is a greater sin than hitting old ladies.
There's more to say for Elvis' parents method..! Although I wouldn't do it in front of a crowd - it is what a child needs.

A little hard punishment... :(

My son when he was 6 went with my wife to a 5 & Dime store. When they left and got home he had a small plastic plane which he had just walked out with. She told him that was stealing and took him back and made him give it to the clerk and apologize. The manager told my wife, "Because he was honest and brought it back we'll let him keep it" my wife said "No I want him to know there is no reward ever in doing wrong" He never forgot it to this day. Thats how lessons are learned.

My niece did the same thing with a hair bauble and when my sister found out after they got home, she took her back to the store to return it with an apology. It worked.....
