I've been listening to a the various takes of his "69, From Elvis In Memphis Sessions". I have listened to them many times, but I'm just still blown away from this part of his recording career.

Just listened to a couple of takes of "This is the story", what a great song.

But so is the rest of the songs.

N0.1 on my listening at the moment.

Without a doubt the '69 recordings are the finest and best sessions that Elvis ever did. The recorded tracks are real jewels and strong songs. But the weird thing is, I listen to these tracks very rarely. Same goes with the '69 shows and the '68 Special. Elvis never was better vocally than in that period, but still it's not a favourite era. I love the positive, upbeat feelings though...

My alltime favourite tracks from '69 is "Any Day Now" :D

I love these recordings! I'm really digging "From A Jack To a King" lately. He just rips it up vocally on that song 8)

Albert, like you I am not one to listen to '68 special material very often. There is no denying the talent, the power, the historical significance, etc., but it's not a favorite thing for me to listen to either. If I were to do so, I would probably mostly focus on the sit-down shows.

This Is The Story and Inherit The Wind are two great underrated '69 songs. At or near the top of my list of songs from those sessions is Gentle On My Mind. I really love that song.

INHERIT THE WIND, THIS IS THE STORY, and GENTLE ON MY MIND are indeed 3 of the best tracks from the '69 American Sound Sessions.

I also have to give kudos to these other songs from those sessions which I think are GREAT and truly underrated:

Yes, Long Black Limousine is the tops!

I don't really listen to 68 comeback stuff much either....I'm not that keen on the overblown productions - just listen to that flute, recorder, whistle thing on Don't Be Cruel!

However, the sit-down shows are something else. I'll dig those out once in a while but to me they are like a really special old book that you only take out now and then.

I'm always listening to the Memphis Sessions though...the power and the passion is amazing!

The memphis sessions are probably my favourite out of all elvis' recordings. Each song has its own strengths, but each is fantastic.
Elvis is in the form of his life - his voice has everything.
I love the boots available too.
American Crown Jewels and Finding The Way Home are two must buys if you can get your hands on them :)

Like all of you guys and girls I'm crazy about the Memphis material.

A couple of years ago I suddenly re-discovered I'm Movin' On. An underrated 1969 song i.m.o.
Agreed, I don't really care much for the official version, with those horns and stuff, but... just listen to the fabulous version on The Memphis 1969 Anthology.
That guitar sound really awesome!

To me it sounds a lot stronger than the version released on Memphis Sessions, the so called undubbed master.

On the other hand, sometimes upon hearing such a version like on Anthology I somehow get the feeling it's tampered with, you know what I mean? Like it's not really the way it was recorded. In this case they may have created a mix in which the guitar is up front...

Over the years other unreleased versions gave me the same feeling.

You're right about those alternate versions: because they are so pure and in-perfect, they sound more sincere and honoust than the (overdubbed) masters. I just love those "unplugged" alternate versions.

But on the other site: I also love the "1980 Guitar Man" remix version of "Movin' On". That album had some great remix versions (like "You Asked Me To", "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard" and "Guitar Man/What I'd Say").

I've come to really like that Guitar Man album. Having originally just heard that song on the Great Country Songs CD, I then heard all the remixes on the TMMB FTD, which I wasn't wild about at first. As I gave it some more listens, I came to realize that I really did like some of them, and the ones I liked the best were essentially all the tunes that made the original album. I just got the LP about a week ago. It's a great looking and great sounding album, and it's pretty neat that the advertisement for This Is Elvis came inside it. Sorry to digress.

BTW I would also have to mention Lovin' Arms, Just Call Me Lonesome...nevermind. I was just going to name all the rest, which is rather pointless. :lol:

I love the 68 and 69 recordings, did you know that during the Memphis recordings Elvis had a pretty bad case of the flu and an awful throat infection. Still I think they are some of his best.

This Is The Story= Words can't describe !! One of the best songs ever. I have to say I love these 69 sessions they are the best and I love the American Way volumes they are the best!

Back to this is the story, the live version is one of the best!!!(y)
