View Full Version : video chat?

So I just bought a webcam (this sounds like the start of thousands of emails that hopefully always go to our junk folders ) for work purposes. I work in an office but the rest of the members of my "team" are about 400 miles away. We communicate via email and via teleconference mostly. This latter method never seems to go very well, with plenty being lost by my not being in the room with them; hence this purchase.

I use Skype (Chat, not Phone), but I use it more with the people in my office than I do with the people who are a couple of states away.

[I also use AIM primarily to communicate with some outsourced programmers who are local but not in my office. If I could end up using my webcam with that application, great, but of greater importance would be to use it with Skype.]

At first I was thinking that I would have to have the Skype Phone service in order to use video, and if I'm not mistaken Skype started charging for that at the beginning of this year. But it looks like I can do Video Chat for free. Unfortunately I can't get it working for Skype. The camera works otherwise -- and it's oh so productive to just sit and watch yourself -- but for Skype it keeps failing to take a test video capture.

I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with this and also if anyone has any recommendations for other video chat applications. My co-workers have not yet bought a webcam so it could be that if I find that something else that works well then we will not use Skype for this purpose.

I have:
Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Skype 3.2

Any help anyone could provide would be appreciated.

In case anyone else experiences this, the fix for me was downloading Skype 3.5 beta.
