Wisdom in the eye of man (the human world) is foolish for God.
A lot of people are supposedly smart because of their cynism, 'hardness' or cold emotionality, but in truth I don't think this is either professional or desirable.

I don't say anything. People like that already have their minds made up. No matter what I'd say it wouldn't change their minds. So, I don't waste my breath. I turn and walk away.

I shrug it off..their opinions, can't change them, they can't change mine. I might debate and say "Oh Well.." and smile to show i really don't care what they think.
Their so narrow minded (people of my age) they don't deserve and explination.

An opinion can always be changed. It always based on personal experience. At least with normal people. Change the experience and you'll change the opinion.
If the discussion takes place at my home I'll show them pieces of "TTWII" or I play a song like "If You Talk in Your Sleep". Mostly they will react surprised. That will open the door.

That was an intelligent reply and I totally agree with you Leroy !!!
You'll just never know how many times I have converted non believers into Elvis fans !!!
Just keep them away from the "Double Trouble" soundtrack and all will be good !!! :P

Nice replay Leroy, very true:D(y)
I don't do anything, just smile, same thing that Danielle does..
Maybe I make a mistake by not trying to change their opinion:hmm:
I should try that next time but I will make sure to keep them away from the Double Trouble soundtrack :lmfao:

Personally, I try to show respect to the music they like, which in turn leads to them giving EP a chance. Once they open the door into Elvis world, they soon realize what the fuss was and has been about, all of these years!

I don't defend myself - all they need to do is listen and they will know....I've got my daughter's little 11 yr old friend liking Elvis...am going to copy one of my cd's for her. The most grief I get is when people make fun of the way he died "on the toilet".....which by the way, my grandmother in 2000 was in an assisted living facility and that is how she died - was in bathroom - then got up and left and collapsed....believe it or not - BM (bowel movements) are very hard on your heart and if you have a weak heart.....well....you know the rest.

I don't loudly broadcast the fact that I'm an Elvis fan, tbh (well, not like I did when I was a kid), so I don't usually get a whole lot of cr@p from people. Being an Elvis fan is part of who I am, and the people who matter to me find out soon enough. I have 'defended' Elvis on occasion, when people have come up with some really uninformed stuff though - where it was obvious the record needed to be set straight.
Like one of the pps said, I respect the tastes of other people, and usually find they respect mine in turn (most of the time, anyway!!!)!

But i try to convince most people but they take the mick outta me and outta Elvis..then i get mad and i don't want to..their my friends, and i am not a nasty person. Some of my mates respect me for it and think it's good i have a hobbie but the others are rapped up in their RAP (so-called music) and i respect the fact they like that too.
Thanks Leroy great answer ! I will try.

I don't take any notice of what people say to me about Elvis, I think I must have heard it all by now. I have been a fan nearly all my life and no one will ever change me no matter what they say. If a person is only interested in todays music or whatever takes their interest then that is up to them. As far as I am concerned, they just don't know what they are missing.

I tell them that don't know what they are missing and if they don't like him keep there opions to them selves. Because there is alot of different music out there. I like alot of it but Elvis is the one that got all of our music started. Like they say "You can't judge a book by it's cover". Listen and you just might like what you hear.

I've never run across someone who put me down for being an Elvis fan. Some may smile that smile at me :) but even those who haven't particularly been an Elvis fan have all said that he had something special and that he was definitely "King".

I agree, Leroy. I have brought a few over to the world of ELVIS that way.
My own mother is especially funny. Everytime I have her listen to ELVIS now she shakes her head and says, "I don't know why I ever thought he wasn't good". :D A lot of people have ELVIS music pegged a whole lot different than the reality. I sent my elderly aunt a couple of c.d.'s as gifts. Now she thinks he is the greatest singer that EVER lived....just like her niece does. ;)

Well I just say I totally understand why they trashing Elvis, they only know the media bad side of it, but I told them whatever is on their minds its not what Im talking about, then I just burn a couple of CDs for them with my selected choices and that does the trick, instant: Man that was really good stuff! Next step, show them either the '68 DVD set, Elvis '56, or the TTWII SE. There you go, an Elvis converted, or at least someone that changes from Elvis is crap to: not my cup of the but the man was good, no doubt, and thats a lot aready don?t you think?
I try to point out how varied the music he did is. I ask if they like country, or middle of the road, or blues etc. I try to let them know he did all these things. A lot of people think "Hound Dog" or "Blue Suede Shoes" when they think Elvis (and theres nothing wrong with those) but I try to show he was much much more than that.

I don't get a lot of bad comments about being an Elvis fan. And none after he hit the charts again with ALLC i've had people ask me what other funky stuff he did. So i show them Talk in Your Sleep, Patch it Up, Polk Salad, Promised Land etc even have one friend who loves City By Night for it's jazz feel.

No matter what I try, nobody I know becomes and Elvis fan. I listen to his music in front of others, but still they don´t become fans. Some like a few songs, like "Suspicious minds" & "In the ghetto", but that´s all. In Germany people believe all the lies they hear about him & don´t believe me. Last year I had trouble with a girl who was in my class & because she always said mean things about him I got so mad I kicked her. Thinking about it now I´m proud that I defended Elvis (there really was no other way to defend him, nothing else worked), but when it happened it wasn´t funny at all. I ran away. I´m glad I can run fast, because she probably would have killed me.
It hurts me that people talk so bad about him. A few months ago there was something about him on tv. And somebody on tv said lies about him! And the girl who lied about him said it like she´d know what she´s talking about. If even people on tv lie about him, then it´s no wonder so many people believe all those lies.

I guess some people have a pre-conceived notion of the King, but I do firmly believe there is so much quality in Elvis's entire back catalogue that you'd be hard pressed to find many people who do not know or like an Elvis song.
I happily and proudly tell people I like Elvis and I genuinely don't care what people think, each to their own. This world would be so boring if people didn't have different tastes. One thing is certain though, people will still be listening to Elvis in years to come, my kids included :D

Amen aaaaaamen!
When I was in junior high-67, 68, 69 Elvis was exploding again and many people knew I had been a fan for years so they would ask me about him.
But from1962 when I became a fan until 1968-most people were not too much into him.
I never hid that I was a fan, I would admit I liked other artists also-but not nearly as much as I liked the music of Elvis.
In 69 when Elvis went live again I played some cuts from Elvis In Memphis in music class and many did not know he could sing so well or with such depth....they recalled the movie songs that was the bulk of their exposure to him.
But some people just hated him, one guy was particularly mean spirited about him, he hated his voice, hated his "plastered hair", hated his movies,
I brought in the From Memphis to Vegas double album with all the photos of Elvis and his newer longer hair and long sideburns-the guy gave the photos a glance and said "Same guy underneath"
I told him he was entitled to his opinion but since Elvis was a worldwide phenom-many people did not share his ideas.
It has to be harder for a young person today 35 years since Elvis died to combat people who just do not like him.....my heart goes out to all the young men and women who do see the talent and charisma.
Young folks hang in there, you do not let popular views keep you from respecting and liking what you like-that takes a strong individual with courage......you do not follow the pack just because everyone else does-you have character.(y)

KPM, nice story. I am one of the millions of fans (I hope millions) that was not born until after his death. I'm 34 and have loved Elvis since I was old enough to talk. It was everything for me, the looks, that voice and of course charisma. Even at that young of an age I knew this guy had it all.
It is hard to talk with people my age or younger who do not understand why I like this guy so much. I have never been made fun of for being an Elvis fan. People have always been like, oh ok. Sometimes I get oh me too. I believe I would be ready to fight if someone did make fun of him though.
Did you ever get to see him in concert? My parents did and they said it was great even though he wasn’t in the best of shape at the time. But he put on a heck of a show.
The lady that cuts my hair was around Elvis a few times. She still has a glass that he drank out of in Vegas. She said he was just as nice as everyone talks about and yes ladies better looking in person. Every time I get my hair cut we talk about Elvis half the time.

Good music is timeless and the proof is in the pudding as we're still talking about and listening to Elvis 35 years later. Music nowadays is so bland.

Yes March 22nd,1976 Kiel Auditorium St Louis Mo.
He was still very good and the show had a very diverse age group-10-70.....teenyboppers in front of us stood up and began jumping up and down when he sang Hound Dog.
I was in awe of being in the same building with him. Like your parents opinion I felt he was not in tip top shape-but the charisma was like a Supernova spilling out into the darkness-amazing.

I think the bottom line is-you can not force people to like anything....anytime you force someone to do anything...its a false thing not born of respect, but born of someone doing something they do not really agree with but do it to placate someone else.

Yes I agree its very hard to like something which most your age do not seem to get-my heart goes out to you.
When you swim against the tide-you show that you are not one to just fall in line and follow what everyone else does, thats a good thing.
Not everything is good just because a majority of people are into it, so you show that you are not going to be led by public opinion.
I want you to know you have the absolute right to like whatever you want-regardless of what the crowd thinks.(y)(y)(y)

Thank you. :D Before I found tcb-world I thought I was the only Elvis fan in the world. I´m so glad I´m not alone. I´m always an outsider because I´m the only Elvis fan in my age where I live.
Well Elvis still has more active fan clubs than any other star alive or dead, so that has to tell you something.
Lots of people like Elvis maybe not to the point we do, but they see he was a pioneer and respect that.
My kids are in your age range-and they do like some of his music, my 28 year old daughter once remarked while I was watching the 68 Special Deluxe Box set that she liked some of his songs but "as long as he was in the black leather he could just stand there...and she would enjoy it"
Anyway glad you came to TCB world.
