The 1977 special tv broadcast of our man, Isn?t my favorite at all. But after seeing this clip on youtube, from the CBS Special (AND IN REALLY GOOD QUALITY) I could still see the spark in Elvis? eyes when he was messing up Are you lonesome tonight, just look at his smile. Wow!

If you look closelym you?ll se the good ?old? Elvis, like he was i for example 1970. He sounds and looks that way. I especially like when he says ?what a heck with it, you know? that?s the real him man.

I know a lot of people have said that he was drunk, but no. I think he?s sober, maybe not 100% because of the medication, but enough to know what he?s doing.

Give it a chance and watch it, you won?t regret it! :D:D

You know, I don't think he was messed up - I think he was really nervous and embarrassed by his weight - and I think that in his mind - he wouldn't be loved like this.....does anyone else agree to this?

I'm sorry, but I disagree. He turned it into "fun" when he realized
he'd lost his pace. He was still aware enough and a professional
enough to do it, and he obviously gets away with it for many of
his fans.
I have been a fan for more than two thirds of my life. I'm the exact
age Elvis was when he died (well, thankfully I survived past 42 years,
7 months and 8 days now) and it hurts me to see him as ill as he was
then.
Also, as much as people like to say his voice never failed him,
I think if you're fair, you must admit that at times it did. The
sound changed, the power behind it took more effort and
even in this segment of "Are you Lonesome Tonight" it wavered
at certain parts. "My Way", however, is one of the best versions
he ever did, so at the very least it should be accepted that his
voice was not consistent near the end.

And please: no comments on how I "must not be a real fan,
or else I wouldn't dare say these things about him". I am a
real, true, fan - just not one who sees him through rosecolored
glasses.

I would never do that, I'm not that type person as I believe we all have our opinions and am not the type to argue over silly stuff....so I totally respect your opinion....I will watch the whole video when I get home...only watched part.

I have been a fan since 7, I am now 52. In fairness to Elvis- IMO recitation in a song (especially a long sequence like this) is pretty hard to get right all the time. Elvis just had fun with it when it did not go so well.

I have seen this video several times. And I feel a bit sad too..because Elvis was so ill back then. well, everyone have their own opinions...and many people just thinks that he would be drunk.. but yes.. there was something else in his head.
I may be right that in 1977 Elvis didn't care how his singling went or how went lyrics.. he was too ill for that. As he was totally fed up with singing live and travel around the country. even he loved his fans and live audience..but in 1977 it wasn't enough. he didn't care it that much..
and this is my opinion and I hope you don't get mad at me that I think of this :blink:

And no, I don't think he was drunk at all, I think he just wasn't into the sappy lyrics and was joking around....because look at the awesome job he did on "My Way" if he were drunk or high - he wouldn't have fumbled one and not the other......god bless him.....

Love it ! He never lost himself. Though he appeared to be very ill, he definately wasn't, inside he still was the one and only 'Elvis Presley'. He still had the voice and the charm.

i think he got through this okay and appeared fairly straight in the June 21 concert but for nthe bulk of the June 19 concert he was clearly over-medicated

I too agree that this concert was a sad one to watch...but only sad in one sense. I see the Elvis that was ill, and not nearly as agile as he once was. I see the Elvis who had aged a bit, gained some weight, and seemed to be a little insecure about himself. But...

I also see the Elvis who could mesmerize an audience like virtually no one else could. I see the dynamic personality...still in tact despite personal problems. I see the sense of humor that he let shine through, mostly I believe, because he felt that unconditional acceptance from those who loved him so...his fans! And I see that captivating smile, the boyish charm, that "twinkle" in his eye when he was on the verge of breaking out into uncontrollable laughter.

So yes, it is sad to see the pain and the struggle that he faced in his last days...but it is comforting to me to know that even that near to the end of his short life, he did it his way...and he knew without a doubt that we (his fans) loved him for it... :king::'(

Well said. That is exactly how I feel. You know, after seeing Elvis intentionally mess with this song in 70 and a few years later, I don't really feel that uncomfortable with it. Remember, even though they didn't do it in this concert, Elvis had a little funny show with Charlie Hodge during this song that they did on the rest of the tour. He was used to messing with this song. Was it because he was sometimes messing up the lyrics. But if so, why would he continue to do this song throughout the tour, with all the joking with Charlie? He sure had a host of other songs he could choose from. Just something to ponder.....:hmm::D

I totally agree with you! He was too sick and lost his interest in everything, altghough he didn't want to admit it, not even to himself, not completely. Very sad and painful to watch.:'(

Of all the live footage i have of Elvis i watch the CBS concerts the least. Its no fun watching Elvis struggle like he did.

What Parker was doing letting Elvis sign up for this special in the first place is beyond me.

I agree that this is a very difficult show to watch, Elvis looks so ill. At one point he comments that he can sing but couldn't talk.

For me and many fans who never got the opportunity to see Elvis live it is difficult to compare the CBS Special with the live performances that are out there on celluloid, for example you just cannot compare the CBS Special with the Aloha show because it was some four and a half years previous, granted that is not a long period of time by anybodies standards but just shows what can happen. The CBS shows show some fantastic vocal skills, I believe however that these shows would not have been Isolated incidents and other shows prior must have shown a man who truly needed to have a career break to get himself back on track.

There is a lot more film available for fans to see with the advent of Youtube and the willingness of fans to post their 8mm footage for everyone to see, for instance if Elvis would have done a concert special every year the fans would have seen a steady decline leading up to the June 1977 shows! perhaps this would have been something that Elvis would have looked at and said "Hey I really Need Help"

I think he knew his dead was closer than ever. He wanted the audience to feel fine and that's why Elvis tried to make them laugh. Also he was nervous, but he did his very well. :notworthy:

ever listen to the recordings of him with Jerry Lee, Perkins in Sun Studios? I have a recording of one his live performances in 1960 making fun of Lonsome Tonight on the same spot. To me it proved nothing about him being on drugs, that was obvious.

I just watch E on his last concert.His voice was still amazing.I don't think he was drunk.He used to joke around stage alot.And yes is very sad to see him like that.I don't think it would be a good idea to release the last concert.We love him and like everything about this man.The new generation would not understand.I remember I was still a child when the last concert was released and we all cried!But we hold him dearly in our hearts and he left us a priceless gift..his beautiful voice!his music.Thank you dear Elvis!
