View Full Version : Idea for FTD

I think it would make a great FTD project to release the Indianapolis '77 show with bonus songs from Cincinati, in a package that would also include a relatively slim, softcover book with photos from the concert. This should be at a lesser price than the other FTD book/cd sets due to the material being from an audience recording, and the book being slim/softcover. And the photos should be carefully selected - in other words no shots where Elvis looks like Jackie Gleason on a bender.

Interesting idea Pete(y)
The only thing is that I don't believe they (FTD) have any soundboard recordings from either of these shows in their possession?
Nevertheless, they might could do it using remastered audience recordings from the original tapes (which do sound pretty good considering they are taped from the audience), but I don't think the general public would accept these types of recordings?
At least there are lots of nice photos from both of these shows floating around, so at least that base would be covered.:D

But BBM FTD isn't aimed at the general public, just us hardcore fans. I did have the audience recordings in mind. In the case of Indy Ernst has talked about getting a high quality audience recording if I'm not mistaken. Bring it on Ernst!

I know I'm probably going to get "shot" for saying this, but I (personally) wouldn't mind if FTD used good quality audience recordings for some of their releases, provided there was no SB available for a particular show, and provided they could clean up and enhance the sound.

I think it will be great if FTD would release Indianapolis...it's a great show and you right, there are some nice pictures.
I really dont care to see FTD cover the same ground as the import labels unless the sound was much improved. The Pittsburgh show is a prime example. If anything the boot sounds better. Both Indy and Cincy have been released on boots for many years. Most people that buy FTD's probably already have these recordings.

There is a soundboard of the Indianapolis show from June 26, 1977. I have read in books about the sound engineer saying that he remember recording the shows of Macon and Mobile and All or nearly all of the shows from his last tour. But he knew one thing that his last four shows was recorded.

I believe the tape of the Indy show was rumored to be in the hands of a private collector who has no wish to release it.

The sounboard (NOT multitrack) is in the hands of a member of the 'touring party' who was at the show in question.

FTD company can get it back if they would like to release it. The person is subjected to turn the tape over to them upon asking. EPE can step in ask for the tape and if the person won't get it. EPE can sue for the tape since it was illegal obtain in the first place. EPE never sold any tapes without making a copy of it first. That is what happen in a case of one of Frank Sinatra's concert was suppose to be his very first show. A person had it and wouldn't give it over to the family. The family sued and won.

I don't think this is the case. The person who has the tape, recorded it on the night. It was his tape and he had permission to record the show, though not for public release.

I doubt EPE know the identity of the person who holds the recording - that's if it even exists - and how can EPE sue for a recording of the concert, when RCA were handling all of that?
EPE don't have the soundboards and they can't sue RCA to release them from their vaults.
Legally EPE don't have any ground to sue anyone for anything like that.

I also know about this person and that the recording might exist.
Then again, FTD also released New Years Eve right, being an audience recording.
And Indy 1977 is important enough to be released. Audience recording or soundboard!

He sure did look good for the Indy concert. He looked much slimmer in the footage of him walking down the ramp in Indianapolis and meeting Todd Slaughter in his track suit, then he did earlier in that month. Nice idea Pete!

I wonder if that member has other shows as well. Someone wrote about Ron Tutt listening to a tape of feb 12 show at the pool of a hotel the party was staying at...I would give anything...

The audience recording is so darn good--especially on the VCD and presumably the DVD--that I really can't imagine the soundboard providing a listening experience that far superior. Well, certainly we would gain some clarity but I would really miss that awesome audience response.
In fact I've wondered aloud before that if the soundboard was obtained if they wouldn't consider enhancing it by mixing the audience recording into it. That would be a cool project, but I'm not sure if FTD would delve into something like that or not, for several reasons. Someone ought to try it though if the soundboard ever does surface. The completeness of the recordings could be an issue, I realize.
Not that I don't want to see that happen, but I wonder if hearing the soundboard might cause some to be less impressed with the performance. Not to say it would reveal any glaring deficiencies in Elvis' voice or anything like that, but with a less clear recording and one that has a great audience response heard on it, I think it's natural for people to come away with a better impression and be less likely to pick up on imperfections (or focus on them).
Regardless of all that, I think an FTD of Indy + Cincy tracks would make an awesome release. It's almost a no-brainer as I think all fans, regardless of what they are into the most, should want to have Elvis' last show on record. And yes, this year would be perfect timing.
Once again I'd like to plug my suggestion for a title for such a project. It's my signature.

So the SB of Elvis' last show definately exists ... ??
If so, then there's some hope we might actually get to hear it one day.
If the day does come, I hope I'm still around
It's one of the most important recordings, EVER.
