View Full Version : Having fun being Elvis.

I read this story about Elvis and thought it shows just how much fun he was still having being 'Elvis Presley" despite what a lot of so called experts might otherwise have us believe.
It was in 1976 that Elvis had been invited to attend the funeral of one of the Denver policemen that he had been friends with since the early '70's. Elvis accepted the invitation and after the funeral was asked by the other officers if he would like to come to a get together they were having in a nearby restaurant. Much to their surprise Elvis said yes and phone calls were made to the restaurant to handle their special guest.
They were given a table set back from the other guests to give them and Elvis some privacy and the officers took great pride in the fact that they were managing to keep Elvis' identity a secret, with none of the other patrons noticing him.
About half way through the evening Elvis said he needed to go to the washrooms and the officers managed to get him to and from the room with nobody recognizing him.
About 15 minutes later Elvis requested another trip to the washroom and once more the officers managed to usher him in with no one spotting him..however on the way back to the table, Elvis spotted to women standing in the hallway and just as it looked like he was in the clear again he stopped right beside them. He adjusted his clothing and looked right at the ladies. One turned to the other and said"Is that who I think it is?" and Elvis said "Who do you think I am?" and grinned that famous smile, before turning away, leaving the ladies in hysterics and needless to say a few minutes later Elvis and the officers had to be escorted out of the restaurant.
And if that isnt an example of Elvis having fun being 'Elvis" even as late as '76 when he was supposedly tired of being who he was then I dont know what is.That story to me shows Elvis was still happy being who he was and that he never seemed to loose that thrill of being able to shock people in such a manner.

...Elvis said "Who do you think I am?" and grinned that famous smile, before turning away.

I'm picturing it in my mind :D

It sure says something about the man, oposite to the image created by the public(y)

Thanks for the story Pacer

Thank God for the internet to clear up a lot of these false myths that have been going around for years about Elvis. One is that he lived a Howard Hughes existence, which is absolutely untrue. Thanks for the beautiful story pacer 1966!

I know that i read that Elvis always used to love surprising people by either buying them something or just turning up out of the blue.

seen a photo of Elvis riding one of his moterbikes on his own and the date of this photo.....August 14th 1977.He had just been to place flowers on his mothers grave.I'm sorry i didn't want ton turn this thread into something sad.But it proves Elvis did get out.

Thanks for the great story, Pacer. I loved reading it. (y)

It reminds me a bit of the story Linda Thompson tells about when her and ELVIS went to the Memphian Theater one night at midnight. (Most of you probably know the story by now, but it is funny enough to repeat here.)
ELVIS was walking a little ahead of Linda. Some people came up to ELVIS and said, "Look its ELVIS! Your ELVIS aren't you?" ELVIS replied, "Well, yes, I am ELVIS", and they got all excited of course. :D
Then Linda walked up to ELVIS and said, "Charlie, you are not using that ELVIS bit again are you!" Linda told the fans, "He gets that all the time. He is always messin' with people." Then the people said, "We knew you couldn't be ELVIS." ELVIS said, "But I am, tell 'em honey." :lmfao: Linda replied, "Come on, Charlie, we're late.":lol::lol:

Yep....Pretty cool to be ELVIS. (y)

I read that too Sweet Caroline..it was a funny story, and after Linda kept calling him "charlie",he wanted to let the ladies to know he was Elvis, but its wierd they didnt believe him.If he was still around today(at 72) nobody would recognize him.

Thanks for sharing that story Steve, I hadn't heard that one. It's great to see that Elvis still had that wonderful sense of humor to the end.

Carole, I read that one before with Linda turning the joke on Elvis, she was really good for him. Thanks for posting so others could read.

Hello Pacer, a pretty amusing story that relates the inherent sense of humor of Elvis and his being so candid. Thanks for posting

I read this story about Elvis .....

It reminds me a bit of the story Linda Thompson tells about when her and ELVIS went to the Memphian Theater one night .......

Sure sounds like something Elvis would do and then Linda; but I've never heard these two stories, so can you please provide sources for this, so I can read it for myself, just to verify - if I would happen to have the book/books these stories are in (y)

:lol:....Steve and Carole thank you both for sharing these lovely stories with us.....have never heard these two before....they sure made me smile :) but am feeling sorry for those fans that were so close to Elvis but then thought they only met Charlie ...altho it's quite surprising that they didn't recognize him, cos Charlie was a lot shorter than Elvis :P....and if you got some more stories like these two please post them....would love to hear them =)....thanks again for making my day:lol:

Yes, thanks to you guys.
I'd heard the one about Elvis and Linda ,but not the one with the officers.
Sounds like something he'd do. ;)

Great stories, thanks for sharing them! :D
I remember reading something about a plane...Elvis wanted to stop a plane, so he rushed to an airport but stopped the wrong plane, or something like that  Anybody knows how much truth is in this?

Wonderful stories indeed but I'm sure that Elvis didn't always enjoy being Elvis. He wanted to have some privacy in some occassions and he just couldn't because he was who he was. But when he was in a good mood I'm sure he had a lot of fun just being Elvis. Especially when he was with Linda...;)

I remember reading something about a plane...Elvis wanted to stop a plane, so he rushed to an airport but stopped the wrong plane, or something like that  Anybody knows how much truth is in this?

Now that one is true. James Caughley jr. (or "Hamburger James" as he was called) had stolen two or three polaroid pictures of Priscilla and another girl in some compromising situations and sure enough James had gone to an airport, and had at least one of those pictures with him. Elvis found out in time and he and the guys left for the airport in a hurry, and Elvis went onto the tarmac, flashed his badge that Nixon had given him, the steps were pushed back up to it, Elvis stormed the cockpit and told them they had to surrender the suspect to him - and Elvis dragged Hamburger James out of that plane by the back of his neck.

He was dragged towards the car, and Elvis read him his right - but unfortunately couldn't remember all of the words, of the so-called "Miranda", so he just said "And you have the right to all the rest of that shit. Get the **** in the car."

They went back to the hotel they were staying at, and James was literally slapped around, and a couple of the guys had their guns drawn. First James said that his father, who was a cop, would hunt Elvis down and kill him, then he pleaded for mercy.

Elvis told him to go back to Memphis and said that he wouldn't be bothered anymore, as long as Hamburger James would keep his mouth shut. Elvis felt bad about it later.

Marty Lacker doesn't know what happened to him after that, except that he heard that he was pumping gas for a while.
