View Full Version : The curtain ~ why?

At the top of the stairs there is a blue curtain.
If the wall behind it is solid, like many other similar walls at Graceland, what is the purpose of the curtain? Why have it if it is merely covering a blank, solid wall? Why not just put up some photos instead? Or leave the wall blank?
The reason for the curtain eludes me

If there is a mirror behind there, it still doesn't make sense to cover it with massive drapery (imo).

I'd say it's just a design thing, and that a curtain would look better than a plain wall when walking up the stairs. A curtain doesn't necessarily have to be covering anything ...

I disagree (jmo). The curtain looks as if it's covering a misplaced window. I guess it was just a 'design thing' but, imo, it looks odd.

well, upstairs on the other side of the wall - is the stairs leading up from the jungle room....not sure what it would be hiding up there...may be just covering a wall....I agree about the decorative part of that....but guess we won't know unless someone has actually pulled aside the curtain to look.

If that's the case, remember she also agreed that Elvis wore sunglasses on stage - as if it was a regular occurrence. So I'd wait until someone actually pulls the curtain back before putting too much stock into what she has to say!

I don't know for sure, but if I recall correctly, with interior decorating, that was the fashion, it was meant to give the illusion of opening up, for the person to wonder what was behind there, perhaps another room? (Or a fall, lol).
Could be wrong, lol.

Its a window there. If you look outside and you will see where there is a window where that curtin is. They have white shade behind that to keep sun out a little then with dark blue no one even knows there is light coming threw.

It's either a window or small balcony. Gotta look thru my pics from our visit last year.
Hmmm...this is the back view. I guess it is the part sticking out and goes to the balcony?
There is a two way mirror directly facing the curtain on the other side of the stairwell. I was told it was installed so he could see who was coming up the stairs before they added monitors in the house.

It's just a wall. The curtain was put up about 12 years ago because the wall behind the curtain is faded because of the flash photography. I know there is not supposed to be any flash photography, but most people think this is a great place to be told this at. Aside from that people were leaning into other display areas to try and get pictures down the hallways. Can't let him have one iota of privacy.

Ksimms, it's really difficult to determine exactly what is going on on the 2nd floor of Graceland
Look at these 2 floor plans ~ (they are purposely flipped and reversed so as to look from the back of the house)
See the arrows? One floor plan shows the "wall" as separating the stair landing from Ginger's dressing room. (Important to note: It does not show the wall as being solid). The other floor plan shows the "wall" as being predominantly exposed to the outdoor sun deck.
In my opinion, image 2 is more correct.

Dear everybody. Vissie has made some good and critical observations here, but the truth is, that none of these floorplans are correct. The first one is absolutely false in anyway almost. The second is correct in the case of the stairway and Gingers room, but is incorrect showing a door between Lisa Maries room and Elvis' dressing room (there is no door). If you want to see the correct, look at my graphic. Best regards, Martin

So, it's just a covered wall on the staircase, is it?
Hmmm, let's go back to August 31 ...
All the pics show a curtain.
I'd say it's just a design thing, and that a curtain would look better than a plain wall when walking up the stairs. A curtain doesn't necessarily have to be covering anything ...

They are glass bricks/blocks, probably a way of bringing light into the stairway, which would fit in with the rest of the house as the original owners also had glass brick walls where the peacock windows between the music room and living room were. And, until the peacock's arrived, they were kept covered with heavy drapes too.
On a side note anyone else think it strange that Elvis, who was so much into symbolism, charms etc., had peacocks indoors as they are suppossed to be bad luck inside?

:hmm: perhaps he didn't know it posed bad luck to have them inside (does that extent to drawings and/or paintings of them too?), as I had no idea about that, thanks for sharing

Thank you for validating what I've been saying the whole time and I posted as well (w/o the arrow) the pic w/the gap in the draperies showing part of the window and was basically called a liar and that my source was incorrect.
Again thank you for validating my statement from the get go.:D

Thank you friend! :D
Also This Is Elvis did film upstairs and about the button on Graceland's dining table. :) I so dislike being called a liar (not in so many words but that is what some implied.) Anyway, glad this matter was finally addressed once and for all.:)

Found out whats behind the curtain.
On the other side of the wall it is split between a bathroom that Priscilla and the other girls used and a sundeck which is actually the roof above the Jungle Room.
There is a window in the bathroom that you can use to get out onto it, but apparently it was rarely used and Elvis did keep it covered like it is today.

did they ever use the sundeck???

It was right in front of us all the time! In a floorplan of upstairs which I've had saved for ages it actually distinguishes the glass block wall behind the curtains. Part of the wall between the stairways and the back restroom.
As for the sundeck it was the result of the extension which resulted in the den behind the kitchen and was accessed by the stairway that runs up from the extreme right of the jungle room as you look at it from the kitchen. The doorway out onto it is shown on one of the photos here as well as the stairway from the jungle room.
I really think we're getting somewhere here! At least I'm understanding upstairs better! :p

That's after the remodel yes.
Riley as I've said long time b4 regarding this and elvis priestly just reposted...the staircase in the jungle room leads to the sundeck, it has since been sealed. There is also access to it from Lisa's room (or there was)...I don't believe there is access anymore from the spare bath upstairs (from what I"ve been told).
I don't know if it was every used, I do believe maybe it was, but also may have been put there as a decorative thing when Elvis enclosed the porch for the den.
In bday video Pris is shown coming down those stairs (wrought iron at that time) so she may have been coming from the deck or quite possibly the bathroom?
Gee wiz, I wonder if Priscilla has seen whats behind the curtain?:D
IMO I'm sure she knows whats behind a curtain in a house she lived in for years.

Yes I remember you explained it to me Sue and I understand it but I wanted still to know if someone knew if they really used the sundeck

The sundeck was used, but rarely.
You can get to it through a window in the bathroom.

:D Riley.:)
I wonder why the door was sealed? The one from the den.
Nancy Rooks is proven wrong, she has stated that was glass there.
Glass tiles used to be used a lot to allow natural light into the house without it actually being a functional see thru window. Perhaps its that type tile?

And at one time it was prior to Graceland remodel...look at old photos before the deck and other things were changed.
Glass tiles are a form of glass. :)

I'm sure it's only bad luck if the feathers are opened out.

I think it`s a mirror behind the curtain. I will search through my old photos and see what I can find. I believe I have a photo of the wall uncovered, taken in the late 50s.

It's not a mirror.
There is a bathroom and a sundeck behind that wall.

It sounds to me like the glass tile window was there to let sun in before the bathroom and sundeck was added on by Elvis and instead of taking it out and putting in a solid wall, he just had it covered with a curtain. Glass tiles come in many sizes and shapes as Suzan stated. They can be huge glass blocks that are bumpy surfaced and some are thinner, smooth or frosted or beveled etc.

Yup I remember those glass tiles in bathrooms as well. As far as the peacocks being bad luck and we've heard that before, we're in deep trouble, I raise them and we have paintings, sculptures etc. all over the house.

I dont know weather this visual will help, its only a 3d-sketch so far in my work of all of Graceland. But after all, it shows, that behind the tiled window is...Gingers bathroom.
