Hi there,
Ever wondered what Elvis did that day in Honolulu?
On the 12th they did the rehearsal show, and on the 14th the actual live broadcast.
Story goes that Elvis did a full soundcheck on the 13th. I was thinking, why didn't any recordings turn up if he did...

too bad that this milestone has been documented so poorly. It was obvious from the point of signing the contract for this show and the broadcasting, that this would become an historic event.
SO why aren't more 'the making of' pictures taken? Or backstage footage?
In the 70s these kind of live-documentaries were becoming more and more common.

Elvis didn't do the songs Early Morning Rain, Ku-ui-po, Hawaiian Wedding Song, and No More on January 13. He did those songs after the boardcast of January 14. That is why they are referred as the Post Telecast Songs. Notice, he is not wearing the belt. Also, please read the insert that comes with the Deluxe Editon of Aloha From Hawaii.
Quote:
"Post Concert "Insert" Song Session: January 14, 1973."
"Elvis and the band returned to the empty arena to tape five additional song of the expanded version of the show, as it would be seen on American television."
January 13, 1973 he was warming up for the telecast and nothing was recorded that day. He wore the suit that he wore during the 1972 NYC Press Conference.
This link goes to a photo on this site that was taken January 13, 1973. Notice he is wearing the suit that I have said he wore:

The rumor of him getting his hair cut is not a rumor but a fact. Watch both shows and you can tell that his hair was cut. His hair is longer on the rehearsal show than the telecast show.
Elvis went to see Jack Lord twice during this time he was in Hawaii. I have a interview that was recorded off of TV a few years before Jack passed away. He showed the gun and bullet that Elvis gave him. He also got the original belt of the Aloha suit. The original belt of the Aloha suit is not the one he threw in the audience. The interviewer asked Jack if that is the belt that he threw out into the audience and Jack said no it wasn't. Elvis gave the original belt to Jack before the rehearsal show. The original belt has never been seen until Jack showed it during the interview, or that is what Jack said which could be true. The belt that Elvis threw out in the audience was the second belt for the suit.

I believe some of the confusion about recording those songs some time after the rehearsal show may stem from the inclusion of outtakes of those performances on the Alternate Aloha album/CD.
The hair does look different there from both the rehearsal and the broadcast but it is clearly shorter like it is in the broadcast. It was just restyled after the show, and for whatever reason done a little differently than it was for the show. He was wearing bangs rather than just having that little flip coming out in front and it wasn't basically wasn't as overstyled all over. It looked better that way.

Well, you can't take the words of that because it only says Post Concert "Insert" Session. Yes, it could mean the Rehearsal Concert but it could also mean the Telecast when written that way.
He did no rehearsals that was video tape on January 13. He only did the warm up session which he wore the suit from the 1972 NYC Press Conference. Only photos exists of the Warm Ups.
It is the same way that the Dressing Room rehearsals of the 1968 Comeback wasn't filmed but only recorded on audio tape. But unlike the 68 Dressing Room Rehearsals, the Aloha warm up wasn't recorded on audio.
For the warm up session, Elvis tried different songs that he didn't do on either the telecast or the rehearsal shows.
Some songs that was thought that he should do for the telecast was nearly a standard cocnert of 1972 which would included the following songs:
I Got A Woman/Amen
Polk Salad Annie
Until It's time For You To Go
Bridge Over Troubled Water
and others.
From what I understand, He had at 30 songs that he was going through to see what he could do on the telecast and which ones he wasn't.
But please take the noticed, if the session was done on the 13th the question you have to ask yourself is this:
Why is he not wearing the belt?
