Because he was uber-cool! (y)
You wear a cape, you just gotta have a cane!

He didn't use it really, it was just to complete his outfit. Besides that, it also contained a concealed weapon.

I don't know why he used it,
but it's for sure that he looked cool with it:D :D :D

That is totally correct. I guess fans didn't know he had a weapon in his cane.:P

now i'm testing my memory but was the weapon a small gun inclosed in the handle? I know i've read what it was quite a few years back.

The Cane, was used as a statement "STYLE" and was just part of his wardrobe for the time!!

Elvis had several canes and some did indeed had a small caliber gun in it. You might remember a scene in "On Tour" where he's in the elevator heading to a rehearsal. He's surrounded by friends and pulled out the top of the cane and if you look closely it showed a sword.

nice to know Leroy
I think Elvis looked cool with the cane
I think a lot of the concealed weapon stuff started from all the death threats
, but lets face it-it had a James Bond secret agent feel to it. Elvis loved that kind of thing. But he did look cool with it.:D

There's a picture of a cane & the weapon - a dagger, I believe - in the book Elvis by the Presleys. (not a book I would pay money for, btw, it was a thoughtful gift)

I think Elvis looked very cool with a cane, actually.....he was the epitome of "cool"...no doubt about it!!
(I'll have to check out that scene in EOT with the cane--I hadn't even noticed the sword in the cane!)
(I just now checked out that particular scene....very cool!!)
This is off the subject, but did anyone ever notice that the lady with the black curly hair and binoculars who turns her face towards the camera (during the "crowd shots" in this scene) looks eerily like Gladys Presley?? I know it's not her...but it still freaked me out when I saw it for the very first time....

I am genuinely surprised by the love for the canes around here. I dared to mention in a thread awhile back that I wasn't crazy about the canes, and I couldn't believe the nerve that I struck! :D
Still, I stand behind my opinion that the cigars and canes gave Elvis an older, unhip appearance for the times.

How dare you pick on his use of canes, or smoking cigars! On a more serious note, remember the times, the early seventies were the superfly days as men EP's age were dressing to the nines! He certainly looked better then some hippie with long scraggily hair, and no shoes or socks on.

I don't think a cane would have done the job, perhaps a lock!

I think he began using it after he recorded:

Thats probably when he decided to wear the high collars also.;):)
