James Brown wasn't that popular in the UK.
How can he be bigger than Elvis?
Don't know if James Brown had any No 1's.
Elvis is the best.
92% after 2,317 responses.

James Brown had at least 17 # 1 hits on the R & B charts. He wasn't the cross over artist that Elvis was but he was great in his own right, and probably more popular the Elvis with certain groups . A lot of people in the early days as Maurice has pointed out in several posts think Elvis "stole" guys like James Browns, and Little Richard etc styles. I don't agree but it was and is out there.

Of his R & B success I see that Many James Brown fan sites proudly display the following
James Brown is #2 of all time with hit records behind Elvis Presley. He is number 1 in R&B hits with
over 116 charted hits during his career :
James Brown has 96 top 100 hits
James Brown has 116 R&B hits

James Brown was on the record as being a Big Elvis fan. I don't recall a comment from Elvis on James Brown but I'm sure he was aware of him being that he was a big supporter in the early days of "race music" as they called it then.

I am not into soul music by James Brown. If Elvis stole others style of singing. Surely some stole Elvis's style.:hmm:

No doubt about that Suspicious Minds. Tom Jones immediately comes to mind, even worked a lot of the same crowds in the 70s. Heck Elvis sparked a whole industry of folks that copy him.

it's 92% for Elvis, of course...and 8% for James Brown...after 2618 responses...

I always wonder why people that write these articles and Q&A things are compelled to try and make people feel like they have to chose one. Its
no contest to me, I prefer Elvis. However I liked somethings James Brown did musically as well. I always feel like they're trying to make me chose , not like one of them when they do this. Maybe that isn't the intent but thats how it always makes me feel. They always say Elvis was the last guy in the world that thought Music started and ended with him, he was influenced by others, and influenced others himself. He had quite the record collection of his own. I don't think he'd like people feeling they have to limit their music experience.

James Brown is not famous as Elvis and never will be. Brown doesn't have the following like Elvis.:king:

Suspicious Minds, As far as entertainers go only the beatles really ever did. The only bigger crowd of mourners I've ever seen then Elvis was when Princess Diana died . JB was pretty big though at one time, and pretty Iconic people that didn't know his music still knew who he was by site. With Elvis though His fame was really overwhelming to him.

I don't think it's a popularity contest, the pollster asked who had a bigger impact on music. The answer is Elvis, as even a little bit of research will tell you. His impact was not confined to just music, but culture as well, and for that reason alone his impact will always be larger.

I hate, though, how both sides weren't presented equally. I mean, it's fine to pick a side as this guy picked Brown, and he supported that pick....but he didn't give any reasons why people might pick Elvis, and that's wrong. Trying to steer opinion can backfire, and I'm glad to see it has in this case because the guy was wrong. Good to know that people are seeing through it.

I love James Brown, btw. Nothing against him, he was/is great. His impact just doesn't compare to Elvis', but very, very few can.

This poll is now featured on a Memphis TV website and although Elvis is well in the lead he needs more comments from fans as at present the comments favour James over Elvis.

Likewise Maurice. By the time Bob Sillerman is finished I am sure we will be in a much stronger position to get Memphis Airport renamed Elvis Presley Airport.

Yes Brian, we may see some interesting changes in Memphis in the near future. ;-)

Meantime great publicity for Elvis and his music is being generated by these polls. Did you see the editor of Memphis Flyer piece on the Poll? LOL.

He would like his mag to get that sort of attention! :)
