at times browsing through pics, books , i think to my self what the heck made E.P. wear some of those outfits [to flamboyant] for a macho guy[image], do you ever think he was a bit to flamboyant ? [i'm sure i'll get alot of flack for this].

I, just before I found here, was doing a hunt for Elvis stuff online and found the national archive files on Elvis and Nixon. I laughed my head of when I looked at those pictures - "going to met the President of the United States, what'll I wear?" I'd love to have been there for that wardrobe decision. The pictures of him showing Nixon his cufflinks - a few feet from the nuclear button "Hey Prez, you like these?" - hilarious!
I think in all those things he wore, in how he dressed as a kid, in how he sang he was like from another planet. People tell me what it was like to be a kid in the 50's and first hear Elvis on the radio, it was other worldly.
Elvis was flamboyant, but like so much about him that word doesn't suffice, he is beyond those simple descriptions - he was flamboyant "plus tax." I wouldn't get away with it or carry it off, don't think many if any could - he did and was always 110% man no matter how many rhinestones it took!

I think he looked extremely cool when he went to see Nixon! His off-stage wardrobe in the 70's was great... The jumpsuits were alright for a while, but he really should have stopped wearing them by 74-75... It was time for something new then, think about how much and how fast he had changed styles prior to that, in the years 67-72 there was a new look every year (well, almost). But too flamboyant? Heck, no, that was part of being who he was.

He was always flamboyant, even before he was famous. Some fashions tend to age better than others though. It's virtually impossible to find a 50s pic where he doesn't look great. A little easier to find 70s pics where I think "what were you thinking??" :D But you can say that of a lot of people's fashion choices in the 70s, on or off stage. Seen footage of Lionel Richie back then?

I think the story goes that he stromed out of the house after an argurement with Vernon, and went off to the airport and ended up on a plane to see Nixon in the clothes he was wearing when he left.

I don't think he thought I'm going to meet the president what'll i wear. Personaly i like the outfit he had on when he met Nixon.

No i don't think he was to flamboyant he liked colour and wasn't afraid to wear it. It was just him, when you read early accounts of Elvis just starting out this career he wore pink shirts, lace shirt, waht would be called loud clothes, he liked bling before that term was invented.

As I remember it everyone copied the jumpsuits in the early 70s. (even a few country artists like Marty Robbins, Billy Crash Craddock and I even saw Conway Twittys son wearing one when he played a local fair here in 73)
As far as the question was he too flamboyant, yep and he was proud of it. Look at the 50s, pink shirts with black pegged pants-part of the heart of Elvis was his fashion style. He felt comfortable in wearing what he liked, it gave a lot of guys and gals the courage to say,
" Hey maybe I'll wear what I like when I can because its okay. Its fun!"
Liberace really did not dress so wild in the 50s, he wore the tux and tails. In the late 60s and early 70s is when Liberace really went wild with his act and the way he dressed. Liberace did not look cool though he looked weird in the crazy hotpants suits and feathered outfits!

Flamboyant? Of course! He dressed to be remembered. And the public expected it. He didn't dress like that in his personal moments. Look at the photos of him at the beachfront with Priscilla, in the travel bus, on horseback or just hanging out with family. Always elegant, but not "over the top". But in the public eye, one always knew ELVIS was in the HOUSE!

I think he wore those flamboyant clothes to shock people and he always had a very own taste even in the early years! But let's face it: everything he wore looked just great on him. I think he had class and style. Also I think he was his time way ahead. Look at the clothing nowadays, almost everything is possibleto wear. From excentric, sexy cloths to jeans with holes in it. Maybe he opened the doors for wearing clothes where you just feel good in even if it's not typical.
