This is old news. It was first reported on in 74 by May Mann a reporter for the Photoplay Magazine in an article she wrote. (She was there that night)
Several direct quotes were printed with the bad words left out to be filled in by the reader. Until the bootlegged versions of this night began to surface it was not such a big deal. Now you can listen and decide for yourself how bad it sounds to you. Some hear a night of nothing but a man out of control. Others hear a man whos obviously mad at being accused of heroin use but still sang and kidded about many things.
I can tell you how this stuff gets twisted for a buck at times. On a local St. Louis Radio station a few years back they played this audio clip-but they claimed it was from a performance 2 weeks before he died and they played the worst section with nothing else from that night too compare it to. I called the station and told them that they were wrong, that it was from 3 years before he died. An intern who was answered the listener line told me-"Ya but this makes better radio" they never corrected there purposed mistake. I e-mailed a few days later and the reply was "Do you want us to play it again ?So we can explain what you claim is our mistake?" These guys are shock jocks of the worst kind. I knew it would do no good to push it.
