This morning I got a nice surprise, three of the new Warner Elvis movies - "Elvis - That's The Way It Is," "Viva Las Vegas" and "This Is Elvis" arrived. The first one to head for... that was the problem. I picked "That's The Way It Is" - obviously! I'll leave that one till last. Each of the DVD's is fitted with a lovely slip-case, remove that and get into the box it self and then you'll find inside a really nice book to go with that particular movie.
Put the movie "Viva Las Vegas" into your DVD player then after the Warner logo has finished up comes the "Jailhouse Rock" trailer followed with "Tickle Me" and lastly "Live A Little, Love A Little" which I thought was a very nice opening, after the trailers it goes into the menu. I have not seen the documentary yet, but it looks very interesting, neither have I listened to the commentary track yet. The quality of the movie is very good, it's much, much better than the original release that came out several years ago.
It's really great to have "This Is Elvis" after all these years. The menu comes on with clapping and cheering, it looks and sounds quite effective. The featurette "Behind The Gates Of Graceland" is just over nine minutes long, though I've not watched it yet, just had a quick look, it is just as the title suggests - a tour of Graceland but the picture quality is a bit disappointing. The trailer gallery is a joke, if you're expecting all the MGM trailers altogether on one disc, well forget it it's just "Elvis - That's The Way It Is" and "This Is Elvis."
Now for "Elvis - That's The Way It Is" the first disc is the upgraded version that was released a few years back. This is the only disc that is Region 1 only, all the others are Region 1-4. The 1970 version looks very nice, much better than the original DVD. Naturally, the place to head for is the extras - the outtakes. Now this is where this disc falls down, and this is only my opinion but if you are expecting the quality of the '68 TV Special outtakes then forget it, it isn't bad but Warners could have made a special effort and upgraded the quality of the films, maybe it would have been better if Warners had included the "Lost Performances" video instead, still they are nice to have and it is Elvis after all! My favourite has to be "Stranger In The Crowd" and what about the Elvis eating film!!! what can I say, well, he does sing a bit of "Mary In The Morning!"
What do I think of the releases, I'm glad I have them and every fan should have them!
