View Full Version : Previously released versions not available on CD
I have been wondering for a while now of why RCA has never released the songs and alternate versions and live performances that were once released officially by RCA on vinyl. Here's some for an example.
Steamroller Blues (January 12, 1973-Greatest Hits Vol.1
A Big Hunk O' Love (February 15, 1972)
Let Yourself Go (Edit) Legendary Performance Vol.3
It Hurts Me (Edit)-1968
If I Can Dream-He Walks Beside Me
The Impossible Dream (February 16, 1972)
Actually I know that The Impossible Dream is the same version on Burning Love as on He Walks Beside Me. But the LP version does not have the audience overdubbed at the beginning and the music comes straight on as if it were studio recorded. Then the crowd comes in.

I can tell you that both Greatest Hits Vol 1 and He Walks Beside Me were released on CD here in Australia years ago.
Rare as hens' teeth though. They are seen in this pic of some of my CDs.

Always loved He Walks Beside Me ... wish i could get that on cd again ...
The Greatest Hits Volume 1 was one fo my favorite LP's. I lost it in a fire. I loved the edited version of What'd I Say and the Aloha dress rehearsal of Steamroller Blues. The mixes were some of the best ever. All the songs were great. Now why can't RCA put out an album like that today? They could take all the old LP released versions and place them into a new CD for the mainstream even if just as a low budget release.

Yeah, but the title was very misleading. Only half of the LP was even remotely considered a "hit", and most of the versions were presented in a previously-unreleased form.
But it's one of the best releases ever, IMO - same with the UK version called The Sound of Your Cry, with a couple of different tracks.
I think the concept was meant to be more of an alternate hits album with live versions of hit singles from the past, such as A Big Hunk O'Love, Don't Cry Daddy, Steamroller Blues, and What'd I Say . The Sound Of Your Cry was a hit in the UK.

I don't know why. I've tried to listen to it many times over the years, but I just loathe it. Boring, turgid stuff. My least favourite Elvis track of all time, nothing even comes close!
He Walks Beside Me was also released on cd in Canada in 98.
