i love to listen to THAT'S THE WAY IT IS[ORIGINAL ] cd from start to finish, and unlike other albums/cd's i don't skip certain tracks like i do on other releases. i know that many consider this to be the most overproduced album that E.P. ever done, but i find the concept[live and studio tracks] to have bin a really great idea, probably one of the first albums to have incorerated the two[correct me if i'm wrong], sure durring the years we had others most notably MOODY BLUE, again another album that i enjoy, but not a cd that i can listen to start to finnish without skipping through the tracks. My really faves on TTWII album would be 20 days and 20 nights[his voice and the back vocals musicianship on this track is pure entertainment, also love the live rendition of I'VE lost you, much enjoyable for me than the studio version or any other version i have heard[even though felton admitted that he overdubbed quite a bit on this track and album for that matter] and of course stranger in the crowd[what a great song], i just wish that over the years he had added alot of differn't tracks to his shows, it would have bin great to hear all kinds of tracks live, like SOLITAIRE, MOODY BLUE[complete and rehersed],three corn patches , i miss you, return to sender, and many others, he sure had alot of great ones to choose from, So what cd is your favorite and why? And what songs would you have liked to have heard live[some really obsquire ones ]

I know it is something of a hodgepodge, and was not commercially a strong follow-up to the Aloha album, but I love from beginning to end the listening experience of...

My first reaction to this thread was to say That's the Way It Is, but honestly I have suffered burnout by a couple of the cover tunes like "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling".
After much more thought, my honest answer would be Promised Land. It is not my favorite EP album, but it is one that I can listen to every track and not have the urge to skip anything. That includes "Mr Songman". :)
From the 60's the much underrated Something For Everybody gets my vote.

Jerry (and memphis), I thought I was one of the few who relished Pot Luck as a secret, guilty pleasure. OK, it's not that out there.
But for whatever reason in the last six months maybe I've given that a lot more play than probably anything else from the sixties. I really like it, and I really like my LP. It's a 1977 reissue and its sound is about as good as any record I have.
Love that Nashville Sound. On this subject, about a month ago I acquired a sealed copy of the Elvis In Nashville album, and I haven't opened it yet. I have some albums that I bought sealed and will probably never open, but I'll likely tear into this one soon for a couple of reasons. First, it's not some really old LP (1988) that needs to be preserved like that and secondly, the tracklisting is killer.
I Got A Woman
A Big Hunk O' Love
Working On The Building
Judy
Anything That's Part Of You
Night Rider
Where No One Stands Alone
Guitar Man
Little Cabin Home On The Hill
It's Your Baby, You Rock It
Early Mornin' Rain
It's Still Here
I, John
Studio B is a tour you should take if you ever get the chance.
Sorry to digress.
My Favorite to this day is still my first and that was "Promised Land". I like it from start to finish.

Funny you should mention that. I was just thinking about that album the other day. I used to have the purple vinyl version of that as a kid. Honestly, I probably didn't appreciate all those ballads like I should have at the time, but looking back, that was a really good selection of tracks.

You know the collector in me is going to tell you NOT to open that ELVIS IN NASHVILLE LP buddy....it's been out of print for YEARS and is worth a few bucks, even though it is only 19 years old! ;)

I know I've mentioned this before in many other threads, but the one album that I personally enjoy from beginning to end is the TODAY album!!
It is just such a great mix of different genres of music....from good ol' fashioned rock n' roll (T-R-O-U-B-L-E) to blues (SHAKE A HAND) to great covers (GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME, I CAN HELP) to country (SUSAN WHEN SHE TRIED) to ballads (AND I LOVE YOU SO) to great original songs (BRINGIN' IT BACK, PIECES OF MY LIFE, WOMAN WITHOUT LOVE)....this album has it all for me!!! boogie, great call on He Touched Me.
Like nashville's hesitation on naming Today because of Shake A Hand (and I'm with you on that), Good Times is right up there among my favorites. But She Wears My Ring and to some degree If That Isn't Love keep it from being my #1 or #2.
Mike...well, there is a collector in me too, as you know, but on the subject of the Nashville LP he is currently losing the arm wrestling match to the fan/audiophile in me who likes using these vinyl goodies the way nature intended. :)
(Not that many other recent acquisitions to speak of, I don't think, though we haven't had that conversation in a while, so I dunno.)

Well pal....that is why eBay was created...just for people like you to run out and buy a second copy of the Nashville LP, so that you can have one to listen to and enjoy, while keeping another one sealed for your retirement savings!! ;)

I agree with you NASHVILLE CAT that "Shake A Hand" can be a bit repetitive....but for me, it's just another way for me to show newer Elvis fans that the rumors of his artistic demise in the mid to late 70's is GREATLY exaggerated....he could still sink his teeth into a great blues song like "Shake A Hand" even in 1975!!! GOOD TIMES is a fine album, but SHE WEARS MY RING and IF THAT ISN'T LOVE are 2 of my lesser favorites, hence the reason I couldn't name that album as my favorite from beginning to end!!
I know earlier in this thread, you mentioned the ELVIS (FOOL) album....I'm pretty much in the same boat on that one as I am on GOOD TIMES....definitely a fine album in my opinion, despite the so-called hodge podge of material on it...but I WILL BE TRUE and I'LL TAKE YOU HOME AGAIN KATHLEEN, while fine songs for sure, just aren't personal favorites of mine! :'(

Well we certainly differ on that. It's Still Here along with the above two tracks you just mentioned rank very high on my list, for their individual merits as well as thinking of them in terms of a session within a session.
Just imagine that scene at Studio B. First of all you've got Elvis being the last guy to call it quits, with essentially all of the band having gone home. Wait a second, what decade are we in--the 50s? 60s? No, it's May 19, 1971.
So the man is left to his own devices and without others there to influence his song selection, he chose songs that meant a lot to him, in spite of their not having serious hit potential. Was Felton going to tell him to sing something else? Of course not. Not simply because Elvis was Elvis but because here was the artist singing songs that he really felt, which I believe really came through in those performances. Was Felton going to do something about the fact that his playing the piano and singing at the same time did not make for an ideal recording technically speaking? No, for the same reason.
I can see that studio dimly lit that morning with Elvis sitting at his favorite piano, A Steinway & Sons that the studio would not sell to him at any price, belting those songs out. And although the atmosphere was different, there was probably a similar vibe in the air as when 11 years prior in that same room he recorded Are You Lonesome Tonight, with only a solitary candle burning.
Again, all this addresses more about the session than the songs themselves, but they were a result of the above. Even if I were not to picture all that when I hear those songs, I would still think they are very fine performances.
But to each his own, Mike. ;)

That was such a beautiful description! That makes me see those songs in a completely new light. When Elvis was left to follow his own instincts and creativity there was always magic. Those songs are so intimate and heartfelt. I must confess I am not crazy about "Kathleen" as a song, but there's no doubt Elvis gives it a very tender reading. I also think it would have been better released without the overblown string arrangement.

Hey, thanks nashville! Agreed: the undubbed versions of these songs make for the best listen.
IMO Kathleen is a simple and beautiful old Irish song that is given a very nice treatment by Elvis--tender, as you put it.
